What Records to Keep for Reporting Crypto Swaps in France

A practical recordkeeping guide for French private crypto investors: document swaps, support Form 2086 calculations, and distinguish tax-deferred exchanges from taxable disposals.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a French tax resident investing as a private individual, a crypto-to-crypto exchange without a cash or other balancing payment (a soulte) is generally tax-deferred and is not itself a disposal to report on Form 2086. Keep the swap records anyway: they help establish your holdings and support the figures for a later taxable disposal. Sales for euros or other legal tender, payments for goods or services, and exchanges involving a soulte can be taxable. The French tax authority’s guidance explains the distinction.

The practical goal is to preserve enough evidence to reconstruct what happened, when it happened, what you received or paid, and the value of your full portfolio when a taxable disposal occurred. Form 2086 does not calculate a gain from the sold token alone: it uses portfolio-wide figures, so records from exchanges and self-custody both matter.

What to keep in your crypto tax records

Form 2086 relies on details for each relevant disposal and on figures covering your entire digital-asset portfolio. The following is a practical evidence file based on those official inputs, not an official exhaustive retention checklist. Keep records in a form you can reconcile to transactions, portfolio values and the return you file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each record, preserve enough context to link it to the underlying activity: platform or wallet, account or address, asset, timestamp, quantity, transaction identifier and any relevant value or fee. A collection of numbers without a clear source can be difficult to reconcile later. The aim is not a particular paper ledger or software product; it is to be able to trace the return figures back to source information.

Exchange, broker and protocol activity

  • Save dated transaction exports, trade confirmations, deposits, withdrawals, fees and account statements.
  • Record the platform or protocol, account identifier, asset identifiers, transaction or order ID, timestamp, quantities given and received, quoted values and the currency used.
  • For swaps, note any cash or other balancing payment paid or received. That detail can affect whether the exchange is tax-deferred or potentially taxable.
  • Keep records from all relevant services rather than only the platform where a particular disposal occurred. The portfolio calculation is not limited to one exchange account.

Exports and statements serve different purposes: a transaction export may show individual activity, while statements can help establish the account and period covered. Keep both when available and retain the source data in a form that can be checked or corrected. Do not assume a current account screen will always be enough to reconstruct older transactions.

Wallet and on-chain activity

  • Keep wallet addresses under your control, transaction hashes, dates and times, asset quantities, and records of transfers between your own wallets.
  • Label an own-wallet transfer as a transfer, rather than treating it as a sale without checking the underlying facts. The cited official material does not set out a detailed self-transfer checklist.
  • Where a wallet record is not self-explanatory, retain enough information to connect it with the wallet or account on the other side of the movement.

These records help distinguish movements within your own holdings from a disposal to another party. The official sources reviewed do not prescribe a special method for documenting self-transfers, so avoid presenting any one wallet-labeling system as mandatory.

Acquisition history and portfolio values

  • Retain purchase confirmations, acquisition dates and prices, and records of relevant acquisition costs for all assets affecting the portfolio’s total acquisition cost.
  • For each taxable disposal, preserve evidence of the value of all digital assets you held at that time, including assets on exchanges, personal servers and offline storage.
  • Keep the valuation timestamp, method, market or source, units and currency-conversion basis so the global value can be reconstructed.

The acquisition history matters beyond the asset sold in a particular transaction: Form 2086’s formula uses the total acquisition price of the digital-asset portfolio. Similarly, the portfolio value is a snapshot at the time of disposal and includes holdings across storage locations. Preserve both the raw evidence and the calculation you used to arrive at the totals; that makes it easier to identify gaps or correct an input without losing the original source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filing workpapers and foreign-account details

  • Keep a copy of the filed Form 2086 and the corresponding 2042 or 2042-C declaration, along with calculations showing how transaction data was reconciled to the reported totals.
  • Track provider and account details for qualifying crypto-asset accounts opened, held, used or closed with a foreign provider. Form 3916/3916 bis is a separate account-disclosure question; it is not part of the Form 2086 gain calculation.

The official sources specify return fields and calculation inputs, but do not prescribe an exclusive recordkeeping tool, file format or storage medium. The material cited here also does not state a specific retention period. Do not treat a suggested spreadsheet, software package or storage device as a legal requirement.

Are crypto swaps taxable in France?

For private investors, the key distinction is whether a swap includes a soulte. An exchange of digital assets without a soulte is treated as an intermediary operation with tax deferral; it is not itself a taxable disposal to report on Form 2086. A disposal for legal tender, goods or services, or an exchange with a soulte can be taxable. The tax authority’s published tax doctrine describes the applicable treatment.

This distinction is why swap records matter even when the swap itself is not reported as a taxable disposal: they help establish what you acquired and the history of the portfolio used in calculating a later disposal. Do not assume that every crypto-to-crypto exchange is taxable, or that every transaction labelled a “swap” is tax-deferred; record the consideration and facts of the transaction.

For example, the record should make it possible to see which assets and quantities were exchanged, the transaction time, the service or protocol involved, any quoted values and fees, and whether cash or another balancing payment was involved. Preserve the transaction or order identifier where one exists. Those facts support the classification; the label in an app or protocol alone does not establish the tax treatment.

How Form 2086 calculates a taxable disposal

The 2026 Form 2086 notice applies to 2025 income. The French tax authority says taxpayers must provide information for each relevant disposal. Its formula calculates gross gain or loss using the disposal price, the acquisition cost of the overall digital-asset portfolio and the portfolio’s global value at the time of disposal:

Gross gain or loss = disposal price − [total acquisition price of the digital-asset portfolio × disposal price ÷ global value of the portfolio]

In other words, the calculation does not look only at the token sold or the exchange where the transaction happened. It uses the total acquisition price of the portfolio and its global value at the time of the taxable disposal. Assets held across exchanges and in self-custody count. Preserve support for both inputs, as well as the disposal price and transaction details. See the 2026 Form 2086 page and its 2026 notice for 2025 income.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

This has two practical consequences. First, a statement showing the amount received in a sale is only one part of the evidence file; the portfolio acquisition-cost and global-value inputs also need support. Second, a balance from one exchange is not necessarily the global portfolio value if you also held assets in other accounts or wallets. Record the valuation time and the basis used so you can explain how the full-portfolio figure was assembled.

The individual guidance directs taxpayers to report the annual total on Form 2086 and carry the result to the relevant 2042-C line. Use the form vintage for the income year being reported, and follow the current filing interface and instructions: online and paper pathways can differ. Do not assume that an older saved form or a previous year’s online sequence is still the correct one.

How to assemble and reconcile your records

  1. Export source data. Download dated activity records from every exchange, broker and relevant service. Preserve statements and confirmations rather than relying only on a platform’s current transaction view.
  2. Gather wallet evidence. Collect addresses, transaction hashes and timestamps for on-chain activity, and identify movements between your own wallets.
  3. Classify transactions by what happened. Record whether each event was a swap without a soulte, a swap with a soulte, a disposal for legal tender, or an exchange for goods or services. Preserve quantities and any cash or other consideration.
  4. Build acquisition history. Reconcile purchases and relevant acquisition costs across assets and accounts so the total portfolio acquisition cost can be supported.
  5. Reconstruct the portfolio at each taxable disposal. Gather contemporaneous values for assets in exchange accounts and self-custody. Record the valuation time, method, source, units and currency conversion basis.
  6. Reconcile to the return. Retain the calculations linking transaction records and portfolio inputs to Form 2086 and the annual total carried to the relevant 2042-C line. Follow the current filing interface and form instructions because online and paper routes can differ.
  7. Check foreign-account disclosure separately. Identify qualifying accounts held with foreign providers and determine whether the separate Form 3916/3916 bis declaration applies.

A useful final check is to ask whether every reported disposal can be connected to its source record and whether the portfolio snapshot includes assets outside the platform that executed it. If a total depends on a conversion or valuation choice, preserve the source, timing and method rather than keeping only the final number. That creates a workpaper trail without implying that the DGFiP requires a specific software workflow.

What the €305 threshold means

Under the DGFiP’s 2026 guidance, the relevant threshold is whether the sum of annual gross disposal prices exceeds €305; exchanges under tax deferral are excluded from that sum. If the total does not exceed €305, the disposals are exempt under the stated rule. If it exceeds €305, the threshold is not a €305 deduction from gains: the relevant gains are brought into the calculation under the applicable rules. The 2026 income-tax brochure says Form 2086 details must still be supplied even when the disposal-price total is below €305. This is a threshold for the stated 2026 guidance, not a universal gains allowance; check the rules for the income year you are filing. DGFiP’s individual guidance and the 2026 income-tax brochure provide the applicable detail.

For recordkeeping, keep the gross disposal prices and the dates that let you total them for the year, while separately identifying exchanges that fall under tax deferral. Do not confuse the threshold with a tax-free allowance that can simply be subtracted from a gain. The rule concerns the annual disposal-price total under its stated conditions, not the amount of profit.

Keep account reporting and activity classification separate

Foreign accounts

A French resident may have a separate obligation to declare qualifying crypto-asset accounts opened, held, used or closed with a foreign provider. Keep provider and account-identification details to assess and complete Form 3916/3916 bis where required. This disclosure is separate from Form 2086’s gain calculation. See the Form 3916/3916 bis page.

Accordingly, do not use the fact that you had no taxable disposal as a reason to overlook the separate account question. The two filings answer different questions: Form 2086 concerns gains or losses from relevant disposals, while Form 3916/3916 bis concerns qualifying foreign accounts. Keep account details in a separate, easy-to-find part of your records.

Private investing versus professional-like activity

This guidance concerns private management of personal assets. The DGFiP says commercial activity may be taxed as BIC and professional-like activity as BNC; it identifies numerous and sophisticated activity using professional trader methods as relevant to professional-like status. Mining and staking income also have separate treatment, with the cited guidance placing it under BNC. If your trading is frequent, sophisticated or resembles professional activity, or you receive crypto income beyond private disposals, check your classification against your circumstances rather than assuming the private-investor rules apply. DGFiP’s guidance outlines these distinctions.

The rate is also year-sensitive. DGFiP’s guidance updated 17 July 2026 describes a 31.4% total rate for private investors, made up of 12.8% income tax and 18.6% social contributions. Confirm the rate and treatment for the income year in question rather than treating a current guidance figure as permanent.

Choosing a way to organize records

No particular recordkeeping product is required by the sources reviewed. If you use a spreadsheet, tax calculation software or another system, assess it by whether it can bring together exchange and self-custody activity; retain timestamps, quantities, fees and transaction identifiers; reconstruct portfolio values at taxable disposal times; and let you review, correct and preserve source data independently of a platform account. These are practical comparison criteria inferred from Form 2086 inputs, not official endorsements or mandatory features.

Crypto tax calculation software with French Form 2086 support or a French tax professional experienced in crypto classification may be relevant options for some readers, especially where records span many platforms or the activity raises classification questions. No provider or affiliate recommendation has been verified here. A generic notebook, hardware wallet or storage device is not specifically required by the tax guidance and does not, by itself, perform the Form 2086 calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to report a crypto-to-crypto swap in France?

For a private investor, an exchange of digital assets without a soulte is generally an intermediary operation with tax deferral and is not itself a taxable disposal to report on Form 2086. Keep its records because the transaction can help establish your later holdings and portfolio history. An exchange with a soulte may be taxable.

What records do I need for Form 2086?

Keep source records for each relevant disposal, including dates, assets and quantities, transaction identifiers, disposal consideration and fees, plus evidence of the total acquisition cost and global value of your entire digital-asset portfolio at the disposal time. Include assets held on exchanges and in self-custody, and retain the calculations linking those inputs to the filed form.

Does the €305 threshold mean I can deduct €305 from my crypto gains?

No. Under the DGFiP’s 2026 guidance, the threshold concerns the sum of annual gross disposal prices, excluding exchanges under tax deferral. If that total exceeds €305, it is not a €305 deduction from gains. The 2026 income-tax brochure says Form 2086 details are still required when the total is below €305. Check the rules for the income year you are filing.

Do I need to report a foreign crypto account on Form 2086?

Form 2086 reports relevant disposals and their gain or loss calculation. Qualifying accounts with foreign providers may require a separate Form 3916/3916 bis disclosure. Keep provider and account details and assess that obligation independently.

Is there a required software, file format or retention period?

The official sources reviewed specify return fields and calculation inputs, but do not prescribe an exclusive tool, file format or storage medium, and they do not state a specific retention period in the material reviewed. Use a method that preserves source data and lets you reconstruct and reconcile the filing figures.

The Bottom Line

For a French private investor, a crypto swap without a soulte is generally tax-deferred, but it still belongs in a records trail. Keep transaction and wallet evidence, acquisition history, and support for the value and acquisition cost of your entire portfolio at each taxable disposal. Separate the Form 2086 calculation from foreign-account disclosure, check the €305 rule for the filing year, and verify current instructions if your activity may be professional-like.
