Emergency calls may still be possible through another carrier, depending on your location and which networks are available, but ordinary cellular service has not been restored. Try Airplane Mode and a restart first; if the status remains, check your SIM or eSIM and contact your carrier to investigate account, coverage, or outage issues.
What “SOS Only” means
When “SOS” or “SOS only” appears in the status bar, your iPhone has lost its connection to your carrier’s cellular network. Apple says the phone may attempt to route emergency calls through another carrier’s network if one is available. That possibility depends on location and network availability; it is not a guarantee, and it does not mean regular calls, texts, or mobile data are working. Apple’s guidance on SOS, No Service, and Searching and the iPhone User Guide describe these limits.

“No Service” and “Searching” also indicate that the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. The status wording can vary; the practical point is that your own carrier connection is unavailable. Emergency calling through another carrier, where supported, is separate from ordinary service. Satellite emergency features are also separate and depend on the iPhone model and region.

Work through these checks in order. The first steps are reversible; later checks may require your carrier’s help.

- Refresh the cellular connection. Open Settings, turn on Airplane Mode, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. If a usable cellular network is available, the iPhone may reconnect.
- Restart the iPhone. After it turns back on, check whether the carrier connection returns.
- Check iOS and carrier settings. Install the latest iOS update. While connected to Wi-Fi, open Settings > General > About and wait for a carrier settings update prompt; install it if one appears. A new SIM may require settings from the new carrier.
- Confirm the affected line is active. On a Dual SIM iPhone, open Settings > Cellular, select the affected line, and make sure it is turned on. If the line is missing, ask your carrier to set up the eSIM or provide a physical SIM. If a physical SIM is damaged or does not fit, contact the carrier about a replacement.
- If you are traveling, check roaming and plan support. Make sure the correct cellular line is selected and data roaming is enabled where appropriate. Confirm with your carrier that your plan supports service at your destination.
- Ask your carrier to check the connection. The carrier can review account standing, coverage, local outages, plan setup, and whether the device is blocked or barred. For an imported phone, ask whether local IMEI registration is required. These account- and network-specific details are not something you can verify from the iPhone’s status bar.
- Escalate if the carrier finds no account or network issue. Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics on iPhone models running iOS 18 or later. If your carrier rules out its network and your account but suspects a device fault, contact Apple about service.
Why SOS Only can persist
The status alone does not identify the cause. It tells you the iPhone is not connected to its carrier, but the reason may involve the local network, your account or plan, the device’s eligibility, or the SIM/eSIM line setup. In a place with no usable carrier coverage, changing settings on the phone may not restore service. Your carrier is the best source for checking coverage, outages, account status, and device restrictions.
Use network reset cautiously
Reset Network Settings is not a first-line fix for SOS Only. Apple notes that this reset erases saved Wi-Fi passwords and preferred networks, along with VPN and APN settings. Try the connection refresh, restart, update, and line checks first; if you consider a reset, follow Apple’s troubleshooting guidance and be prepared to restore any settings you need.

Emergency calls are not ordinary service
If SOS Only is displayed, do not assume that you can make an emergency call: routing depends on local rules and another carrier’s network being available. Conversely, the status does not mean emergency calling is impossible everywhere. Follow local emergency guidance, and do not treat the SOS Only indicator as evidence that satellite emergency service is active.
