Before buying a construction stock, check how the company would handle a slowdown, cost overruns, delayed projects and cash demands—not just how large its backlog looks. Compare its end markets and customers, contract terms, backlog quality, input costs, public-funding exposure, cash conversion, debt and bonding capacity using its latest annual and quarterly filings.
The examples below come from company disclosures for fiscal 2025, available as of October 7, 2026. They illustrate risks to investigate; they are not sector-wide averages or predictions of losses.

1. How exposed is the company to a downturn?
Construction demand is cyclical, but companies do not all respond to the same economic pressures. Residential building, commercial construction, infrastructure, utilities, construction materials and engineering services can depend on different customers, financing sources and budgets.
Identify the company’s revenue by end market, geography and customer. Consider whether it depends heavily on one project owner, state, customer, market segment or funding source. Higher interest rates, inflation, tighter credit, reduced affordability and weaker private investment can delay or reduce some work. Public infrastructure activity can also depend on appropriations and the timing of project lettings. Martin Marietta describes these factors in its discussion of construction-materials demand and infrastructure activity (Martin Marietta 2025 Form 10-K).
#1 Best Overall
That filing says residential and nonresidential construction markets together accounted for 58% of Martin Marietta’s aggregates shipments in 2025. This is the company’s shipment mix, not a measure of demand or exposure for construction stocks generally.
2. Who bears the cost risk on the contracts?
Look at the mix of fixed-price, fixed-unit-price, cost-reimbursable and time-and-materials work, when the company discloses it. Under a fixed-price or lump-sum arrangement, the contractor may have to absorb costs that exceed its estimate, putting the project’s margin at risk. Cost-recovery provisions, escalation clauses and other contract terms can change the exposure, so do not infer risk from the contract label alone.
Read disclosures about estimating, project controls, labor productivity, delays, change orders, claims and recognized contract losses. Sterling Infrastructure warns that inaccurate estimates or failure to control actual costs can make a contract less profitable or result in a loss (Sterling Infrastructure 2025 Form 10-K). Granite Construction also identifies inflation, tariffs, inefficiency and incorrect assumptions as potential sources of higher project costs (Granite Construction 2025 Form 10-K).

Compare contract mix with margins and project results over time. The disclosures do not establish that one contract type is always safer or more profitable; terms, execution and the company’s estimating record matter.
3. Is reported backlog likely to convert into profitable work?
Backlog is not guaranteed revenue, and revenue is not guaranteed profit. Read the issuer’s definition, then check whether projects are awarded, funded, permitted and authorized to proceed. Look for expected start and completion timing, cancellations, scope reductions or delays, and whether backlog growth reflects acquisitions. Ask what management expects the remaining work to earn.
Tutor Perini defines backlog as awarded work but cautions that projects may be cancelled or reduced, and reported backlog may not become revenue or may not be profitable (Tutor Perini 2025 Form 10-K). It reported approximately $20.6 billion of uncompleted construction backlog at December 31, 2025, and estimated that about $6 billion, or approximately 29%, would be recognized as 2026 revenue. Those are one company’s dated backlog and management estimate—not a sector benchmark, assurance of completed work or indication of profit.
4. Can the company control or pass through rising input costs?
Check exposure to labor availability and wages, materials, fuel, energy, tariffs, supplier disruptions and subcontractor capacity. Then look for contract provisions that permit cost recovery or escalation, and assess whether the company can secure materials and qualified subcontractors on schedule.

The practical question is not only whether costs rise, but how quickly the company can adjust bids, contracts and operations.
5. How much does the business depend on public funding?
For government-focused contractors, inspect the funding source and timing, procurement schedules, payment terms, audit exposure and contract rights. Check how termination or funding decisions could affect active projects and backlog, and what performance failures could mean for the company.

Granite said about 70% of its construction revenue in fiscal 2025 was funded by federal, state and local agencies and authorities (Granite Construction 2025 Form 10-K). That figure describes Granite’s own revenue mix, not the typical exposure of construction stocks. Tutor Perini’s filing also illustrates that government customers’ funding and termination decisions can affect project timing and backlog (Tutor Perini 2025 Form 10-K).

Compare operating cash flow with reported earnings. Review working capital, receivables, contract assets, retainage, capital spending, debt maturities, interest expense and available liquidity. Construction businesses may need to pay for labor and materials before receiving customer payments, so timing can matter even when a project is profitable on paper.

Also check whether bonding or collateral requirements could limit the company’s ability to take on new work. Quanta Services identifies surety-provider decisions, collateral costs, liquidity and cash needed for debt service and operations among its financial risks and funding needs (Quanta Services 2025 Form 10-K). No single cash-flow or debt threshold in these disclosures applies to every contractor; assess obligations and financing access alongside its business model and cash conversion.
How to compare construction companies
Use the same questions for each company, but interpret the answers in light of its business mix. These comparison dimensions are analytical guidance drawn from the company disclosures cited above, not a regulator-issued scoring framework.
- End-market, geographic, customer and public-funding concentration.
- Contract mix, cost-escalation protections and history of project margins or losses.
- Backlog definition, funding and authorization status, expected conversion timing and profitability.
- Exposure to labor, materials, fuel, tariffs, suppliers and subcontractors.
- Cash conversion, working capital, debt obligations, liquidity and bonding capacity.
Risk-factor disclosures describe what could happen; they do not predict that a loss will occur. Recheck the latest annual and quarterly filings because company disclosures and project conditions can change. The examples here reflect fiscal 2025 annual reports available as of October 7, 2026, not a valuation, ranking or recommendation for any particular security.
