These are specially configured league devices, not ordinary retail tablets, and the NFL has not identified an exact consumer model number.
What the NFL’s Surface tablets do
The tablets run the NFL’s Sideline Viewing System, which gives coaches and players high-resolution color still images of plays. Users can zoom in, annotate images, review earlier plays, and tag images for later review. The league describes the system as a coaching aid for making adjustments and instructing players during games. Its technology overview also says teams can use a whiteboard and view near-real-time statistics.

NFL Football Operations says the system gives users access to play images at least 30 seconds faster than the previous process. That is the league’s comparison, not an independently reported performance test.

What changed in the 2025 upgrade
The NFL says it upgraded the devices used on sidelines and in coaches’ booths to Surface Copilot+ PCs in 2025. The league describes the new devices as faster, with longer battery life and native AI capabilities. It also says AI-powered filtering can help users find moments such as scoring drives, turnovers, and penalties. The NFL has not published numeric measurements for speed, battery life, or the impact of these features.

Why these are not ordinary retail tablets
Microsoft worked with the NFL and its Competition Committee to customize off-the-shelf devices for league requirements. According to the NFL’s Sideline Technology page, those requirements include functioning in heat, cold, rain, and glare; withstanding occasional drops; lasting through a game; connecting reliably to the stadium network; and working with an attached stylus when users are wearing gloves. The league source identifies the Surface Copilot+ PC family, but not the specific retail model or hardware configuration used for each league device.
How the NFL controls tablet access
The NFL says the tablets are identically configured so teams cannot access the internet or install apps or features that could create a competitive advantage. The devices are locked away until shortly before kickoff, provided for coaching use, and collected after the game. The NFL also says the home team is responsible for providing the league-issued sideline viewing system for both clubs.

An NFL equity-rule page lists 16 Surface Pro 3 tablets in each bench area and 12 in the coaches’ booth. Those are explicitly listed as Surface Pro 3 quantities on a policy page; they should not be treated as the current inventory or the 2025 configuration.

NFL Football Operations says all teams had access to league-provided, specially configured Surface tablets on the sideline starting in the 2014 season. An Associated Press report republished by NFL.com covered that introduction as a shift from black-and-white printouts. Its descriptions of devices and quantities concern the original rollout, not today’s system.
