For a typical two- to three-day weekend, compare coolers in the 45–65-quart range. That is a starting point, not a universal answer: guidance varies with group size, how much food and drink you bring, and whether the cooler needs to hold ice as well.

How much cooler capacity do you need?

Published recommendations overlap, but they are not identical. YETI recommends 45–65 quarts for a two- to three-day weekend adventure; Coleman suggests 40–50 quarts for two people and 50–60 quarts for a small group; Bass Pro Shops recommends 50–60 quarts for two to three people on a weekend camping trip.

Trip and group Suggested capacity Guidance from
Two people on a weekend 40–50 quarts Coleman
Small group on a weekend 50–60 quarts Coleman
Two to three people camping on a weekend 50–60 quarts Bass Pro Shops
Two- to three-day weekend adventure 45–65 quarts YETI

These are sizing recommendations from manufacturers and a retailer, not independently tested standards. For two people packing lightly, the lower end may be enough. Move toward the upper end if you are carrying extra meals or drinks, or consider separate coolers for food and beverages. That is a practical planning choice, not a tested rule.

What changes the size you need?

People and trip length

More travelers and more days usually mean more food and drink to keep cold. Start with the group-size ranges above, then account for the actual number of meals and beverages you plan to pack.

Ice and usable space

A passive cooler must hold both its contents and its cooling medium, so its full labeled capacity is not all available for food and drinks. Stanley notes that ice, container shapes, and food storage affect packing space. Coleman suggests pre-chilling the cooler before loading and gives a 2:1 ice-to-contents ratio as a general packing guide; neither suggestion guarantees a particular number of cold days.

Passive or powered cooling

A passive cooler relies on ice or ice packs, which take up space and may need replenishing. A powered cooler can use its stated volume for food and drinks without reserving room for ice, but it depends on access to power. Dometic illustrates how a smaller powered cooler may serve a multiday trip that would otherwise call for a larger passive one; that is a manufacturer example, not a universal size conversion.

Moving a loaded cooler

Capacity alone does not tell you whether a cooler will be practical to transport. Check the particular model’s dimensions and empty weight, and consider the distance and terrain over which you will move it when full. The sizing guidance above does not provide comparable loaded-weight figures across models.

How to choose between sizes

  1. Estimate the load. List the people, trip days, meals, and drinks you need to keep cold.
  2. Choose the relevant starting range. Use the closest group-size recommendation in the table, rather than treating one figure as right for every weekend.
  3. Account for the cooling method. Leave room for ice in a passive cooler; for a powered cooler, check its power requirements and available volume.
  4. Check the packed layout. Consider containers and how they fit alongside ice or ice packs; the nominal capacity does not guarantee that your specific load will fit.
  5. Verify portability. Compare the selected model’s dimensions and empty weight with how you will transport and handle it.
