ENERGY STAR’s portable-unit guidance gives capacity ranges rather than one universal size: for spaces under 2,000 square feet, it recommends 20–30 pints per day for slightly to moderately damp conditions, 25–40 for very damp conditions, and 30–50 for wet conditions. The right point within a range depends on your moisture load and the unit’s current rating.
Dehumidifier sizing chart by room area and dampness
Start with the space’s floor area, then match its condition before dehumidification to the signs below. ENERGY STAR’s chart is for portable dehumidifiers; it treats spaces under 2,000 square feet as small to medium and spaces over 2,000 square feet as large.

These ranges come from ENERGY STAR’s consumer buying guidance. The dampness bands overlap, so use the visible signs and moisture sources to decide where your space fits rather than treating the ranges as a precise formula. ENERGY STAR generally advises choosing a unit that is somewhat oversized rather than undersized. If replacing a dehumidifier, how much water the old unit collects in a day can also help you judge the need.
How to choose within the recommended range
- Use the lower end when the room is only mildly damp and has no persistent wet spots or added moisture source.
- Favor the upper end when dampness is persistent, the space is near the top of its area category, or laundry drying adds moisture.
- For a wet basement, address the source too. A larger appliance can remove more airborne moisture, but it does not fix seepage. ENERGY STAR notes that improving drainage around the foundation may reduce basement humidity.
If you do not know the relative humidity, the chart’s descriptions still provide a practical starting point. The exact capacity for a specific room cannot be determined from area alone: dampness, moisture added to the room, and the conditions under which capacity is rated all matter.

What “pints per day” means—and why old labels can mislead
Capacity is usually stated as pints of water removed in 24 hours. It is measured under defined test conditions, so it is a standardized comparison, not a promise that the appliance will collect that exact amount in your basement.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s revised portable-dehumidifier test procedure uses 65°F rather than the earlier 80°F method. ENERGY STAR explains that cooler air contains less water to remove, so the revised test can produce lower reported capacity figures. As a result, a current model’s pint rating may look lower than an older model’s even when the numbers are based on comparable products. ENERGY STAR provides only a rough correlation between old and new ratings, and says actual changes vary by model; do not compare the labels as though the test basis stayed the same. What to compare after capacity
Efficiency
Look for Integrated Energy Factor (IEF), expressed as liters removed per kilowatt-hour. A higher IEF indicates greater efficiency. ENERGY STAR says certified products use 20% less energy than similarly sized conventional units. Its Version 6.0 efficiency criteria took effect October 1, 2025, so check current certification and the product’s IEF rather than relying on a generic efficiency claim. Drainage
Portable units commonly collect water in a removable bucket, with an indicator and automatic shutoff when it is full. If you want continuous drainage, check the specific model’s manual before buying a hose: hose support and setup are model-specific.

Humidistat and operating guidance
ENERGY STAR-certified models include a built-in humidistat, which lets you set a target relative humidity. Also check the manufacturer’s operating guidance, especially if the basement is cool, and make sure you are comparing current capacity ratings rather than older labels.

A portable dehumidifier is intended for one room or space and can be moved. For humidity that remains above 55% throughout a relatively well-sealed home in a humid climate with central air, ENERGY STAR says a whole-home ducted dehumidifier may be appropriate. These systems are a separate option from room units; they can cost more and should be correctly sized and installed by a professional.

Persistent seepage or wet surfaces call for investigating water entry and drainage as well as choosing equipment. Dehumidifier capacity addresses moisture in the air, not the underlying source of water.
