Samsung Galaxy firmware security updates can include both Google’s Android security patches and fixes for vulnerabilities in Samsung software. To check what is installed on your phone, open Settings > Software update and look for Last update or System Update history; menu names vary by model and software version. Then compare the device’s software information with Samsung’s security bulletin for the relevant release.
What Samsung security updates fix
Samsung says its firmware security updates include patches for Android operating-system security issues released by Google, along with fixes for Samsung-specific security issues. Samsung publishes these releases as Security Maintenance Releases (SMRs), with entries identified by Google CVEs and Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVEs). Some bulletins also include patches from Samsung Semiconductor.

Bulletins may assign an issue a severity of critical, high, moderate, or low. They can also note that a fix was included in an earlier update or is not applicable to Samsung devices. A vulnerability appearing in a bulletin does not by itself mean every Galaxy model is affected or received that fix in the same release. Firmware updates and app updates are different
A firmware SMR covers device software security patches. Security fixes for an individual Samsung app or service can arrive separately through Galaxy Store or Google Play Store and may have their own affected and resolved app versions, listed in Samsung’s service bulletin.

For example, Samsung’s service bulletin published October 6, 2026, lists Samsung Internet 30.0.5.24 as the resolved version for an input-validation issue identified as SVE-2026-2694/CVE-2026-21132. That example concerns the app’s version; it does not establish the firmware patch level installed on any particular phone.
How to check security-update details on your Galaxy
- Open update history: Go to Settings > Software update (or System updates on some models), then look for Last update or System Update history. Some versions show a Learn more link or update details. Samsung’s support instructions note that available labels depend on the model and software version.
- Check the installed software: Go to Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Software information. This screen can show the One UI version, Android version, and build number. Samsung’s bulletins identify the Samsung security index (SSI) under Security software version; use the index and the phone’s patch information to check the relevant release, rather than assuming every bulletin item applies to your model.
- Look for the security-update control: On supported interfaces, Samsung documents Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Security update. The path and available controls vary across devices and software versions.
- Read the matching SMR bulletin: On Samsung’s security-update page, select the relevant month and year. Check its Google CVE, Samsung SVE, and any chipset or vendor sections, along with publication dates and revision notes. - Check app updates separately: If you are checking a Samsung app or service, look up its current version in Galaxy Store or Google Play Store and compare it with Samsung’s service bulletin. An app fix and a firmware fix use different delivery paths.
Why update timing and coverage vary
Samsung’s support page says that, as of January 2024, it was extending security-update support for Galaxy devices by up to seven years. “Up to” is a maximum support-policy duration, not a promise that every phone receives monthly updates for that entire period. Samsung assigns selected devices monthly, quarterly, or biannual firmware schedules, and its supported-device lists can change as support periods end.

Availability and timing can differ by model, market, and network provider. Some carriers may use a quarterly schedule for models that otherwise qualify for more frequent updates. Samsung also says a planned patch may be delayed by a regular OS upgrade; when that upgrade is delivered, it will include up-to-date security patches. Some chipset-vendor or device-specific fixes may be deferred to a later package, and an SVE may already have been included in an earlier release. Check Samsung’s security-update scope and current supported-device information for the latest policy and schedule.
