Turning off Location services in Windows 11 blocks Windows and apps from getting your device’s location through the Windows location service. Automatic time-zone adjustment and Find My Device depend on that setting, and location-powered app features may lose useful information. It does not switch off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, or cellular hardware, and it does not guarantee that every app or service can no longer infer your location.
What breaks if I turn off location in Windows 11?
The main effect is that Windows and apps lose access to device location through the Windows location service. That can affect Windows features and app functions that rely on a location input, but the precise result depends on the feature and whether it has another way to estimate location.

- Automatic time zone: Windows lists automatic time-zone setting as a feature enabled by device location. If location is off, do not expect Windows to update the time zone automatically. Manually selected time zones and the clock itself are separate; Microsoft does not say they stop working.
- Find My Device: The feature needs device location to be on, as well as advance setup and the required account conditions.
- Location-based app features: Directions, nearby shops or restaurants, and geofencing may stop working or become less useful if an app loses its location input.
- Some contextual Windows features: A limited set of experiences may still use IP address for area context, such as taskbar weather. That is not the same as access to precise device location through the Windows location service.
Microsoft describes the setting as enabling features such as automatic time-zone setting and Find My Device in its Windows location service and privacy guidance.

No. Microsoft says Find My Device works when location is turned on for the device. It must also be enabled before the device is lost, and it requires a personal Microsoft account and an administrator account. When someone attempts to locate the device, users on it receive a notification. See Microsoft’s instructions for finding and locking a lost Windows device.

Find My Device is tied to the device-level location setting, not just the app-permission switch. Microsoft notes that device location can remain on for this feature even if other users on the device turn off location access for their apps.
Does turning off location stop apps tracking me?
It blocks apps from getting device location through Windows location services, but it is not a guarantee that every app or website can no longer estimate where you are. Microsoft says third-party software may use other signals, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular networks, or IP address. Desktop apps may also handle location differently from Store-style apps and may not appear in Windows’ app-permission lists.

Choose the scope that matches your goal
- Turn off device Location services: This is the broadest Windows location control. Windows and apps cannot use the Windows location service while it is off.
- Turn off app access for your account: In Settings, switch off “Let apps access your location” to stop apps from receiving location through Windows for that user. This does not necessarily turn off location-dependent device features such as Find My Device.
- Block one app: If Location services is available, manage which apps may receive precise location. Also check the app’s own settings and privacy policy, particularly for desktop apps.
Browser websites have a separate layer of control: they can require permission in both the browser and the individual site. Windows location settings do not replace those browser controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWill automatic time zone still work?
Automatic time-zone adjustment depends on device location, so it may stop updating when Location services is off. You can still select a time zone manually; the documented dependency concerns automatic adjustment, not the clock or every date-and-time function.

Does disabling location turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?
No. Location services and the radios are separate controls. Turning off Location services does not itself disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, or cellular hardware. Those signals can be used to estimate location by other services, so switching off Location services is not equivalent to switching off every possible location signal. Disabling radios is a different and more disruptive choice that can also affect internet access, calls, messaging, and connected peripherals.
What are the exceptions?
- Emergency calls: Microsoft says Windows will attempt to determine and share precise location for an emergency call regardless of location settings. See Microsoft’s location-service privacy guidance.
- IP-based area context: A limited set of Windows experiences may use IP address for broad area context even while Location services is off.
- Other services’ estimates: Third-party software may infer location from signals outside the Windows location service. For Windows desktop-app privacy details, see Microsoft’s desktop apps and privacy guidance.
Where are the Windows 11 location controls?
- Open device location settings: Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Location. An administrator can control whether Location services is available on the device.
- Choose user-level app access: On the same page, use “Let apps access your location” to control app access for your account. If device Location services is off, switching this user-level option on cannot restore access.
- Review individual apps: When Location services is available, use the app controls to choose which apps receive location and review recent access activity.
- Check desktop apps separately: Some desktop apps do not appear in Windows privacy lists and may use their own controls or other signals. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows app privacy settings guidance.
- If a setting is locked: On a work-managed PC, an organization may control the device-wide option. If Windows says settings are managed by your organization, contact your administrator.
What happens to location history?
Microsoft says local Windows location-history storage and its associated settings were removed in March 2025. Current guidance says location may still be periodically saved in the cloud for a signed-in Microsoft account when Location services is enabled. You can clear that data from the Microsoft account location activity page; do not look for the removed local-history controls.
