There is no single “best” roughness value for every protective coating. For blast-cleaned steel, use the surface-profile range and grade stated in the coating manufacturer’s current technical data sheet (TDS) and the project specification. The correct target depends on the coating system, steel condition, exposure environment and preparation method.
Surface profile is only one release criterion. Before coating, you also need the specified level of rust and mill-scale removal, acceptable soluble salts and dust, no oil or grease, and suitable environmental conditions. Measure the profile with the method accepted by the specification; do not transfer a value from one product to another.

Why “best roughness” is not one universal number
In coating work, roughness usually means the surface profile left by abrasive blast cleaning: the distance between peaks and valleys on the prepared steel surface. It is commonly reported in micrometres (µm) and, when a comparator is used, by a profile grade such as Fine, Medium or Coarse.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The profile must suit the coating film that will cover it. A thin-film system, a high-build system and a lining can have different limits even when they are applied to the same steel. The specified abrasive, blasting pressure, angle, stand-off distance and number of passes also influence the resulting profile. Exposure conditions and the design life required by the project can change the preparation requirement again.

ISO’s 8501, 8502 and 8503 series provide ways to describe cleanliness and profile, while ISO 8504 addresses preparation methods. ISO explains that these standards do not themselves select a coating system or prescribe one surface quality for every situation. Those requirements come from the applicable coating documentation, national standards and project codes. The selected quality must be compatible with the exposure environment and achievable with the specified cleaning procedure.
How to choose the target for a particular job
- Identify the exact coating system. Record the manufacturer, product name, formulation or component set, intended dry-film thickness and application method. Use the latest TDS and any project-specific application guide, not a remembered value from a different product.
- Read the surface-preparation section in full. Profile is often listed alongside cleanliness grade, abrasive type, dust limits, soluble-salt limits, climatic restrictions and overcoating intervals. A profile number cannot be evaluated separately from those conditions.
- Check the project specification and governing code. If the contract specifies a profile grade, numerical range or measurement standard, that requirement controls unless the responsible engineer formally changes it.
- Confirm the substrate and preparation process. The guidance in this article concerns abrasive-blast-cleaned steel. A mechanically abraded surface, galvanized steel, concrete, wood or a previously coated surface needs the method and limits written for that substrate.
- Resolve conflicts before blasting. If the TDS and project specification differ, obtain a written technical decision from the coating manufacturer, owner or engineer. Do not average the two ranges or select the more convenient one.
- Define how acceptance will be measured. State the permitted instrument or comparator, the applicable ISO method, calibration requirements, sampling plan and record form before work begins. Two parties can otherwise obtain different-looking results from the same surface.
Two manufacturer examples show why copying a number is unsafe
Two Jotun application guides issued in 2026 illustrate the variation within one manufacturer’s documentation:
| Guide date | Example profile range | Profile grade | Measurement methods named in the guide | How to use the example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 March 2026 | 50–100 µm | Medium to Coarse G (ISO 8503-2) | Testex replica tape to ISO 8503-5 or a stylus instrument to ISO 8503-4 | Applies only to the specified application guide and coating instructions |
| 7 April 2026 | 30–85 µm | Fine to Medium G (ISO 8503-2) | Methods stated in that guide | Another product-specific example, not a general industry target |
These ranges are evidence that even documents from one manufacturer can differ. They are examples, not recommendations for an unidentified coating. The product’s current TDS and the project specification remain the controlling documents.
What a surface-profile value actually describes
A numerical profile is an average peak-to-valley measurement over the area sampled. It is not the same thing as the visual cleanliness grade, the blast abrasive size or the coating’s dry-film thickness. A profile grade from a comparator is a visual and tactile classification, whereas tape and stylus methods produce numerical readings.
Units matter. A reading of 60 µm is not automatically acceptable merely because it falls inside a range found on the internet. It must be inside the range for the specified coating and obtained with the method that the specification accepts. The same surface can produce somewhat different numerical results when measured by different techniques, so the method and its limitations belong in the inspection record.
Profile is only one part of surface readiness
ISO identifies several conditions that affect protective-coating performance. Before releasing steel for painting, check each item required by the project:
- Rust and mill scale: confirm the required degree of removal and the visual preparation grade.
- Soluble salts: test when required, particularly where contamination from marine exposure, de-icing salts or process chemicals is possible.
- Dust: remove blast residue and verify the specified dust level. Dust left in valleys can interfere with adhesion even when the profile number is correct.
- Oil and grease: degrease before abrasive blasting when required; blasting alone is not a substitute for removing oily contamination.
- Moisture and condensation risk: follow the coating guide’s limits for steel temperature, air temperature, relative humidity and dew-point separation.
- Sharp edges, welds and defects: apply the edge-rounding, weld-cleaning and defect-repair requirements in the project specification.
- Recontamination: inspect again if prepared steel has been stored, handled or exposed to a new contaminant before painting.
A profile inspection therefore cannot be used as a pass for the entire surface. Cleanliness, environmental readings and profile each need their own acceptance decision.
How to measure blast-cleaned steel
Use the technique named by the specification. The following methods are documented for blast-cleaned steel, but they are not interchangeable without checking the required standard and acceptance criteria.

Replica tape with a suitable gauge
ISO 8503-5 describes field measurement with replica tape: the tape records a replica of the blasted surface, and a compatible gauge measures the compressed replica. The method can leave a permanent physical record and can be useful on curved surfaces. Jotun identifies Testex tape to ISO 8503-5 as one accepted method in a 10 March 2026 application guide.
The public ISO page for ISO/DIS 8503-5 describes commercial tape grades for average peak-to-valley profiles from 12 µm to 150 µm. That span is the stated scope of the measurement method, not a coating recommendation. The page identifies itself as a draft or DIS page, so verify the final publication status and edition required by the contract before citing it as the definitive current standard.
Choose tape and gauge grades that cover the expected profile. Follow the tape maker’s instructions for burnishing, gauge zeroing, reading and storage. Record the tape grade, gauge identification, calibration status, location and reading. A tape reading obtained with an unsuitable range or an unverified gauge is not a defensible acceptance result.

A stylus instrument traces the prepared surface and reports a numerical profile. Jotun’s 10 March 2026 guide names a stylus instrument to ISO 8503-4 as an alternative to replica tape for its specified work.
Use the instrument’s specified probe, cutoff or evaluation settings and calibration procedure. Confirm that the probe can reach the surface geometry without riding over debris or being damaged by sharp peaks. Save the instrument identification and readings in the inspection record, and use the acceptance limits written for that instrument in the project documents.
Profile comparator
ISO 8503-2 describes visual and tactile assessment with profile comparators. A comparator gives a grade such as Fine, Medium or Coarse rather than a direct micrometre reading. Compare the prepared surface with the correct comparator segments under the lighting and viewing conditions required by the procedure.
A comparator is useful when the specification is written in profile grades, but it should not be silently substituted for a numerical method when the contract requires measured micrometres. Record the comparator type, grade decision, inspector and inspection location.
Method-selection checklist
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the project specification accept this method? | An instrument can be technically capable yet contractually unacceptable. |
| Does it provide a numerical value or a visual/tactile grade? | The result must match the form of the stated acceptance range. |
| Is it suitable for the expected profile and geometry? | Range, probe access and curved surfaces can affect usability. |
| Are calibration and technique errors controlled? | Different methods and operators can produce different readings. |
| Can the result be recorded and audited? | Traceable records support release, rework and later warranty questions. |
Field procedure for verifying a specified profile
- Gather the controlling documents. Have the current TDS, project specification, preparation standard, approved inspection plan and instrument instructions at the work area.
- Confirm the surface is ready to measure. Remove loose abrasive and dust as required, and verify that the area has not been exposed to moisture, salts, oil or handling contamination.
- Check the equipment. Inspect the replica tape and gauge, stylus probe or comparator. Verify calibration or zero checks required by the equipment and specification. Reject damaged or out-of-range consumables.
- Define the inspection locations. Use the project sampling plan. Include representative flat areas, weld zones, edges and difficult geometry when the specification requires them; do not select only the smoothest-looking area.
- Measure using the approved technique. For tape, create and read the replica exactly as instructed. For a stylus, use the prescribed probe and settings. For a comparator, make the visual/tactile comparison under consistent conditions.
- Record complete data. Note date, area or component, operator, method, equipment identification, calibration status, individual readings or grades and any observations about contamination or defects.
- Compare with the specified acceptance range. Keep the method, units and grade definition attached to the result. Do not convert a comparator grade into an invented micrometre value.
- Hold nonconforming areas. If a result is below or above the permitted range, identify the affected area, notify the responsible authority and follow the approved rework procedure. Reblast, change abrasive or alter technique only when authorized.
- Reinspect after correction. Repeat profile and cleanliness checks after rework. A new blast pass can change both profile and contamination status.
- Release only after all criteria pass. Profile acceptance does not waive salt, dust, oil, environmental or visual-cleanliness checks.
How to interpret readings and measurement differences
Small differences between methods or operators do not automatically indicate a defective surface. Replica tape compresses a physical replica, a stylus follows a trace, and a comparator relies on visual and tactile judgment. ISO notes that measurement techniques may yield somewhat different values. That is why the contract should identify the method and why readings should be interpreted with the method’s stated error and operating instructions in mind.

Do not combine results from different methods into one unexplained average. If tape was used for one area and a stylus for another, label the areas and methods separately. If a result is close to a limit, repeat it according to the inspection plan or obtain a technical decision rather than rounding it into compliance.
Trend data can reveal process drift. A series of readings moving toward the upper limit may indicate a change in abrasive, nozzle condition or blasting practice even when the current parts still pass. Recording individual values, not just “pass,” makes that trend visible.
What happens when the profile is too shallow or too coarse?
A profile that is too shallow may provide less mechanical keying than the coating system expects. The consequence is not determined by roughness alone; coating chemistry, film thickness and service environment also matter. If the system calls for a minimum profile, falling below it is a specification failure even when the steel looks clean.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchAn excessively coarse profile creates taller peaks and deeper valleys for the coating to cover. Depending on the system and specified film thickness, that can increase coating consumption, leave peaks with inadequate coverage or make it harder to achieve a continuous protective film. These are reasons to treat an upper limit as a real requirement rather than an optional target.
Never “fix” an out-of-range result by changing the coating thickness informally. Any change to the coating system, number of coats or film thickness requires approval under the project’s technical-control process.

Documentation that protects the coating decision
A useful inspection record lets another person reconstruct what was measured and why it passed. Include:
- project, component and exact inspection location;
- coating product, system and current document revision;
- specified profile range and grade, with units;
- preparation method and abrasive information when required;
- measurement standard and method;
- instrument, tape and gauge identification;
- calibration or verification status;
- individual readings, comparator grades and inspector name;
- rust, mill-scale, dust, salt, oil and grease observations or test results;
- steel and air temperatures, relative humidity and dew-point information when required;
- nonconformances, corrective actions, retest results and release authorization.
For replica tape, retain the physical replicas when the quality plan calls for a permanent record. Keep records with the coating batch and application report so profile evidence can be traced to the finished work.
Limits of the ISO 8503-5 replica-tape scope
The ISO 8503-5 method described publicly by ISO is for field measurement of profile produced by abrasive blast cleaning before paint or another protective coating. Its stated 12–150 µm span describes what the commercial tape grades can measure under that method; it does not say that any value in that span is suitable for a coating.
Do not casually apply this method to concrete, wood, intact factory coatings or non-blast preparation. Those surfaces have different texture, porosity and preparation issues and require the standards and instructions written for them. If a project uses a different substrate, ask for the specified profile definition and test method before selecting equipment.

A decision rule you can use on every project
- Start with the coating and contract, not a favorite number.
- Translate the requirement into a measurable range or grade.
- Select an accepted method that suits the expected profile and geometry.
- Control calibration, operator technique and sampling.
- Verify cleanliness and environment independently.
- Document the actual result and hold borderline or failed areas for disposition.
That process produces a defensible surface for coating. The “best” roughness is therefore the product-specific profile that the current technical documents require, achieved by an approved preparation method and verified alongside every other surface-readiness condition.
