These films and series are worth choosing for different reasons: some satirize startup life, some dramatize computing history, and others explore hacking, privacy, or technology’s social effects. Treat them as entertainment and conversation starters—not as technical training or neutral records of real events.
For startup culture and software-industry satire
Silicon Valley
This comedy follows programmers trying to turn a software idea into a company. Its startup premise gives it room to poke at ambition, investment, competition, and the gap between building a product and building a business. TIME’s 2014 review describes the series’ compression-algorithm premise and startup arc, while a curated engineering-media catalog groups it with startups, satire, comedy, and the tech industry. TIME’s review and the EngineeringKiosk catalog offer context for those descriptions. It is satire, not a neutral account of how every startup or engineering team works.

For the personal-computer era
Halt and Catch Fire
This fictional drama is set during the rise of personal computing in the 1980s. Its first-season plot involves an effort to reverse engineer an IBM PC, but AMC explicitly describes that story as fictional; it should not be mistaken for a factual account of the historical events or people behind personal computing. The Television Academy’s feature adds context about the series’ setting and characters, including programmer Cameron Howe and Donna Clark, who is also a programmer in her own right. Read the Television Academy feature for that character and period context, and AMC’s announcement about the first season for the fictional premise.
For cybersecurity and hacking themes
Mr. Robot
The series follows a programmer who becomes a vigilante hacker, using a dramatic story to explore cybersecurity and hacking. It can spark interest in security, but it is not a lab manual, a step-by-step guide, or a complete picture of professional security work. GovTech Singapore includes the series in a technology-themed viewing guide, and Universal’s synopsis describes its central character as a programmer turned vigilante hacker. See GovTech Singapore’s viewing guide and Universal Pictures At Home’s series page.

For data, social media, and their effects
The Great Hack and The Social Dilemma
These are useful choices if you want to discuss data use and social media’s effects on democracy and everyday life. GovTech Singapore’s guide describes The Great Hack as a docu-drama and The Social Dilemma as a documentary. Those formats matter: watch each as a work making an argument, not as a substitute for examining evidence about a particular platform or event. The same guide provides its technology-and-society framing for both titles: GovTech Singapore’s guide.
For speculative technology and ethics
Black Mirror and Westworld
Both offer fictional scenarios to prompt discussion about technology and its consequences. Black Mirror works as a speculative anthology, while Westworld gives questions about AI and sentience a continuing dramatic setting. GovTech Singapore groups these titles with themes including ethics, future technology, and predictive decisions. Their imagined futures are prompts for thought, not forecasts of what technology will inevitably do. GovTech Singapore’s guide outlines those themes.

For workplace comedy
The IT Crowd
If you want comedy rather than a serious account of computing, this series centers on two computer experts and their workplace. The EngineeringKiosk catalog describes it as workplace comedy, making it a lighter pick for viewers interested in the social side of IT work rather than technical instruction. The catalog entry provides that description.
