A response that says “success” may mean only that the request was queued—not that the post went live or reached every destination.
Why can a publishing job say “success” before anything is published?
Because acceptance, execution, and delivery are separate events. An HTTP success response—or a 202 Accepted—can confirm that a service took responsibility for processing a request. It does not, by itself, prove that an asynchronous job finished or that an external destination published the content.

Salesforce documents this distinction for its event API: success: true means the publish request was queued for asynchronous publication. FoPost likewise says its 202 response indicates acceptance, not that a post is live. These are examples of provider-specific behavior, not universal definitions. See Salesforce’s event-publishing documentation and FoPost’s webhook documentation.

- Accepted or queued: The service has taken responsibility for processing the request.
- Running: Processing is underway, if the service exposes this state.
- Completed: The job’s defined work reached a terminal state. Document whether that means an internal operation finished or a destination confirmed publication.
- Published or delivered: A destination-specific outcome. Use these words only when the system can support that claim, and explain what confirmation means.
- Failed, canceled, or partial: Explicit terminal outcomes, with per-destination results when one request fans out to several accounts or channels.
A queue acknowledgment should never be presented as proof of destination delivery. PubNub makes that boundary explicit for its own service: “a successful publish confirms that PubNub accepted the message, not that any particular client received it.” Read PubNub’s publishing documentation.
What should an API receipt include?
A useful receipt is a durable record of one operation, not merely a transient response. The exact field names and guarantees depend on the API, but a provider-neutral design can include:
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
job_id or operation_id |
A stable handle for looking up the operation and its current state. |
status |
A documented state such as queued, running, completed, failed, canceled, or partial, with clear transition meanings. |
accepted_at and, when relevant, completed_at |
Timestamps whose meanings are defined. Acceptance time and completion time are not interchangeable. |
request_id or correlation identifier |
A value for tracing and support. It helps connect logs but should not replace the operation identifier. |
targets[] |
Per-destination status and any provider reference when one request publishes to multiple destinations. |
error |
A stable error code and an actionable explanation when processing fails. |
status_url or equivalent read operation |
An authenticated path to inspect the authoritative record later. |
| Callback metadata | A stable event identifier plus documented signature verification, retry behavior, and deduplication guidance. |
This is a design checklist, not a schema prescribed by the cited providers. Use the selected provider’s documentation for its actual states, retention, retry schedule, and delivery guarantees.

Do not assume every identifier serves the same purpose. Salesforce notes that its returned event Id is not included in the delivered event and is not always unique; its ReplayId identifies a position in the event stream. For an operation receipt, the identifier should let the caller find the authoritative job or resource, rather than merely identify a notification or stream position.
Should clients poll, use webhooks, or do both?
Polling gives a client a direct way to inspect current state. Webhooks can make state changes visible sooner without repeated status requests. For many asynchronous workflows, using callbacks for notification and a queryable operation record for recovery is more robust than relying on either mechanism alone.
| Approach | Strength | Failure to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Polling only | The client can check the operation record on its own schedule. | Frequent checks add request load and may increase the time before a change is noticed; rate limits and polling cost matter. |
| Webhook plus query | A callback can announce a transition, while the read path remains available to verify current state or recover after a missed callback. | Callbacks can be delayed, duplicated, rejected, or missed during downtime; signature verification and reconciliation are needed. |
Keep the operation record or delivery history authoritative. A callback is a notification about a transition, not an unquestionable substitute for reading current state. The caller should be able to reconcile when a callback does not arrive.

Retry and retention policies are provider-specific. For example, Supabase documents that its webhook endpoint must return a 2xx response within 20 seconds to count as successful, uses five automatic attempts for failed deliveries, and retains delivery history for 14 days. Those figures describe Supabase’s platform webhooks, not a general webhook standard; consult Supabase’s current documentation for the exact policy.

How should a client handle retries and duplicate callbacks?
Assume that a callback may be delivered more than once. A retry can happen after the receiver processed an event but before the sender received confirmation. If processing the repeated event triggers another publish, charge, or other side effect, the duplicate can cause real damage.
- Verify the callback’s signature or other documented authenticity mechanism before acting on it.
- Store a stable callback event identifier, or another documented deduplication key, and record whether it has already been processed.
- Make the handler idempotent: processing the same logical event again should not repeat its side effect.
- Use the operation read path to reconcile state if the callback is missing, delayed, or ambiguous.
Postmark recommends storing a stable identifier such as MessageID or its retry trace ID to avoid repeating work when webhook events are retried. Supabase describes its webhook delivery as at-least-once. These examples support duplicate-safe handling; they do not establish exactly-once execution across an API, a network, and an external publishing destination. See Postmark’s webhook overview and Supabase’s webhook documentation.

An idempotency key and an event identifier solve related but different problems. A caller-provided idempotency key can let an API recognize retries of the same logical request, if that API supports the feature. A stable event ID helps a receiver detect repeated delivery of a notification. Do not assume one mechanism exists just because the other does.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if a callback never arrives or the outcome is unclear?
Use a recovery path that does not depend on receiving every notification:
- Send the publish request with a caller-generated correlation value and retain it for tracing.
- Record the returned operation receipt. If the work is asynchronous, treat its initial status as accepted or queued.
- Read the operation through the authenticated status endpoint, or process a verified callback and then check current state when needed.
- If a callback is absent, inspect the operation record or retained delivery history and reconcile the result.
- If the operation outcome is unknown, do not blindly create a second logical publish. First determine whether the original operation is still running, completed, or failed, and whether the API supports a safe retry with an idempotency key.
Some systems expose recovery features specific to their own event model. PubNub documents replay from persisted history as a recovery strategy for its service. Google Cloud Pub/Sub assigns a message ID and timestamp when it receives a message, and documents at-least-once delivery with best-effort ordering; ordering requires configured keys and has region constraints. These message-broker features help explain event recovery and delivery semantics, but neither defines whether a final publishing destination made content live. See PubNub’s publishing documentation and Google Cloud Pub/Sub’s publisher documentation.

How should a receipt report publishing to multiple destinations?
When one request targets several accounts or channels, a single overall “success” can hide partial failure. Return the outcome for each target alongside an aggregate state that can represent partial completion. For example, one destination might confirm publication while another rejects the post; the receipt should preserve both results rather than flattening them into a misleading all-or-nothing status.
FoPost documents both post-level and per-account delivery events, illustrating why destination-level status matters in fan-out publishing. Follow the API’s current documentation for the exact event and status semantics.
What delivery guarantees do queues and brokers provide?
Queue behavior can help with processing, ordering, and deduplication, but it does not by itself prove that a downstream publishing destination completed the work. The guarantee must be traced through every boundary: API acceptance, queue delivery, worker execution, provider response, and—if required—confirmation at the final destination.
AWS documents deduplication and grouping for SQS FIFO queues, while its FAQ notes that standard queues can deliver a message more than once and that consumers should be idempotent. Google Cloud Pub/Sub documents at-least-once delivery and best-effort ordering. These are service-specific queue and broker semantics, not promises of exactly-once publication. Review AWS’s SQS deduplication guidance and the Amazon SQS FAQ before relying on a particular queue behavior.
When evaluating an API or designing your own, establish who owns the authoritative operation state and what “published” means: accepted by an intermediary, accepted by the destination provider, visible at the destination, or verified by a later read. That boundary determines what the receipt can truthfully claim.
