Depending on the recipient and reporting rules, that record can show your name, mailing address, occupation, employer, contribution amount and the committee you supported. A donation can point to support for that recipient, but it does not prove your full political beliefs or how you vote.
What information is public in a federal donation record?
When a federal committee must itemize a contribution, it reports the donor’s name, mailing address, occupation, employer, amount and recipient. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) makes committee reports available on its website within 48 hours of receipt. That is the stated publication window, not an average measured delay. A mailing address is not necessarily your home address. The FEC says a committee may use an address where you can receive mail, including a work address or post-office box. FEC guidance on individual contributions

Seeing your name beside a recipient and an amount can reveal that you financially supported that committee. It does not, by itself, establish your complete ideology, your vote in any election or your private beliefs. Someone could also try to match public campaign-finance details with information available elsewhere online, but the sources do not establish how often that happens or how reliably it identifies a person.

Does a donation under $200 stay private?
No federal rule guarantees that every contribution below $200 stays off public records. For federal candidate committees, individual contributions generally must be itemized when they exceed $200 in aggregate during the election cycle. PACs and party committees apply an aggregate threshold over the calendar year instead. The threshold is based on the applicable aggregate, not simply whether one transaction is $200 or less. Committees may itemize contributions below the required threshold. A conduit—an intermediary that forwards or collects contributions—must disclose all earmarked contributions regardless of amount if it is subject to that requirement; the ultimate recipient may also have disclosure obligations. Federal committees must make best efforts to request identifying information, but the FEC guidance does not legally require donors to provide it. The FEC says a committee may accept no more than $50 from an anonymous source, so anonymity is not a general way to make a larger federal donation privately. FEC guidance on individual contributions
Federal rules do not cover every political donation
State and local disclosure requirements differ from federal rules and from one another. The National Conference of State Legislatures’ May 2026 summary says most states’ thresholds for additional contributor information fall between $50 and $200, with $100 the most common. Requirements can also depend on the office, reporting entity and other circumstances. Check the current rules of the relevant state disclosure agency for a state or local contribution. Some tax-exempt political organizations described in section 527 have a separate public filing requirement. The IRS says these organizations report a contributor’s name and address, and an individual contributor’s occupation and employer, on Schedule A to Form 8872 when contributions aggregate to $200 or more in a calendar year. This is an IRS filing context, distinct from FEC rules for federal candidate committees. IRS filing requirements for political organizations
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Public records are not unrestricted data for commercial use
The FEC says information about individual contributors taken from its reports cannot be sold or used to solicit contributions, including charitable contributions, or for commercial purposes. Its guidance describes an exception for newspapers, magazines, books and similar communications when their principal purpose is not solicitation or commercial activity. Public availability therefore does not mean anyone may use the information for any purpose, but the restriction is not a blanket ban on republication. What to do if a donation record is wrong
- Contact the political committee that filed the report and explain what information is inaccurate.
- If appropriate, the committee may file an amended report with the correction.
- The FEC updates its database after receiving the amendment. The original filing remains public, and copies may also exist on third-party sites. FEC guidance on correcting donation information
