If your Social Security number (SSN) was exposed, start with the breach notice and the FTC’s tailored checklist at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach. Review your credit reports, consider a free credit freeze, and use any breach-response service your district or its vendor actually offers. An exposed SSN does not prove that fraud has occurred, but prompt checks can help you spot and respond to misuse.
1. Verify the notice and save its details
Read the notice carefully. Note what information was exposed, the relevant dates, how the organization says to contact it, and whether it offers credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance. Keep a copy of the notice and any case number or instructions; you may need them when contacting the district, a bureau, a bank, or an agency.

If the message arrived unexpectedly, do not rely on its phone number, links, or reply address until you verify them. Contact your district’s HR, privacy, or information-security office using a phone number or address you already know, such as one in the staff directory or on a prior official document. Ask whether the notice is genuine and whether a vendor is handling the incident.
Do not send your full SSN in response to an unsolicited call, text, or email. The FTC cautions that organizations with a legitimate need for an SSN should not unexpectedly contact people to ask for it. Share only the information needed through a verified channel.

2. Follow the official breach-response checklist
Use the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov data-breach response page and answer its prompts for your situation. The FTC recommends ordering and reviewing your credit reports when your SSN was exposed, then looking for accounts or activity you do not recognize. You can also ask the district what information the notice confirms, what services are available, and where to send evidence if you find suspicious activity.
If the district or vendor offers free monitoring or identity-theft insurance, check the notice for eligibility, enrollment instructions, duration, which bureaus are covered, and the service’s terms. The FTC advises taking advantage of services offered after a breach, but the offer and its details depend on the specific incident.

3. Check your credit reports and choose a safeguard
Review your reports for unfamiliar accounts, credit inquiries, addresses, or other changes. A freeze and an initial fraud alert are both free, but they work differently:
| Option | What it does | What you need to do |
|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to your credit report for opening new credit while the freeze is in place. It does not affect your credit score. | Request it separately from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. It remains in place until you lift it; temporarily lift it when a lender needs access. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks lenders to verify your identity before opening new credit. It does not block access to your report in the same way as a freeze. | Request it from one of the three nationwide bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two. |
The FTC explains the current mechanics and bureau process in its credit freezes and fraud alerts guide. Consider which safeguard fits your circumstances; a freeze is a stronger barrier to new-credit applications, while an alert asks lenders to take an extra verification step.

4. Respond if you find signs of misuse
Look beyond credit reports. Review bank and other account statements, bills, and official notices for transactions, accounts, or activity you cannot explain. If you find fraud:
- Contact the affected company through a verified number or website. Ask its fraud department to secure the account and explain how to dispute the activity.
- Change the affected account’s password, and use strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication wherever available.
- Report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the personalized recovery steps. Save reports, letters, and case details.
The FTC’s identity-theft guidance covers warning signs, account protection, and safe handling of personal information. If you have paper records containing personal information that you no longer need, shredding them can reduce the risk of a separate exposure; it cannot undo an SSN disclosure.

5. Watch for tax, employment, and unemployment identity theft
Tax misuse
Warning signs can include a rejected tax return because one was already filed using your information, an IRS notice about multiple returns, or income reported by an employer you do not recognize. Report suspected identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov and follow the steps it provides. Depending on your situation, the IRS may require Form 14039, the Identity Theft Affidavit; the FTC’s tax identity-theft instructions explain the response and recovery process. You can also consider requesting an IRS Identity Protection PIN to help prevent someone else from filing a federal return using your SSN.

Unemployment-benefit fraud
If you receive a letter about unemployment benefits you did not claim, tell your employer and your state workforce agency, then report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC also recommends checking credit reports, considering a freeze, and considering an IRS Identity Protection PIN. Its unemployment identity-theft guidance outlines these steps.
6. Coordinate with your district safely
Use a known district contact—not details from an unverified message—to ask what the district knows about the exposure, whether a vendor is involved, what support is available, and where to send relevant evidence. Keep records of whom you contacted and the instructions you received. Do not assume every district offers the same services or that the same legal deadlines apply everywhere; those details depend on the incident, employer, and location, so rely on your actual notice and the appropriate district contact.
