What does the blue circle mean on Facebook Messenger? It depends on the circle’s shape and whether it contains a check. An open circle usually indicates a message is sending; a circle with a check indicates it was sent; and a filled circle with a check indicates delivery. The recipient’s small profile picture beside the message is the commonly documented sign that it has been seen. Delivered does not mean read.
How to read Messenger’s message-status icons
Look at the symbol next to the message you sent—not just its color. The icons mark different stages in the message’s progress.

| What appears beside your message | Commonly documented meaning |
|---|---|
| Open circle, no check | Sending: Messenger is still attempting to send the message. |
| Open circle with a check | Sent: the message has advanced beyond the sending stage, but is not yet shown as delivered. |
| Filled circle with a check | Delivered: the message has reached a delivery stage. This does not confirm that the recipient opened or read it. |
| Recipient’s small profile image | Seen: older guides describe this image beside the message as the read indicator. |
Does a filled blue circle mean they read your message?
No. A filled circle with a check is associated with delivery, not proof of reading. PhoneArena’s 2015 guide and a 2016 TIME interview excerpt both distinguish delivery from read status; they describe the recipient’s profile image as the seen indicator. These are older secondary sources, not a current, official Meta reference for every icon variant: PhoneArena’s Messenger status guide and TIME’s interview excerpt.

Messenger’s appearance can differ across versions and surfaces, so identify the icon by its fill, check mark, and position next to a sent message rather than by color alone. Meta’s help page confirms that chat themes and colors can apply across Messenger, messenger.com, the desktop app, and Facebook messages; it does not define the status icons: Meta’s instructions for changing a chat theme or color.

If the open sending circle stays there
A persistent open circle means the message is still being sent. A slow or interrupted connection is one plausible reason to check, but the icon alone does not establish the cause. Check your connection and the app’s current state; do not treat the sending symbol as evidence about the recipient’s behavior.
What these indicators cannot tell you
A delivery or sending icon by itself does not establish that someone is online, ignoring you, or has blocked you. The status sequence describes the message’s progress, not the recipient’s intent.
