What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Structured Outputs can constrain a completed model response to a supported JSON Schema; they cannot establish that a financial model is correct. A response may have every required field and still contain a wrong calculation, stale input, unsound assumption, or unsupported conclusion. Treat schema conformance as a parsing and representation control, then validate the financial content separately.
What does Structured Outputs guarantee?
OpenAI describes Structured Outputs as a way to make a model response adhere to a developer-supplied JSON Schema. The schema can specify fields, data types, required values, and permitted enum values, helping an application handle the response predictably. The feature is available for tool or function arguments and for structured response formats; the choice depends on whether the model is meant to invoke application functionality or return a shaped answer. See the Structured Outputs guide.

The guarantee is conditional: the request must use a compatible model and API configuration, and the schema must stay within the supported subset. OpenAI documents limitations on supported schema features, so do not assume every JSON Schema keyword is enforced. Check the current API guide when designing or changing a schema.

OpenAI’s August 6, 2024 announcement says a response reliably matches the supplied schema when it does not include a refusal and has not been prematurely interrupted, as indicated by finish_reason. Refusals and token-limit interruptions therefore need explicit handling rather than blind parsing.

Does valid JSON mean the answer is accurate?
No. JSON validity means the text can be parsed as JSON; schema conformance means it fits the specified structure. Neither says the values are true or that the model’s financial reasoning is sound. A well-formed object could contain a fabricated revenue figure, a formula error, inconsistent periods, a stale market price, an unbalanced balance sheet, or a recommendation unsupported by the inputs.
Schema design can make omissions more visible by requiring fields such as period, currency, source, and assumptions. It can also limit values where the schema supports that constraint. Those controls describe and constrain representation; they do not independently verify arithmetic, accounting relationships, unit conversions, provenance, source freshness, or whether assumptions make economic sense.
Structured Outputs vs. JSON mode
JSON mode aims to produce valid JSON, but does not ensure that the output follows a particular schema. Structured Outputs is the better fit when an application needs adherence to a supported schema. Unconstrained text parsing offers still less structural assurance and can require brittle extraction logic. These modes address output shape, not financial correctness. Consult OpenAI’s guide for current API behavior and compatibility.

How to validate an AI-generated financial model
Use independent checks after generation. The following sequence separates delivery failures from schema and financial errors:
Rank #3
- Check completion and refusal status. Handle API errors, refusal indicators, and incomplete or truncated generations. Do not treat a partial response as a finished model.
- Validate the schema. Confirm required keys, types, enums, and supported constraints. Treat unsupported JSON Schema features as unenforced unless the API documentation says otherwise.
- Recalculate material outputs. Independently compute key metrics and test accounting identities. Check sign conventions, units, currency, date and period alignment, permitted ranges, and whether scenarios relate to one another coherently.
- Verify evidence and freshness. Retain the source, reporting period, date, and retrieval time for each material input. Confirm that the source covers the required data and that its update schedule is appropriate. OpenAI notes that financial dataset coverage and update schedules vary, and some pricing or included datasets may be delayed; see its financial-services guidance.
- Require appropriate human review. Have a qualified reviewer assess material assumptions, source support, calculations, and conclusions before using the output in client materials or investment decisions.
For an audit trail, preserve the inputs, schema version, model and API configuration, source metadata, raw response, completion status, validation results, and reviewer decisions. This makes it possible to identify whether a problem arose from incomplete generation, structural mismatch, bad inputs, or financial logic.
What OpenAI’s schema-following result does—and does not—show
OpenAI reported that gpt-4o-2024-08-06 achieved 100% on its complex JSON-schema-following evaluation, compared with less than 40% for gpt-4-0613. Those are vendor-reported schema-adherence results from 2024, not a test of financial-model accuracy, investment performance, or a universal guarantee across models and schemas. The result supports the case for structured responses when format reliability matters; it is not evidence that financial calculations or assumptions are correct.

Choosing an implementation approach
Compare approaches against the needs of your own application, not just whether output looks parseable:
- Schema enforcement: Does the API mode enforce the required structure, and does the target model support it?
- Schema scope: Are the constraints you need in the supported JSON Schema subset?
- Failure visibility: Can your application detect refusals, interruptions, and API errors and keep them from reaching downstream calculations?
- Financial controls: Can you independently validate formulas, accounting identities, ranges, units, provenance, dates, and scenario logic?
- Auditability: Can you retain the inputs, source details, configuration, response, and review record?
- Operational fit: Measure latency, reliability, and cost with your own workload; documentation alone does not establish how an approach will perform in your application.
OpenAI’s guidance for financial services says ChatGPT is a tool for financial research, not financial or investment advice. It also advises checking important information against supporting sources and reviewing outputs before client or investment use. Treat model-generated financial work as an input to a controlled process, not as an independently verified result. See ChatGPT for Financial Services.
