For most applications that need a web page’s meaning, extract the relevant content and preserve the structure the task depends on before sending it to an LLM. Raw HTML can mix article text with navigation, headers, footers, sidebars, and other page scaffolding. But converting everything to Markdown is not a universal fix: choose HTML, structured text, Markdown, or plain text according to the model and workload, then check what the conversion kept and lost.
Why raw HTML can be the wrong input
A fetched page may contain its main text alongside menus, repeated site elements, and other material irrelevant to a question-answering or summarization task. Passing all of it through can make the model process noise and spend attention or context on content the task does not need. The goal is not simply to make the input shorter; it is to remove irrelevant material without discarding useful meaning.

Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise documentation says that search and RAG data quality can be improved by excluding boilerplate such as navigation menus, headers, footers, and sidebars. Its parser supports configurable exclusions, illustrating that cleanup can happen during parsing rather than through a blanket conversion rule. Google Cloud parser documentation.

Choose a representation for the task
There are three practical approaches: give HTML to an HTML-capable tool, parse it into structured text or JSON, or extract the relevant content and serialize it as Markdown or plain text. Compare them on coverage, unwanted boilerplate, preservation of tables and code, output stability, token use, latency, cost, JavaScript rendering needs, and whether the data can stay in your environment.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Approach | When it can fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HTML-aware extraction or parsing | When the tool can interpret HTML or identify document elements directly | Whether exclusions work as intended and headings, tables, links, and code survive |
| Structured text or JSON | When downstream code needs predictable fields or element types | Whether the schema captures relationships and content the task needs |
| Markdown or plain text | When a compact, readable text representation fits the model and workflow | Whether conversion preserves meaningful structure without adding noise or losing details |
Markdown can make headings, lists, and links recognizable, but it should be treated as an option rather than a default requirement. Meta’s Llama 3 technical report says Markdown markers hurt performance in its web-pretraining pipeline, for a model primarily trained on web data. That finding is specific to the report’s training setup; it does not establish that Markdown is inferior for every inference task. Llama 3 technical report.
Some tools can work with HTML directly or parse document elements without requiring Markdown conversion. The Lightfeed extractor documents HTML extraction with an option to focus on main content, while Google Cloud’s parser documentation describes parsing document structures such as headings, lists, tables, and text blocks.

Check whether the page content is present
Before choosing an extraction method, inspect the response you actually fetched. A JavaScript-heavy page may deliver an initial HTML response that does not yet contain the text visible in a browser. If the intended content is missing, render the page in a browser and verify that the final DOM contains the text before extracting it.

A workflow for preparing pages
- Define the downstream task. Identify whether the model will answer questions over a page, extract fields, summarize content, or process training data. Those workloads need not use the same representation.
- Confirm the content is available. Check the fetched response; render the page if needed, then verify that the final DOM includes the text to be provided to the model.
- Exclude known boilerplate selectively. Use parser configuration or selectors where possible. Retain headings and their relationships, tables, links, code, captions, or relevant alternative text when the task depends on them.
- Choose the output format. Use Markdown if its structure is helpful for the particular model and task; use plain text or structured output where that fits better. Direct HTML input is also an option when the extractor or model handles it effectively.
- Validate against the source page. Review content coverage, boilerplate leakage, table integrity, code formatting, link context, and token count. Test representative pages, including awkward layouts, rather than relying on one successful example.
- For RAG, extract before chunking when it improves boundaries. Chunk along headings or paragraphs and check that each resulting piece remains understandable on its own. Keep a faithful extracted copy so a later summary does not become the only record.
What extractor research does—and does not—show
A 2026 study by Jeffrey Li and coauthors, “Beyond a Single Extractor,” reports that combining three extractors increased token yield by up to 71% in its DCLM-Baseline setup while maintaining benchmark performance. It also reports extractor-dependent differences of up to 10 percentage points on WikiTQ and 3 percentage points on HumanEval. These are results from the paper’s training-data experiments, not guaranteed improvements for a production RAG pipeline. Study: Beyond a Single Extractor.
Those findings support testing extraction choices rather than assuming that a single tool or format is best. The reported differences concern both retained content and downstream outcomes in the study’s experimental setting; they do not predict how a particular application will perform.

How to interpret published conversion numbers
URLpipe reports results from a comparison on 33 pages: its deterministic rendered-DOM walk achieved 87.2% visible-text coverage and 11.0% leak, while its model-based conversion achieved 79.0% coverage and 22.0% leak. The guide also reports 39 seconds per page and a cost of about $0.0025 for the model-based method in that comparison. These figures are vendor-reported results on that sample, not an independently validated benchmark or a general forecast for other pages, models, or costs. URLpipe guide and comparison.
Measure your own representative pages. A method that retains more visible text may also retain more irrelevant material, while a shorter result may have dropped content needed for the task. Coverage, leakage, structure, and downstream answer quality should be checked together.
