Publishers use it to recommend content, earn revenue from sponsored items, and develop audiences; advertisers use its Realize platform to distribute and measure campaigns across publisher inventory. Recommendations that appear beside articles are paid placements when labeled sponsored—not necessarily independent editorial endorsements.
What Taboola is—and why it appears on websites
Taboola is software that connects publishers offering digital ad inventory with advertisers seeking audiences. It is not a publication or a device. A reader may encounter its recommendation widgets on a publisher’s site or app, often showing links to articles, videos, products, or services. Taboola’s own “Why Taboola?” page names sites including MSN, NBC News, Daily Mail, The Weather Channel, EuroSport, and Yahoo! Japan as examples; those examples come from the company and may change. Taboola’s publisher help page explains its stated publisher offering.
How Taboola recommendations work
Taboola says its predictive engine analyzes hundreds of real-time signals to match content with people likely to engage. Its examples include geography, page context, device, and social-media trends. The company says recommendations can be integrated into websites, mobile apps, and email newsletters, and that publishers share revenue generated by sponsored items. These are Taboola’s descriptions of its system; the cited materials do not establish an independent audit of how the recommendation model performs.
Recommendations may serve different purposes: recirculating a publisher’s own material, promoting sponsored content, or helping acquire an audience. The appearance of a recommendation does not by itself mean the publisher’s editors independently endorse its destination. Taboola’s help page cites the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s principles that native recommendations should be relevant, opt-in, and consistent with the surrounding content’s form and function. Readers should look for clear sponsored or promotional labels.
What publishers use Taboola for
Publishers can use the platform for programmatic display and native-ad revenue, personalized recommendations, content recirculation, audience acquisition, loyalty features, and reporting. Taboola also describes DeeperDive as an on-site generative-AI answer engine. These are capabilities presented on the company’s publisher product page, rather than independent findings about their effectiveness.

Taboola says publishers retain editorial control over promoted items and can use keyword filters and domain blocks. Its help page also says new campaigns are reviewed by a policy team, and describes optimization toward actions such as video views, email sign-ups, or app downloads. Publishers assessing the service should determine whether the controls and reporting available to them are adequate for their editorial policies and business goals.
What advertisers use Taboola Realize for
Taboola calls its advertiser platform Realize. The company describes buying performance advertising across publisher sites, homepages, articles, and OEM placements, using audience signals and formats such as display and vertical video. It also advertises generative-AI creative tools. Taboola positions Realize as a way to pursue performance advertising beyond search and social; that positioning is not a neutral comparison or a guarantee of return on investment. See the Realize product page for the company’s current description.

Campaign implementation can involve more than uploading an ad. Taboola’s developer documentation covers campaign management through Backstage API, conversion tracking by pixel or server-to-server integration, dynamic creative, mobile SDKs, and web integrations. Exact technical requirements depend on the integration, so advertisers and developers should consult the current documentation.
What Taboola’s published scale and results mean
Taboola’s help page, updated October 7, 2026, says its platform delivers more than 450 billion recommendations per month. A separate “Why Taboola?” page, updated October 6, 2026, reports more than 1.4 billion unique visitors per month. These are company-reported figures, not independently verified audience measurements in the cited materials; they use different units and should not be treated as interchangeable.
In a July 24, 2024 press release, Taboola said Taboola for Audience had generated nearly 10 percent more traffic for select publisher sites and described nearly 600 million daily active users as the scale of the audience data and distribution it referenced. The traffic result applies to selected publishers as reported by the company, not to every customer or campaign. The release’s customer quotations are testimonials reproduced by Taboola, not independent evaluations. Read the July 24, 2024 announcement for the company’s context.

Start with the role you need the platform to play. Publisher monetization and audience development are different buying decisions from advertiser acquisition, even when both involve the same company.

- Define the outcome: Decide whether you are seeking sponsored revenue, more page recirculation, new audience, engagement, or a measurable conversion.
- Check the inventory and format: Confirm the placements, devices, and creative formats available to your account, rather than assuming every placement described on a product page is available in every market or campaign.
- Review controls and visibility: Publishers should examine editorial filters and reporting; advertisers should check targeting, exclusions, placement reporting, and their ability to assess traffic quality.
- Plan measurement and integration: Establish conversion tracking and attribution before judging results. Pixel, server-side, web, or mobile implementation needs can affect the work and interpretation involved.
- Assess the economics with your own data: Compare revenue or conversion value with costs and the quality of resulting traffic. The official product pages describe capabilities, but do not provide an independent cost-effectiveness benchmark or universal outcome.
The available first-party material supports an explanation of what Taboola says its products do. It does not establish comparative superiority, customer satisfaction, privacy outcomes, or performance that applies universally.
