The metadata server (MDS) handles metadata and control work, including providing layout information; with a usable layout, a client can send file-data requests to one or more data servers (DSs), potentially in parallel. That means metadata performance and data throughput describe different parts of the system—and neither is a substitute for measuring the other.
What each measure describes
Metadata performance
Metadata performance concerns how quickly the system handles operations such as locating files, reading attributes, opening files, and obtaining or maintaining the state and layout needed to access data. These operations depend on the metadata and control path. NFSv4.1 defines the protocol roles, but does not give a universal metadata operations-per-second or latency figure. RFC 5661
Data throughput
Data throughput describes how quickly file contents move during reads and writes. With a pNFS layout, a client can direct data requests to the data servers identified by that layout, potentially using multiple servers in parallel instead of funneling every data operation through one MDS. The layout type determines the arrangement. RFC 5661 RFC 8434
Why the two can diverge
The architecture separates metadata processing from data processing. A system may therefore have a data path capable of moving large files quickly while metadata-heavy work—such as frequent directory, attribute, or open operations—remains constrained by metadata processing. This is an architectural distinction, not a claim that every implementation has the same bottleneck or performance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
pNFS does not provide striped metadata access by clients in NFSv4.1. A server may stripe metadata in its own backend, but that does not make client metadata access equivalent to the parallel data path. RFC 5661
When data I/O may stay on the metadata server
“pNFS data goes directly to data servers” is incomplete. RFC 5661 defines the mdsthreshold attribute, through which a server can advise a client about whether reads and writes should use the MDS or a DS. The advice can include separate file-size and I/O-size thresholds for reads and writes. For an applicable threshold, access below it should be directed to the MDS; when both threshold types are supplied, the standard describes reaching both before sending I/O to a DS. Small files or small individual requests may consequently use the MDS path.

This is server-provided guidance about where access is more efficient, not a universal size cutoff. The RFC does not establish one threshold value that applies to every pNFS system. RFC 5661
Layouts determine the data path
A layout gives the client information it needs to access file data. The NFSv4.1 file layout is one type; pNFS also has other layout specifications. The servers, data protocol, and control communication between the MDS and storage devices depend on the layout type. It is therefore not accurate to assume that every pNFS deployment uses identical data-server arrangements or coordination. RFC 8434

How to evaluate performance claims
Compare systems and benchmarks using measures that match the work in question. The standards define roles and mechanisms, not a universal speed figure or conversion between metadata performance and bandwidth.
- Operation mix: distinguish metadata-heavy work, such as many small files and frequent directory, attribute, or open operations, from large sequential reads and writes.
- I/O destination: identify whether requests are served by the MDS or DSs, and whether
mdsthresholdguidance keeps smaller files or requests on the MDS. - Layout and parallelism: establish which layout type is in use and how many data-server paths it makes available.
- Measurement unit: assess metadata operations or latency separately from bytes per second or aggregate read/write bandwidth.
RFC 5661 (January 2010) and RFC 8434 (August 2018) specify protocol behavior and requirements; they do not publish comparative system benchmarks. A numeric performance claim therefore needs a workload-specific benchmark and its test conditions.
