What Should You Do If ChatGPT Gives Harmful or Misleading Advice?

ChatGPT can sound confident and still be wrong. Verify important claims, seek qualified help for consequential health or legal decisions, and contact emergency or crisis support if someone is in immediate danger.

Pause before acting, then verify the claim using reliable sources. ChatGPT can give inaccurate or misleading answers in a confident tone. If the advice could affect your health, legal rights, finances, or safety, check with an appropriately qualified person before making a consequential decision. If someone may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or a crisis helpline—not ChatGPT.

Why ChatGPT’s answer may be wrong

ChatGPT can be useful, but it is not always accurate. OpenAI says it may provide incorrect facts, fabricated quotes, studies or citations, and overconfident answers to ambiguous or complex questions. It may also have outdated knowledge, lack access to relevant sites, oversimplify a complicated issue, or misrepresent scientific consensus. A polished explanation, confident wording, or citation is not proof that an answer is reliable. OpenAI’s guidance is to use ChatGPT as a first draft rather than a final source.

What to do with an ordinary factual claim

  1. Pause and isolate the claim. Identify the specific fact, quote, statistic, or instruction you need to verify. Re-asking ChatGPT to confirm its own answer does not establish that it is true.
  2. Open the cited source yourself. Check that it exists, is relevant and current, and actually supports the statement ChatGPT made. A reference in an answer can itself be inaccurate or fabricated.
  3. Compare important claims with reliable sources. Prefer authoritative primary sources where available, and check the context rather than relying on a snippet or a copied quotation.
  4. Use the answer only after checking it against the stakes. For low-consequence questions, verification may be straightforward. For decisions with significant consequences, seek qualified human advice as well.

When web search is enabled, ChatGPT may provide more current information and citations, but you should still inspect the cited source directly. OpenAI’s explanation of ChatGPT’s reliability recommends checking important information, including quotes, data, technical details, and external references.

If the advice concerns health or legal decisions

Do not treat ChatGPT as a substitute for a clinician or lawyer. For a consequential, non-urgent medical question, check authoritative health information and contact an appropriately qualified clinician before acting on a recommendation. For a legal question, consult reliable primary sources and an appropriately qualified lawyer before making a decision that could affect your rights or obligations. The right source and next step depend on the circumstances and jurisdiction.

If there may be immediate danger

Do not wait for ChatGPT to clarify or correct an unsafe answer. Contact local emergency services or a crisis helpline for real-world help. OpenAI says its Trusted contacts feature is not an emergency service, crisis response system, or substitute for mental health care, and directs people concerned about immediate safety to local emergency services or a crisis helpline. How to report a problematic ChatGPT answer

You can report a conversation through the message that concerns you. OpenAI’s documented route for web and mobile is:

  1. Tap or click the thumbs-down control on the relevant message.
  2. Select “Select an issue,” then choose “Safety or Legal concern.”
  3. Follow the prompts shown in the app.

Interfaces can change, so follow the current prompts in your app. OpenAI also documents separate reporting routes for shared links, conversations with GPTs, GPTs themselves, and other content in its reporting guide.

Reporting is a way to flag content for review, not an urgent help channel or a guarantee of a correction, reply, or particular enforcement action. OpenAI says it uses automated systems and a trained team of experts to review problematic content reports. Its overview of content review does not promise a specific outcome or response time.
