There is no single generator or battery size that fits every home. Choose based on the appliances you need to run at the same time: a generator must meet their running demand and handle motor startup surges, while a battery backup must have enough output power for the active loads and enough stored energy for the time you need them.
Start with the appliances you need to keep running
Make a list of essential appliances and devices, then decide which must operate simultaneously. Check each item’s data plate or manual for its power demand and, for equipment with a motor, its starting watts. Use manufacturer specifications rather than a generic “typical home” estimate: the right capacity depends on your particular loads and how you plan to use them.

If a specification gives current in amps, watts equal volts multiplied by amps. That calculation alone may not establish an appliance’s actual consumption or startup demand; consult the manual, manufacturer, or a qualified electrical professional if the ratings are unclear.

- Choose the loads. List the appliances and devices you want the generator to power together.
- Find running and starting ratings. Read product data plates or manuals. Starting watts are the extra short-duration power a motor-driven product may need to start; Briggs & Stratton advises checking the product manual or data plate for those figures: Choosing a Portable Generator.
- Add the simultaneous running loads. Total the running watts of the equipment you expect to operate together.
- Account for startup demand. A motor may draw more power to start than to keep running. Government of Ontario guidance says, “For motors, use at least four times the operating watts to determine the start-up watts,” in its on-farm generator context. The same guidance notes that startup demand varies widely, so treat this as contextual guidance—not a universal household-appliance multiplier: On-farm generators for emergency use.
- Compare the load with both generator ratings. The generator’s rated or continuous output must support the planned running load, and its starting output must handle relevant startup demand. Select from your actual load list; a household label or an arbitrary margin cannot replace those specifications.
For example, if a refrigerator and other equipment will run at once, use the ratings for those specific devices and account for the refrigerator’s motor starting demand. Without those appliance ratings and the generator’s output specifications, there is no reliable wattage figure to give for that combination.

How to size a battery backup or power station
Battery systems have two different capacity questions: whether they can deliver enough power at once, and whether they store enough energy to run your equipment for the desired duration. The U.S. Department of Energy distinguishes power capacity, measured in kW or MW, from energy capacity, measured in kWh or MWh: Solar Integration: Solar Energy and Storage Basics.
- Check output power. Compare the unit’s output rating with the combined demand of devices you will run simultaneously, including any startup demand their specifications identify.
- Check energy capacity. Compare the stored energy with the energy your selected loads need over the intended period. A large output rating does not, by itself, mean long runtime.
- Consider recharging. If you expect an outage to continue, check whether solar input or another charging source will be available and whether the specific unit supports it.
- Verify the connection method. Do not assume a portable battery station can power a whole home or a high-draw appliance. Its rated output, capacity, and approved connection method must support the intended use.
Runtime depends on the actual load and available energy. The cited guidance does not establish a universal number of hours for consumer power stations, so avoid relying on a general runtime promise; use the particular unit’s specifications and the loads you plan to connect.

EPA’s outage guidance discusses portable generators and battery-powered or solar power stations for backup uses: Power Outages and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). The choice depends on the loads you need to serve, how you can replenish energy, and the safe connection available—not a universal ranking by runtime, cost, or maintenance.

Portable fuel-powered generators produce exhaust that can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. EPA says to use them outdoors and far from buildings. Government of Canada preparedness guidance specifies at least 6 m (20 feet) from homes or buildings, with exhaust directed away from openings. That distance is Canadian government guidance, not a statement of the rule in every jurisdiction. Follow local requirements and the generator manufacturer’s instructions.

- Never operate a portable fuel generator inside a home or garage, on a balcony, or near doors, vents, or windows.
- Keep working carbon monoxide alarms in the home. The CDC preparedness checklist also calls for battery-backed smoke alarms and CO detectors.
- If using cords, use properly rated outdoor extension cords. CDC’s checklist specifies outdoor-rated cords at least 20 feet long.
- Keep enough appropriate fuel available and follow the manufacturer’s operating and storage instructions.

Do not improvise a connection that feeds a generator into household wiring. Government of Canada guidance says a backup generator may connect to home wiring only through an approved transfer panel and switch installed by a qualified electrician. American Red Cross guidance likewise recommends an electrician install a transfer switch for a permanent connection: Generator Safety | Generator Safety Tips.
