This keeps the separated liquid from continuing with the steam toward the turbine. The separator does not produce steam: heat in the reactor boils water, and the separator acts on the mixture that boiling creates.
Where the steam separator fits
A BWR sends steam from the reactor vessel toward a turbine-generator. Before it reaches the main steamline, the mixture leaving the core passes through moisture-separation equipment inside the vessel. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) describes two stages of moisture separation, where water droplets are removed before steam enters the steamline.

- Reactor core: Water heated in the core boils, producing a steam-water mixture.
- Steam separators: The mixture passes through separation stages that remove entrained liquid droplets.
- Steam dryer: Steam then passes through a separate drying assembly above the separators.
- Main steamline and turbine-generator: The steam leaves the vessel and flows toward the turbine, which drives the generator.
This is the BWR steam path. It is not a description of every nuclear plant: a pressurized-water reactor (PWR) keeps its primary coolant from boiling and uses a steam generator to produce the steam that drives its turbine.

How a steam separator removes droplets
The separator acts on a flow that contains both steam and liquid water. In the fixed axial-flow design described by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the mixture rises through a standpipe and meets vanes that set it swirling. The resulting vortex uses centrifugal forces to move water out of the steam stream.

In that design, the separated water exits from the lower part of the separator and rejoins the surrounding flow in the reactor vessel. Steam leaves from the top and enters the wet-steam region below the dryer. The IAEA description is specific to this design; it should not be taken to mean all BWR separators have identical internals or flow arrangements.
The useful distinction is between making steam and separating the flow: heat produces the steam-water mixture, while the separator removes liquid carried with it. It does not turn the reactor’s water into steam or serve as the turbine.

Separator versus steam dryer
A steam separator and a steam dryer are distinct assemblies, even though both help reduce moisture in the steam path. The separator is encountered first; the dryer is mounted above it and provides another moisture-removal stage.

Calling the separator a “dryer” blurs the order and the equipment boundary: the NRC describes two stages of moisture separation, while the IAEA account distinguishes the separator below from the dryer above it.

Why the BWR and PWR distinction matters
The in-vessel separator explanation applies to a BWR because water boils in the reactor vessel and the resulting steam-water mixture travels through the vessel’s steam path. A PWR uses a different arrangement: its primary coolant remains pressurized rather than boiling in the reactor vessel, and a steam generator produces the steam used to drive the turbine. So an explanation of a BWR’s vessel-mounted separator should not be generalized into a claim that all nuclear plants send a steam-water mixture from the core through the same equipment.

The cited NRC and IAEA material establishes the separator’s place in the BWR steam path, its droplet-removal purpose, and one documented separation mechanism. It does not establish a general efficiency percentage, moisture-carryover limit, or performance ranking among separator designs. Those figures should not be inferred from the equipment’s purpose alone.

The sources also describe equipment and flow paths, not a universal maintenance procedure. An NRC Information Notice dated November 5, 1984, documented a failure to properly install a steam separator at Vermont Yankee. That historical event shows why correct installation matters, but it is not evidence of a current fleet-wide condition or a substitute for plant-specific operating procedures.
