What Should You Actually Look for in a Generative AI Development Company?

Choose a generative AI development partner that can define measurable requirements, explain dependencies, demonstrate evaluation and security practices, and support the system after launch.

Choose a generative AI development company by how well it can turn your use case into measurable requirements, explain its data and model dependencies, show how it tests quality and risk, and support the system after launch. A polished demo or broad claim of AI expertise is not enough: ask for project-specific evidence at every stage.

Start with the problem, not the model

A capable partner should be able to describe the people who will use the system, the task it will perform, the workflow it will change, and the outcome you expect. Ask the company to define acceptance criteria before development begins. Those criteria should make success observable—for example, through agreed quality thresholds or a defined reduction in a particular manual step—rather than relying on a general promise to make work faster.

Ask which parts of the workflow genuinely need generative AI and what the system should do when it cannot produce a reliable answer. The right requirements depend on your application and the consequences of failure; NIST does not provide a universal vendor scorecard. Its AI Risk Management Framework offers voluntary guidance for considering trustworthiness throughout AI design, development, use, and evaluation.

Understand the data, models, and dependencies

Ask for a clear account of what data enters the system, where it comes from, how it is processed, and which foundation models, APIs, libraries, or fine-tuned models the proposed solution uses. For confidential or personal information, establish how it will be handled and protected, and what retention arrangements apply. Ask what intellectual-property risks the company has considered.

Find out what happens if an upstream provider changes a model, its terms, or its service. NIST’s Generative AI Profile (NIST AI 600-1), published July 26, 2024, calls for procurement due diligence that addresses intellectual property, privacy, security, and ongoing third-party risks. It is guidance, not a legal mandate. Request a project-relevant list of suppliers and subprocessors, and clarify what can be documented or reviewed under the contract.

Require evaluation evidence, not just a demo

A demonstration can show that a prototype produces plausible output in selected examples; it does not establish that the integrated system is ready for production. Ask the company to propose representative test cases for your actual use, including edge cases, and to explain how it will measure quality and identify inaccurate or unsafe output.

Examine secure development practices

Ask how the company handles secure design and implementation, software dependencies, vulnerability reporting, testing, and changes over the system’s lifecycle. Make the discussion specific to the proposed architecture rather than accepting a generic statement that development is secure.

NIST SP 800-218A: Secure Software Development Practices for Generative AI and Dual-Use Foundation Models, published July 26, 2024, adds AI-specific practices to the Secure Software Development Framework. NIST says it is intended to be useful to model producers, system producers, and acquirers. You can use it to make security questions more concrete, then tailor the requirements to your project.

Compare providers on the same requirements

If you have multiple credible candidates, give each the same use case and compare their answers against requirements that matter to your project. The following are practical comparison axes, not an official NIST ranking or standardized weighting:

  • Evidence of delivery in a setting comparable to yours.
  • Clarity of the proposed architecture, data flows, models, and dependencies.
  • Specificity of the evaluation and testing plan, including how limitations will be surfaced.
  • Data-handling and security controls, plus the way third-party risks are assessed.
  • Operational support, incident ownership, and plans for upstream service changes or outages.
  • Transparency about scope, documentation, responsibilities, and contractual review rights.

Give greater weight to the controls and support that match your data sensitivity and the potential consequences of failure. A provider’s reference to a framework is useful only insofar as it can explain the practices it will apply to your system.

Ask these questions in discovery or an RFP

  1. Which user problem and measurable outcome are we designing for, and how will acceptance be decided?
  2. Which models, data sources, APIs, libraries, and subprocessors will the system rely on?
  3. How will confidential or personal data be handled, retained, and protected, and what intellectual-property risks have you assessed?
  4. What representative evaluation set and failure criteria will you use before launch? Can we review the results and known limitations?
  5. How will you test the integrated system, manage vulnerabilities, and respond to upstream model changes?
  6. What will be monitored after launch, who owns incidents, and what happens if a third-party model or service becomes unavailable?
  7. What records and documentation will we receive, and what contractual rights will let us review relevant provider processes?

Use frameworks as prompts, not proof

NIST describes the AI Risk Management Framework as voluntary guidance for incorporating trustworthiness into AI design, development, use, and evaluation. The NIST overview says AI RMF 1.0 is being revised, so confirm which edition and practices a prospective provider currently follows. The Generative AI Profile, NIST AI 600-1, was released July 26, 2024.

A framework reference is not a certification, proof of legal compliance, or evidence that a particular company will deliver successfully. Ask the company to connect any stated framework practices to the proposed design, evaluation, security controls, and operating responsibilities. The right requirements also depend on the application, jurisdiction, data, and contract; NIST’s guidance is cross-sectoral, not legal advice or a substitute for sector-specific procurement requirements.
