They reported nuclei with varied shapes and sizes, diffuse boundaries around stable cores, and behavior that included shrinking, regrowing, and dividing—observations that do not fit the simplified textbook picture of nucleation neatly.
What the researchers studied
The team examined iron–platinum nanoparticles changing from a disordered cubic structure to an ordered tetragonal one. Chemistry World reported that the sample was heated to 520°C for the transition.

This was a solid-to-solid phase transition, not the formation of a solid from a liquid. That distinction matters: the observations describe this alloy and this transformation, rather than crystallisation in every material or setting.

Atomic electron tomography (AET) reconstructs a three-dimensional arrangement of atoms by combining images taken as a sample is tilted. The researchers examined the same atoms at three reported times after heating: 9, 16, and 26 minutes. The “fourth dimension” was time added to three-dimensional structural information; the report describes snapshots at those times, not an uninterrupted movie.

What they saw in the nuclei
According to Chemistry World, the team tracked more than 60 nuclei and reported several features:
- Varied shapes and sizes: The observed nuclei did not all resemble ideal spheres.
- Diffuse interfaces: A stable core was surrounded by a gradual boundary with the surrounding material, rather than a perfectly sharp division between phases.
- Changing behavior: Some nuclei could shrink and then grow again, or divide.
Jianwei Miao said the smooth interface between the core and bulk could reduce the energy barrier to the phase transition. That is the team’s proposed explanation for this system, not a demonstrated rule for nucleation in other materials.

How the observations differ from the simplified classical picture
The report contrasts the findings with a textbook version of classical nucleation theory. In that simplified account, a nucleus is spherical, has a sharp boundary with the surrounding phase, and grows once it passes a critical size.
| Feature | Simplified classical picture described in the report | Observations reported in this experiment |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Spherical nucleus | Nuclei varied in shape and size |
| Boundary | Sharp separation between phases | Diffuse interface around a stable core |
| Evolution | Growth after reaching a critical size | Nuclei could shrink and regrow or divide |
The comparison shows why the study was described as a challenge to the textbook model: the observed atomic-scale behavior was more varied than that idealized account. It does not establish that classical theory is useless in every context; the report’s evidence is specific to the iron–platinum transition studied.

What the result does—and does not—say about crystallisation
The study offers a detailed view of one material undergoing one kind of solid-to-solid transformation. It does not show that liquid-to-solid crystallisation follows the same pattern. Chemistry World noted that AET was not suitable for studying some other transitions, including liquid-to-solid ones.
Miao suggested that the conclusions could be general, but that is an attributed view rather than a result demonstrated across multiple materials or transition types. The report raised ice nucleation and weather and climate prediction as areas where suitable techniques might eventually matter; those are possible implications, not findings of this experiment.
