What Snap’s SPECS AR Glasses Can Actually Do

Snap’s SPECS are standalone AR glasses with a large virtual display, world-anchored overlays, and hand and voice control. Here is what Snap claims, what it has published as specifications, and what remains unverified.

Snap’s SPECS are standalone augmented reality glasses that place digital displays and spatial experiences over your view of the real world, controlled by hands and voice. Snap says they can show a large virtual screen, overlay directions and measurements, run AR Lenses, and pair with your phone for calls, notifications, and music. The September 16, 2026 preorder price is $2,195 with a $200 refundable deposit, and Snap expects shipping to begin later in fall 2026 in the United States, United Kingdom, and France.

Nearly everything below is Snap’s own description of the product. Snap’s published figures and examples are the company’s claims. At the time of writing, we have not found independent testing of consumer units that confirms comfort, battery life, or visual quality, so each figure is attributed to its source.

What Snap says SPECS can do

Snap positions SPECS as a computer you wear rather than a phone you look down at. The company describes four broad capability areas, each of which it illustrates with examples.

A large virtual display in your field of view

The see-through display is intended for streaming video, casting a screen, browsing, and working on virtual workspaces and whiteboards. To give a sense of scale, Snap compares the viewing area to a 24-inch desktop monitor for work, or a 115-inch cinema screen seen from about ten feet away. Those comparisons describe how large the display should appear to the wearer; they are not measurements of brightness or sharpness.

Information anchored to the physical world

Snap describes heads-up directions, spatial measurements, contextual help, and digital objects placed in 3D space that stay attached to a location or surface. This is the core of the “augmented reality” pitch: the overlay is meant to respond to what you are looking at, not sit in a fixed corner of the view.

AR Lenses and shared experiences

Snap cites examples including reading a golf green, an interactive drum lesson, and an educational visualization of vector fields. Earlier developer examples, announced June 10, 2025 in Snap’s developer ecosystem announcement, included live translation and currency conversion, cooking guidance, and pool assistance. These are demonstrations of what the platform is meant to support. Snap has not promised that each example will be available at launch, and the company says developers have published hundreds of SPECS Lenses.

Hands and voice instead of a controller

Snap presents SPECS OS as an AI-native operating system built around natural interaction. For normal standalone use, Snap says the glasses do not need a separate puck or a tether. Interaction is through hand gestures and voice; Snap’s redesigned Snapchat experience, for example, lets you take a Snap with a finger snap and start hands-free video calls.

Phone pairing and contextual AI

When paired with a phone over Bluetooth, Snap says SPECS can take calls, show notifications, and play music. The company also describes SPECS Intelligence, a service that draws context from apps and tools you choose to connect and surfaces help across iPhone, Mac, and SPECS. That is a product description. Snap has not published independent evidence of how accurate or useful that assistance is.

Published specifications

The table below lists the figures Snap has published. The “Qualifier” column records who is making the claim and under what conditions.

Specification Snap’s figure Qualifier
Field of view 51 degrees Snap says its liquid-crystal-on-silicon display system delivers this (Snap Inc., 2026).
Color 16 million colors Snap’s stated display specification (Snap Inc., 2026).
Weight, Narrow Fit (47 mm) 132 g Snap’s listed weight for this frame size.
Weight, Wide Fit (52 mm) 136 g Snap’s listed weight for this frame size.
Mixed-use battery life Up to 4 hours Snap says mixed use includes audio/video playback, Lenses, AI assistance, and Bluetooth notifications.
Battery with charging case Up to 20 total hours Snap says the included case provides four additional charges. This is a combined-use figure stated by Snap, not an independent battery test.
Motion-to-photon latency 7 milliseconds Snap says this was verified using advanced robotic measurement systems. The method and results are Snap’s; no outside verification was found.
Patents More than 7,000 Snap says it filed these during SPECS development.
Software updates 10 Snap OS updates and more than 40 new features and APIs Snap says these came over the prior year and a half.

The spec sheet is the most concrete evidence Snap has released. What it does not contain is any independent measurement of comfort during long wear, outdoor legibility, or the quality of the overlay in everyday lighting. Snap has not published those tests, and we found none from independent reviewers of consumer units. Treat the battery and latency numbers as company measurements, not as expectations for your own use.

What ownership involves

The official SPECS product page covers the frame options, what is in the box, and the connectivity choices.

Choosing a frame size

SPECS comes in two sizes, Narrow Fit (47 mm) and Wide Fit (52 mm), with swappable nose pads. Snap recommends a virtual try-on using a supported iPhone to check fit before you buy. The two sizes differ by only 4 grams in Snap’s listed weights, so fit and comfort are the more important distinction.

Prescription wearers

Snap says removable prescription inserts and add-on prescription lenses are available through partners. The partner names, prices, and which prescriptions are supported were not stated in the materials Snap published with its announcements, so ask Snap directly before assuming your prescription can be accommodated.

Connectivity options

Option What Snap says Named partner and plan detail
Wi-Fi Standard connectivity described on the product page. No carrier needed.
Wi-Fi + Cellular Uses a 5G-capable charging case. Verizon in the U.S.; Orange in France; EE in the UK. Plan pricing is not yet stated and Snap says details are forthcoming.

Streaming cable

A magnetic 5-pin connection accepts either the charging cable or a USB-C streaming cable. The streaming cable can connect the glasses to a PC, phone, or gaming console to drive a larger display. Snap’s standalone positioning does not depend on this cable; it is an optional mode.

Warranty, shipping, and returns

The product page lists free shipping, free returns, and a one-year limited warranty. Those terms are listed on the page as of this writing, so confirm them at checkout.

Privacy controls Snap describes

SPECS has an LED recording indicator, and Snap says the glasses prompt the wearer before accessing sensitive information. The company emphasizes on-device processing and says users can control how information is stored, synced, shared, and deleted. Snap’s CEO, Evan Spiegel, put it this way in the launch materials: “SPECS only work if people trust them,” he said. “Privacy has to be built in from the very beginning.” Those are Snap’s stated controls. We have not reviewed an independent privacy audit of the device.

Where the claims stop

Read Snap’s material as a list of what the company intends SPECS to do and how it measures the hardware. The product is priced as a premium device, is preorder-only at the time of writing, and its public evidence is company-authored. Before buying, check three things directly with Snap: the fit of your frame size, whether a prescription insert is available for your lenses, and whether the Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular option and its plan pricing suit your location.

In Snap’s words, the glasses are “not designed to replace the world,” as Spiegel said at launch; “They’re designed to bring computing into it.” Whether they do that in practice is a question the company’s own specifications cannot settle on their own.
