Why 1080p30 is a sensible starting point
A waterfall is in constant motion, and its fine texture can expose compression artifacts. At 1080p30, the stream has more detail than 720p30 while avoiding the higher bitrate demands of 1440p or 4K. The right choice still depends on what your camera or video source can output, what your encoder supports, and the quality of your sustained upload.

YouTube’s general guidance is to choose a quality that will produce a reliable stream on your internet connection. It does not publish a waterfall-specific resolution rule or a test proving that one resolution is universally best for this subject. Treat 1080p30 as a starting point to test, not a guaranteed optimum. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance also notes that live streams are transcoded into multiple output formats for viewers.

Compare the recommended bitrates
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended incoming video bitrates. They are targets for configuring and testing the encoder; they do not establish a guaranteed upload-speed threshold. The table separates the codec recommendations because the appropriate figure depends on the codec you use.

For a typical fixed-camera waterfall scene, 30 fps is a practical first test. Consider 60 fps only if your source and encoder can supply it reliably and you can see a reason to capture motion at that rate. YouTube’s guidance includes minimum bitrates as well, but its recommended values are the clearer starting targets; choose a mode that your real connection can sustain.
Set the encoder for a stable ingest
YouTube’s current guide supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. RTMPS is the encrypted option YouTube recommends. Use the settings below where your encoder exposes them.

- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit.
- HDR: YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
Use the stream key and ingest settings shown in YouTube’s live control room for the event, and keep the key private. Exact encoder menus vary by device and software, so follow the encoder’s instructions for entering YouTube’s server and key rather than assuming a universal menu path.
Test the actual waterfall feed before leaving it unattended
- Choose a candidate mode. Start at 1080p30 and the recommended bitrate for your selected codec, provided the source and encoder support it. If not, choose a mode they can provide.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. YouTube specifically recommends testing with comparable audio and video movement before starting a live stream.
- Inspect the picture. Look closely at water texture, edges, and moving detail for blocking, smearing, or loss of detail. Check that audio is present if the stream uses it.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Read its health messages while the test is running. The Live Streaming API’s health information can identify problems such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing audio, or video ingestion starvation.
- Repeat at a lower mode if needed. If 1080p30 does not remain stable under real conditions, try 720p30 at the recommended bitrate for your codec and compare the result.
A successful short test is useful evidence about configuration and delivery, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation for a 24/7 stream. Keep monitoring stream health after launch.

Plan for unattended operation
A resolution setting alone does not keep a stream live around the clock. A do-it-yourself setup also depends on the source, encoder, sustained internet connection, and the equipment remaining powered and connected. For a 24/7 broadcast, plan how you will notice a dropped stream and restore it; YouTube health information helps diagnose delivery issues but is not a promise of continuous availability.
