Before connecting an AI agent, secure the account you’ll use to authorize it, grant only the permissions its task needs, require approval for consequential actions, and confirm you can see and revoke its access. These safeguards address different risks: strong sign-in protects the account, while permissions and approvals limit what an already-authorized agent can do. Neither prevents every mistake or misuse.
Use this checklist before you connect an agent
- Secure the authorizing account. Use a unique password if the service still relies on passwords, enable multifactor authentication (MFA), and choose a passkey or FIDO-compatible security key where supported. Review recent security activity and active sessions.
- Limit permissions to the task. Select only the data, resources, and actions the agent needs. Prefer read-only access when it is sufficient; avoid broad mailbox, file, payment, or administrative access for convenience.
- Require approval for consequential actions. Where available, have the agent ask before sending messages, making purchases, deleting data, or changing account and security settings.
- Protect credentials. Don’t put API keys in prompts or client-side code. Use supported secret storage, restrict which runtime components can retrieve credentials, and plan how to rotate them.
- Locate the revocation controls. Find the provider’s connected-app or OAuth-grant page and verify how to withdraw consent. For organizational use, also identify how to disable the agent identity, invalidate tokens, rotate credentials, and remove stale permissions.
- Decide how you’ll monitor use. Know where to review the agent’s activity and the downstream service’s authorization logs, not just the agent’s chat transcript.
Secure the account used to authorize the connection
MFA or a passkey helps protect the human or service account that grants access; it does not restrict an agent’s permissions after authorization. Where your provider supports them, passkeys and FIDO-compatible hardware security keys offer phishing-resistant sign-in. Check the provider’s recovery process before choosing a stronger sign-in method, especially if it limits fallback options.

Review account security history and active sessions before connecting. If you suspect compromise, change an exposed password, end active sessions, revoke affected API keys, and inspect account usage. Controls and availability differ by provider. For example, OpenAI says enabling MFA does not itself end existing sessions; its “log out all sessions” action may take up to 30 minutes to complete on other ChatGPT sessions. See OpenAI’s account-security guidance.
OpenAI Advanced Account Security is an optional, provider-specific setting
OpenAI’s Advanced Account Security announcement describes passkey or physical-key sign-in, disabled password login and email/SMS recovery for enrolled users, shorter sessions, and session alerts and management. The trade-off is significant: OpenAI says Support cannot assist with account recovery for enrolled users. Availability is for eligible users, so confirm eligibility and make sure you can retain access to your passkey or key before enabling it. It is not a universal setting for AI agents.

Give the agent the smallest useful permission set
Match access to the task: the specific data, resource, and actions required. If an agent only needs to find information, prefer read-only scopes over permission to edit, send, delete, or administer. Avoid granting broad access simply because a connection screen makes it easy.
Assess effective access across all roles, tools, and connected services—not each permission in isolation. Several narrow grants can combine into broad access. Where controls permit, default-deny integrations and cross-tenant paths that have not been reviewed. Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance for AI agents treats identity, scope, tool access, and auditability as design requirements before expanding autonomy.

- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
For organizational agents, establish identity and ownership
Give each organizational agent a distinct identity with a named owner and a documented purpose, permitted data, dependencies, and environment. Microsoft Entra guidance distinguishes autonomous agents from interactive agents and recommends choosing an OAuth flow suited to the scenario, granting only necessary application permissions, and periodically auditing consent to prevent permission creep.

Keep high-impact actions under human review
Turn on approval prompts for consequential actions whenever the platform offers them. In ChatGPT workspace app controls, “Always ask” requests approval before reading app information or making changes. “Allow read actions” allows reads without asking but prompts before changes. Broader action settings can carry more risk. These controls govern app actions; they are separate from provider OAuth consent. Check both, because changing an app’s action setting does not itself revoke the provider’s authorization. OpenAI’s ChatGPT connector guidance describes these workspace controls.
Use narrow instructions for each task rather than open-ended delegation such as “review my emails and take whatever action is needed.” External content can attempt to steer an agent. OpenAI defines prompt injection as a third party misleading a model by inserting malicious instructions into its context, and advises users to review details before confirming consequential actions. Approval prompts and other safeguards reduce exposure, but do not guarantee that every injection will be blocked. See OpenAI’s explanation of prompt injections.

Protect secrets and prepare to revoke access
Keep API keys out of prompts and client-side code. For development, OpenAI recommends environment variables; for GitHub Actions, it recommends GitHub secrets. It also advises using separate keys by feature, team, or project, rotating keys periodically, and monitoring API spending and usage. Follow the storage mechanism supported by your platform and limit which parts of your application can retrieve secrets. See OpenAI’s API key safety guidance.
Before connecting, find the provider’s page for connected applications or OAuth grants and learn how to withdraw consent. A disconnect button in the agent interface may not remove the provider’s existing consent. In an organization, test the full revocation path: disable the agent identity, invalidate tokens, rotate credentials, and remove permissions that are no longer needed. Microsoft recommends testing revocation paths as part of agent access management.

Monitor tool use and underlying actions
For organizational deployments, retain logs that let an administrator reconstruct what happened. Useful fields include the agent identity, effective scope, tool or action, resource, correlation ID, and any user on whose behalf the agent acted. Review downstream authorization and application-permission logs, and re-check access when workflows, tools, data, or environments change. A chat transcript alone may not show the actions needed to investigate misuse.
Compare connection options on the controls that matter
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Sign-in and recovery | Whether the account supports MFA, passkeys, or a FIDO-compatible key, and what recovery options you give up by enabling stronger protection. |
| Permission scope | Whether access is read-only or includes write, delete, send, payment, or administrative actions; consider combined access across roles and connected tools. |
| Action approvals | Whether high-impact actions require confirmation, and which actions are covered by each setting. |
| Consent visibility | Whether provider OAuth consent and the agent’s app-level action controls can be reviewed and changed separately. |
| Credential handling | Where secrets are stored, which components can retrieve them, and how credentials can be rotated. |
| Monitoring and revocation | Whether logs show underlying tool actions and whether you can promptly disable the identity, invalidate tokens, and withdraw consent. |
A FIDO security key is an optional way to strengthen sign-in where the account provider and your devices support it. OpenAI’s Advanced Account Security announcement names YubiKey C Nano and YubiKey C NFC among available hardware-key options and also describes support for other FIDO-compliant keys or software passkeys. Yubico describes its Security Key Series as hardware-based FIDO authentication. A key strengthens authentication; it does not replace least-privilege permissions, action approvals, or revocation planning.
