What Risks Should Investors Consider When Buying Construction Company Stocks?

Construction stocks face company-specific risks tied to project cycles, contract execution, labor and materials, customer concentration, accounting estimates and financing. Here is what to check in a contractor’s filings.

Construction stocks can be exposed to economic cycles, cost overruns, labor and supply constraints, customer concentration, accounting estimates and debt. The risks differ sharply by contractor: an infrastructure builder, homebuilder and industrial-services company may depend on different customers, funding sources and contract terms. Before investing, examine the company’s latest filings for its project mix, contract structure, backlog, cost exposure, concentrations and balance sheet.

Why construction stocks can be hard to assess

A contractor’s revenue may be tied to projects that take months or years to complete. During that time, customer funding, labor availability, material prices, schedules and project conditions can change. A strong backlog or large contract therefore does not, by itself, establish that the work will be profitable or completed on the expected timetable.

The examples below are drawn mainly from U.S. public-company disclosures. They identify risks to investigate, not a prediction that every construction company faces each risk to the same degree.

What can cause demand to weaken?

Demand depends on the customers and end markets a company serves. Recessions, higher financing costs, customer capital constraints and shifts in public spending can delay, reduce or cancel projects. Residential building, industrial construction, public infrastructure and maintenance work do not necessarily move in sync.

Sterling Infrastructure’s 2025 Form 10-K describes exposure to recession and customer cycles, supply disruptions, material prices, inflation, interest rates and trade issues, including the possibility that adverse end-market conditions delay, reduce or cancel projects: Sterling Infrastructure 2025 Form 10-K. Use a company’s segment and customer disclosures to understand which demand drivers matter to it rather than assuming all construction activity has the same cycle.

How can a contract lose money?

Contract size is not the same as contract profitability. Under lump-sum or other fixed-price arrangements, a contractor may have to absorb costs above the amount it can recover from the customer. Fixed-unit-price work can also leave cost exposure where actual quantities, productivity or execution differ from assumptions.

Review whether the company relies on fixed-price, fixed-unit-price, cost-reimbursable or time-and-materials work, and look for disclosures about:

  • Bid and cost-estimate accuracy, including expected labor, materials and equipment.
  • Changed site or project conditions, design or technical problems, weather and schedule delays.
  • Cost-control performance, project losses, contract adjustments, claims or liquidated damages.
  • Escalation clauses and the extent to which higher costs can be passed to customers.

Company filings describe how inaccurate estimates or failure to control actual costs can reduce margins or produce contract losses. A filing’s risk language may not quantify how much inflation the company can pass through, so compare it with reported margins, cash conversion and later financial disclosures. See the construction-contract risk discussion in the SEC-filed 2025 annual report.

How do labor, suppliers and materials affect results?

Shortages or rising costs for skilled labor, subcontractors, materials, fuel and equipment can raise expenses and disrupt schedules. If a contractor cannot secure workers or supplies when needed, it may face slower completion, lower productivity, reduced profitability or limits on its ability to bid for additional work.

Exposure depends on contract terms, procurement practices and market position. Compare the company’s disclosures about labor, subcontractor and supplier dependence with its margins and cash flow; do not assume it can recover every increase from customers. Sterling Infrastructure’s filing discusses input and supply risks, while the SEC-filed 2025 annual report also describes construction cost and execution exposure.

Why do customer, regional and public-funding concentrations matter?

A company that depends heavily on one customer, region or end market may be especially vulnerable if that buyer delays a project, loses funding or changes its spending plans. Public-sector contractors can also be affected by appropriations, procurement priorities, program delays, cancellations and policy changes.

Construction Partners reported that the Florida Department of Transportation accounted for 13.6% of consolidated revenue in fiscal 2025. That is a company-specific concentration example, not an industry average: Construction Partners 2025 Annual Report.

Granite Construction describes diversification by customer, end market, geography and contract method as a way to address construction-business risks. It is a stated company strategy, not a guarantee against losses: Granite Construction 2025 Annual Report. In a company’s filings, check revenue by customer, end market and geography, as well as dependence on public awards and appropriations.

How can accounting estimates change reported earnings?

Some construction revenue is recognized over time using estimates that compare costs incurred with total expected costs. If expected project costs or outcomes change, reported revenue and profit can be revised; earlier earnings may be reduced or eliminated if estimates prove wrong.

Read the accounting policies alongside disclosures about contract assets and liabilities, receivables, retainage and loss-making projects. These details can help show whether reported earnings are converting into cash and whether unsettled project balances are building up. The SEC-filed 2025 annual report describes the risk that cost-to-cost estimates for revenue recognized over time may prove inaccurate.

Read backlog with its definition and conditions

Backlog is a company-disclosed measure, and its meaning and conditions should be checked in the issuer’s own filing. Look for whether listed work is signed or otherwise awarded, when completion is expected, and whether projects depend on funding or can be delayed or canceled. A backlog figure alone does not reveal expected margins, timing of cash collection or certainty of completion.

What debt and interest-rate risks should investors check?

Debt can reduce a contractor’s financial flexibility and make interest expense or refinancing conditions more consequential. Quanta Services lists significant debt among the material risks in its 2025 Form 10-K: Quanta Services 2025 Form 10-K. That disclosure is specific to Quanta; it does not establish a sector-wide leverage level.

For any company under consideration, examine its own balance sheet and cash-flow disclosures, debt maturities, borrowing costs and information about interest-rate exposure. Consider whether debt obligations could constrain spending or financial flexibility if project activity or cash receipts weaken.

How to compare construction companies

When comparing two or more stocks, use the same questions for each issuer and rely on current company filings for company-specific facts.

Comparison area What to examine
End markets and cyclicality Which sectors drive revenue, and how could their demand change with economic or financing conditions?
Customers and geography How much revenue depends on major buyers, regions or public-sector funding?
Contract economics What share of work is fixed-price, fixed-unit-price, cost-reimbursable or time-and-materials? Are escalation clauses or cost pass-throughs disclosed?
Execution record What do filings say about project losses, claims, schedule obligations, cost control and estimate revisions?
Labor and supply exposure How dependent is the company on scarce labor, subcontractors, suppliers, materials, fuel or equipment?
Backlog quality How does the issuer define backlog? What is the award status, expected timing and exposure to cancellation or funding conditions?
Earnings and cash conversion How do estimate changes, contract balances, receivables and retainage relate to reported profits and cash flow?
Debt and interest sensitivity What are the debt maturities, financing costs and disclosed interest-rate exposures?

These checks help distinguish a contractor’s disclosed exposures from broad sector assumptions. They do not determine whether a stock is attractively valued or suitable for a particular investor.
