The ESP32-2432S028R Cheap Yellow Display (CYD) is a practical choice when your next ESP32 project needs a compact touchscreen, but you would rather not wire a separate display and touch controller. Its integrated ESP32, color screen, resistive touch, USB programming and power, and storage interface suit small control panels, status displays, and learning projects. It is less suitable when you need many free GPIO pins, a larger screen, or certainty that every board sold under the CYD nickname has the same hardware.
What is a Cheap Yellow Display?
CYD commonly refers to the 2.8-inch ESP32-2432S028R board. Guition’s specification describes an ESP32-WROOM-32 with a dual-core processor, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, 520 KB SRAM, 448 KB ROM, and 4 MB flash, alongside a color TFT and resistive touch panel. It also lists backlight control, speaker drive, a light-sensitive circuit, an RGB LED, a TF-card interface, a serial interface, and reserved I/O. See the Guition vendor specification.

The vendor lists the display resolution as 320 × 240 pixels (240 × 320 in portrait orientation), the operating voltage as 5 V, the approximate power consumption as 115 mA, the module weight as about 50 g, and its size as 50.0 × 86.0 mm. These are vendor-listed values; the specification does not show a publication date, and the current figure is approximate rather than an independent measurement.

Why choose it for a project?
Start with fewer separate parts
The controller, display, and touch panel are integrated, and the board includes USB programming and power. The author of the CYD community project describes it as helpful for beginners because “everything is already connected, there is no soldering or additional components required.” Treat that as the maintainer’s description of the board’s appeal, not as a guarantee that every project will need no extra parts.
Make a project visible and interactive
A built-in color screen and touch input lend themselves to compact menus, device controls, and status displays. The TF-card interface can support projects that need removable storage. The board also includes speaker drive, a light-sensitive circuit, and an RGB LED, giving projects additional built-in hardware to explore.

Choose from several documented software paths
Guition lists Arduino IDE, ESP IDE, MicroPython, and Mixly support. The community project includes setup guidance, examples for display libraries, ESPHome examples, pin information, and troubleshooting. That documentation can help you get from an initial demo to custom firmware, but it does not mean every sketch or library will work without configuration. Match instructions to your board and software versions.

What are the trade-offs?
Fewer pins are genuinely free
The display, touch controller, SD interface, LED, light sensor, and speaker circuitry use or share board pins. A board-specific reference identifies only a few easily accessible GPIOs, warns that GPIO21 controls the backlight, and notes that GPIO22 is shared between two connectors. Before adding peripherals, check the pin map for your exact board and count the pins that remain available for your design.

The display and touch experience are fixed
The common model has a 2.8-inch display and resistive touch. If a project needs a larger screen, another touch technology, or a particular display controller, confirm those requirements before choosing the board. The integrated design saves separate wiring but limits your choice of screen and touch hardware.
How do you get started with a CYD?
- Identify the hardware. Check the board marking, connector and revision, touch type, and display controller on the product listing and the delivered board. The ESP32-2432S028R specification describes an ILI9341 display; other CYD-style boards or later units may differ.
- Choose matching setup instructions. Use the community project’s setup and example material as a starting point, and confirm that its model, display library, and configuration match your board and software version.
- Try a basic display and touch example. Confirm that the screen renders correctly and that touch input registers before building the rest of the project. If either fails, check the controller and pin configuration against the actual board rather than assuming a tutorial applies to every CYD.
- Plan add-ons around the pin map. Check which GPIOs are occupied or shared before connecting sensors or other peripherals. Add a TF card or speaker only if the project uses removable storage or the onboard speaker drive, and verify connector and hardware fit.
Which ESP32-2432S028R should you buy?
Search for the exact model, ESP32-2432S028R, rather than selecting a listing solely because it says “CYD.” Confirm the screen controller and touch type in the listing, and check that the delivered board matches the documentation you intend to follow. The board catalog and community project provide board references and purchase paths, but seller prices, stock, and listing accuracy can change; no single current price or listing is established here.

Before choosing this integrated board over an ESP32 development board and a separate display, compare the total parts cost for your particular build, wiring effort, screen size and resolution, touch technology, genuinely free GPIO count, memory and storage needs, example availability, and confidence in the hardware revision. The available references describe the CYD’s components and pin constraints, but do not establish a controlled head-to-head result or a universal price advantage.

When is the CYD the right next board?
- Choose it when a compact ESP32 project needs an integrated display and resistive touch, and the accessible I/O is sufficient.
- Check it carefully when following a tutorial, buying a listing that uses only the CYD nickname, or attaching peripherals. Confirm the revision, display controller, touch type, and pin assignments.
- Compare other configurations when your project depends on many spare GPIOs, a different touch experience, a larger display, more memory, or a specific display controller. The references do not establish a universal winner, so decide against your project’s requirements.
