To learn where an ecommerce design process is strong or incomplete, track the shopping journey, check desktop and mobile evidence, and look for the reasoning and proof behind each design decision. The framework below is a practical way to examine 30 portfolios without treating missing evidence as proof that a team did not do the work.
What should an ecommerce website design portfolio include?
A useful portfolio makes it possible to follow a customer’s path from finding a product to completing an order. Record which stages each case study actually shows; do not assume that an attractive homepage represents the whole experience.

- Discovery: homepage, category or collection pages, navigation, and search.
- Product evaluation: product detail page, imagery, variants, availability, shipping information, reviews or other trust cues, specifications, and returns information.
- Purchase: cart, checkout, and order confirmation.
- Devices: desktop and mobile views, where the portfolio provides them.
Baymard describes its library as containing more than 18,000 ecommerce design examples across 74 page types, including desktop, mobile web, and app examples. That scale makes the library useful for locating patterns and page types; it is not a count of portfolios in this review or a requirement that every case study show every possible page. For each portfolio, record the evidence rather than assigning an impressionistic score. These comparison axes are an editorial framework, not a validated universal rubric. A blank or absent example means the portfolio does not demonstrate that point; it does not establish that the design team omitted it from the actual project.
#1 Best Overall
| Review axis | What to record | What a gap may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Journey coverage | Which discovery, product, cart, checkout, and confirmation screens are shown? | The case study may document only a slice of the shopping journey. |
| Device coverage | Are responsive desktop and mobile experiences both visible? | It may be difficult to assess how the experience adapts across devices. |
| Decision quality | Does the case study explain constraints, alternatives considered, and why a design choice was made? | The visuals may be clear while the problem-solving process remains opaque. |
| Commerce detail | Are product information, variants, availability, shipping, returns, cart, and checkout addressed? | The work may leave important purchase questions unanswered in the portfolio evidence. |
| Evidence quality | Are outcomes measured and attributed, or only claimed? Are visual artifacts distinguished from analytics or controlled testing? | A claimed result may lack enough context to judge what supports it. |
| Handoff and iteration | Does the case study show implementation, ongoing testing, or collaboration with the merchant team? | The account may end before showing how the design was delivered or refined. |
Baymard says its benchmark rates 344 ecommerce sites across more than 700 UX elements. This offers context for how broad a usability evaluation can be; it does not mean a portfolio review should reproduce that benchmark or apply identical solutions to every store. Baymard’s ecommerce UX benchmark
What makes a good ecommerce product page?
A portfolio case study should make it possible to assess whether a shopper can understand the product and make a purchase decision. Look for the basics together, not imagery alone: photos, price, variant selection, availability, shipping information, reviews or trust cues, specifications, and returns details. Shopify’s 2026 UX guidance identifies these as product-page information elements. Shopify’s ecommerce UX guidance

Baymard says its product-page research spanned more than two years, encountered more than 1,300 product-page-related usability issues, and distilled its findings into more than 110 guidelines. Those figures describe Baymard’s research, not findings from a review of 30 portfolios. They underline why a portfolio should show how a product page handles concrete shopping questions instead of relying on a hero image to stand in for the whole page. How can you spot checkout and mobile process gaps?
Check whether the work shows when shipping costs become clear, whether guest checkout is available, how manageable the form is, whether mobile navigation is understandable, and whether layouts remain stable as the screen changes. A static mobile mockup may show visual adaptation, but it does not by itself establish that a live flow works well.
Shopify’s 2026 ecommerce UX article reports an average of 23.48 checkout form elements and cites Baymard research for an ideal flow of 12 to 14 elements. These are Shopify’s reported figures and attribution, not measurements of the portfolios reviewed here or a guarantee that a particular form length will suit every checkout. Use them as context when examining form complexity, then inspect what the portfolio actually demonstrates. Shopify’s ecommerce UX guidance

Patterns across the review can help identify where the process needs clearer evidence or stronger coverage. If many case studies stop at the homepage, for example, the portfolio collection may not show how work addresses product selection or checkout. That is a documentation gap in the material you reviewed; it is not, by itself, proof that the underlying projects skipped those stages.

- Repeatedly missing journey stages: make the case-study template prompt for the full path, including cart, checkout, and confirmation.
- Mobile shown without interaction context: document responsive behavior and the navigation or form decisions that matter on smaller screens.
- Design choices without rationale: explain constraints, alternatives, and the reason for the selected approach.
- Results without supporting evidence: separate design artifacts from analytics or controlled testing, and attribute any claimed outcome.
- No visible delivery or iteration: clarify how implementation, testing, and merchant collaboration fit into the work.
External design partnership is one possible operating model, not a universal requirement. In its Faherty case study, Shopify describes Verbal+Visual continuing as a design and optimization partner while Faherty’s internal ecommerce team retained ownership of its roadmap, analytics, and feature prioritization. This is a vendor-published case study illustrating one arrangement, not evidence that the same structure fits every merchant or team. Shopify’s Faherty case study
