Enterprises should choose an AI agent platform that can identify each agent, restrict its access to approved data and tools, enforce policy while it runs, and provide an auditable record of its actions. The right requirements depend on the agent’s autonomy and the consequences of an error: use a risk-based checklist, verify vendor claims, and test the intended workflow before deployment.
Set the risk boundary before comparing platforms
Start with the job the agent will do, the systems it may touch, and what could happen if it acts incorrectly. A read-only research assistant and an agent that can change records or trigger transactions do not present the same approval and control needs. Define the permitted actions, prohibited actions, data boundaries, and conditions that require a person to review or approve an action.

Use those limits to set acceptance criteria for the specific use case. Avoid treating a general claim such as “secure” or “enterprise-ready” as a substitute for showing how the platform enforces your requirements.

Compare platforms against controls you can verify
| Evaluation area | What to establish | Evidence to request or test |
|---|---|---|
| Agent identity and authority | How each agent is identified; whether it acts as itself, for a user, or under another authority; how permissions are granted, scoped, and revoked. | Trace an agent action to its identity and authority. Check that access can be limited and withdrawn. NIST’s announcement on agent identity and authority and the NCCoE project hub describe agent-specific considerations including identification, authorization, auditing, non-repudiation, and prompt-injection mitigation. |
| Least-privilege access to data and tools | Which data sources, tools, and operations an agent can use, and whether those permissions can be narrowed to the use case. | Inspect the configured access and test attempts to use an unapproved tool or reach out-of-scope data. Confirm how permissions are managed when an agent’s owner, purpose, or status changes. |
| Runtime policy and human approval | Whether policy can constrain actions while the agent is running, and whether designated actions can be paused for human review. | Demonstrate a policy blocking a prohibited action and a human approval step for an action your organization considers consequential. The OWASP Agent Control Standard describes middleware hooks and declarative controls intended to support portable controls across agent frameworks. |
| Observability and auditability | Whether reviewers can see what the agent accessed, what actions it took, and enough context to investigate an incident or explain a decision. | Ask for a sample trace and audit record, then verify that the record identifies the agent and its actions. Establish what evidence is available to your team and how it can be retained under your requirements. |
| Interoperability and integration security | Which protocols and enterprise systems the platform supports, and how identity, permissions, and third-party tool access work across those connections. | Test a representative integration and check how permissions propagate and how connected tools are governed. NIST’s AI Agent Standards Initiative identifies interoperable protocols, agent security, and identity as areas for trusted adoption. |
| Lifecycle and fleet governance | How agents are discovered, assigned owners, versioned, governed by policy, monitored, and audited over time. | Ask the vendor to show how an administrator can find and review agents across the environment, identify an owner, and inspect their status and controls. Google Cloud’s documentation illustrates one vendor’s description of agent registry visibility, identity and access, security, and audit capabilities; it is not independent validation. |
| Testable security requirements | Whether the platform’s controls can be assessed against requirements that cover the AI lifecycle and agent orchestration. | Translate relevant requirements into assessment questions and acceptance tests. OWASP AISVS 1.0 is a vendor-neutral catalogue of testable AI security requirements; it can inform procurement and assessment, but it is not a certification or vendor ranking. |
Turn the checklist into a vendor assessment
Ask vendors to answer the same questions for the same use case. Request a demonstration in your intended configuration rather than relying only on a feature list or presentation.

An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.
- How is the agent identified, and whose authority does it use for each action?
- Can we restrict the agent to specific data, tools, and operations, and revoke that access?
- Can we inspect what the agent accessed and did, and export the records needed for our audit process?
- Which policies are enforced at runtime, and can we require human approval for selected actions?
- Which protocols and enterprise systems are supported, and how are connected tools and propagated permissions controlled?
- How are agents registered, assigned owners, versioned, monitored, and retired?
- What evidence can we use to verify each security claim against our requirements?
Record gaps as unresolved requirements, not as assumed capabilities. Compare the effort to configure and operate the platform for your use case alongside reliability, service terms, data handling, deployment fit, and total cost; these need to be assessed directly with each vendor.
Validate the fit with a controlled pilot
Before expanding access or autonomy, run a pilot against representative tasks and the controls that matter for the intended deployment. Use a bounded environment and test both normal workflows and cases where the agent should stop, ask for approval, or be denied access.

- Define pass/fail criteria. Specify which actions are allowed, which are prohibited, what requires approval, and what logs or evidence must be available.
- Test permissions and policy. Verify the agent can complete authorized work and is blocked from out-of-scope data, tools, or operations.
- Review traces and records. Confirm that reviewers can reconstruct the relevant actions and identify the agent and authority involved.
- Exercise integrations. Test the actual systems and protocols in scope, including the handling of permissions and third-party tools.
- Decide whether to proceed. Resolve material gaps before increasing the agent’s access or autonomy; do not treat a successful demonstration as proof that every deployment configuration is safe.
Use frameworks to organize evaluation, not replace it
The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary and intended to help incorporate trustworthiness considerations into AI design, development, use, and evaluation. It can help structure an organization’s risk discussion, but alignment with a framework alone does not establish that a product or deployment is safe. Apply the organization’s risk tolerance to each use case and retain product-specific acceptance tests.
What a platform comparison can—and cannot—tell you
A shortlist should make it possible to compare identity and authorization, least-privilege access, runtime controls, observability, interoperability, lifecycle governance, and the evidence available to verify claims. The sources cited here provide evaluation frameworks and one vendor’s account of its own governance features; they do not establish comparative vendor performance, pricing, implementation effort, or a universally best platform. Confirm current capabilities and contractual terms, including data residency, retention, and service terms, directly during procurement.
