Before a humanoid robot works near employees, define the exact task and conditions, assess the complete robot application—including non-routine work—with affected workers, and verify safeguards for the risks identified. Then establish safe operating, access, maintenance, training, and change-management procedures. A humanoid shape alone does not establish that a system is safe, certified, or covered by a particular standard.
Assess the complete application, not just the robot
A robot’s safety depends on how the whole system is designed and used. OSHA describes an industrial robot system as including the robot, its end-effector or tool, control system and programs, power sources, sensors, and sequencing or monitoring interfaces. The workpiece, nearby equipment, layout, and people’s activities also matter to the application risk assessment.

Document the proposed task and operating conditions: what the robot will handle, its work envelope, operating modes, speed and force settings, tools or grippers, and who may enter the area. Include the people who operate, supervise, clean, service, or work near the system. A safety assessment should identify hazards, who may be exposed and how, the resulting risks, and measures to control those risks before commissioning.
Decide what kind of human–robot interaction is actually needed
Do not assume that every task requires people and a robot to occupy the same space or make contact. OSHA identifies questions such as whether workers must share a workstation, handle the same workpiece while the robot is moving, or be in physical contact with the robot or its tool. The answers help determine whether shared-space operation is necessary and what risks must be addressed.

| Proposed arrangement | Question to resolve | What the assessment must address |
|---|---|---|
| People and robot work in separate areas or at separate times | Can access to the robot’s working area be prevented during automatic operation? | Area boundaries, access control, and safe procedures for entering the work area. |
| People and robot use the same workstation at different times | How is the changeover managed, and what prevents an unexpected restart while a person is present? | Entry and exit procedures, mode changes, protective stops, and restart control. |
| People handle the same workpiece while the robot moves | Which movements or tasks bring people into the robot’s operating space? | Exposure during each task, protective measures, and the consequences of unintended movement. |
| People may touch or work in physical contact with the robot or tool | What contact is possible, including trapping against a fixed object? | Impact and pinching hazards, robot and tool behavior, and the suitability of safeguards for this application. |
These are assessment prompts, not a universal classification or a recipe for safe collaboration. The actual operating conditions determine what controls are appropriate.
Include setup, recovery, and maintenance—not only normal production
People may be exposed to hazards when the robot is not performing its ordinary production cycle. Assess startup and shutdown, teaching or programming, testing, adjustment, clearing faults, maintenance, and recovery after an unexpected stop. These activities can require entry into the working envelope, where unintended movement could cause injury.

Consider both transient contact, such as a brief impact, and quasi-static contact, in which a person is pinched or trapped between the robot or tool and a fixed object. A task that appears controlled during normal operation can present a different risk when a worker is diagnosing a fault or reaching into the work area.

Select and verify safeguards for the identified risks
Choose engineering safeguards based on the assessment; no single device or safeguard makes every humanoid application safe. Measures OSHA discusses for robot applications include presence-sensing interlocked coverings, protective stops, clear space boundaries, and controls over access. Evaluate robot safety functions and sensing alongside guards, tools, layout, and how the system responds to people entering or approaching the work area.

Procedures should cover safe entry and exit, lockout/tagout where applicable, restarting, emergency response, and maintenance. Signs and training can support those controls, but should not substitute for suitable engineering measures. Validate the safeguards under the actual operating conditions, including foreseeable non-routine tasks and possible pinching or trapping points.
Check standards against the robot’s use and location
The applicable standards depend on the system’s intended use, industrial classification, and jurisdiction; humanoid appearance by itself does not settle those questions. OSHA’s robotics standards page lists ANSI/RIA R15.06, ISO 10218-1 and ISO 10218-2 for industrial robot manufacture and integration, and ISO/TS 15066 for collaborative robot safety. OSHA also says that consensus standards are guidance from their originating organizations, not OSHA regulations, and cautions that ISO 10218 does not apply to non-industrial robots, although its safety principles may be useful.

Confirm the current edition and applicability for the actual system and worksite with competent safety and legal professionals. Do not assume that an industrial or collaborative robot standard automatically covers a non-industrial humanoid, or that a vendor’s use of a standards label proves the complete application complies with local requirements.
Prepare workers and manage changes to the work
Robot deployment can change more than the task sequence. NIOSH identifies unexpected contact, distraction, and mental stress—including distrust and concerns about job loss—as emerging risks when robots operate near people. EU-OSHA recommends considering the wider work system, involving workers in change management, and providing training for new responsibilities and skill needs.

Involve affected workers in identifying hazards and reviewing whether the proposed safeguards and procedures work in practice. Explain what the robot will do, how people should respond to a stop or fault, and who is responsible for supervision and maintenance. Reassess when the task, program, end-effector, layout, robot behavior, or work organization changes; a prior assessment may no longer describe the changed application.
Make supplier evidence and commissioning part of the decision
Ask the supplier and integrator for safety documentation relevant to the exact task and operating conditions—not only general product descriptions. The employer remains responsible for ensuring safe design and implementation. OSHA describes verification during site acceptance, so acceptance should check that the installed system and safeguards perform as intended in the work environment.
- Define the use: record the task, workpiece, operating modes, work envelope, tools, people’s roles, and conditions in which access is required.
- Review the assessment: check that production and non-routine activities, exposure paths, contact hazards, and proposed protective measures are addressed for the complete application.
- Confirm controls and procedures: verify safeguards, access arrangements, stop and restart behavior, lockout/tagout procedures where applicable, emergency response, and worker training.
- Verify at acceptance: evaluate the installed system and its safeguards in the intended work setting before routine operation.
- Keep the assessment current: review it after relevant changes to the task, programming, tool, layout, behavior, or work organization.
For a comparison between deployment options, weigh task fit, how often and how closely workers are exposed, whether shared-space work or contact is required, available and validated safety functions, tool hazards, maintenance and recovery needs, integration effort, worker training, standards applicability, and evidence for the precise operating conditions. The available evidence does not support a humanoid-vendor ranking or comparison of costs, productivity, or injury rates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInterpret robot-injury statistics carefully
A NIOSH overview cites Layne’s 2023 analysis, “Robot-related fatalities at work in the United States, 1992–2017,” which identified 41 robot-related fatalities in the United States over that period. The count concerns robots overall: it is not a humanoid-specific figure and does not measure risk per robot or per worker. The sources considered here do not establish a humanoid-specific injury rate or the safety performance, certification, or validated operating limits of any particular humanoid model.
