When you open Google.com, your browser resolves the hostname to an IP address, establishes or reuses a secure connection, sends an HTTP request, and processes the response to display a page. The details—such as the DNS method, destination address, network route, and HTTP version—depend on your browser, device, network, and Google’s service configuration. The address alone does not reveal the exact route or server for a particular visit.
How a Google.com navigation works
1. The browser interprets the address
Submitting google.com starts a navigation. In Chromium, requests are handled by the browser’s network service, and a request can follow redirects until it reaches a final response or encounters an error or cancellation. Other browsers may implement the internals differently.

2. The hostname is resolved
The device needs an IP address associated with the hostname before it can contact the destination. Google’s Chrome Enterprise explanation puts it plainly: “The device must resolve fully qualified domain names (FQDN) to an IP address.” Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help
The DNS lookup may use a cached result or contact a configured resolver. The exchange is not necessarily a plain DNS query over UDP on port 53: depending on browser and device configuration, DNS may use encrypted transports such as DNS over HTTPS (DoH) or DNS over TLS (DoT). Those methods protect the client-to-resolver DNS exchange; they do not encrypt every later network hop or conceal all browsing information from every party.

3. The browser establishes or reuses a connection
A basic model is a TCP handshake followed by an HTTP request. That is useful for understanding the sequence, but it is not the only modern possibility. The browser may reuse an existing connection, use HTTP/2 over TCP, or use HTTP/3 over QUIC. HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 can multiplex multiple requests and responses over a connection.
HTTP/2 uses TCP. HTTP/3 uses QUIC over UDP; under RFC 9114, HTTP/3 uses QUIC version 1, which uses TLS 1.3 or later. A browser may try HTTP/3 when available and use a TCP-based HTTP version if QUIC connectivity fails. The exact protocol selected for a visit cannot be inferred from typing Google.com.

4. HTTPS protects and authenticates the exchange
For an HTTPS navigation, the browser checks that the server’s certificate is acceptable for the requested origin. This helps authenticate the site and protect data in transit between the browser and the HTTPS endpoint. It does not, by itself, identify which physical machine or backend ultimately handles the request.

5. The browser sends a request and receives a response
The browser asks for a resource—typically the page at the requested address—and receives an HTTP response. The response may be preceded by redirects, so the initial address need not be the final URL that supplies the page. The request and response use the negotiated connection and protocol.

6. The browser processes the response
The browser processes the returned content and any resources needed to display the page. A general description of browser rendering explains the sequence, but it is not a trace of a particular Google.com visit: the precise content, requests, and rendering work can vary.

Several parts of the path can differ even when the address is the same:

- Intel Celeron N3160 Quad-Core Processor 1.6GHz with Intel Burst Technology up to 2.24GHz
- 14" Full HD ComfyView Widescreen IPS LED-backlit Display
- 4GB LPDDR3 Onboard Memory, 32GB Internal Storage
- Google Chrome Operating System.Up to 12-hours Battery Life
- Pointing Device Type TouchPad
- DNS: the resolver, DNS transport, and whether an answer is already cached can depend on browser, operating system, and network settings.
- Connection: the browser may reuse a connection or create a new one; HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 availability can affect the protocol used.
- Destination and route: the IP address reached and the network path can vary with service and network conditions.
- Server-side handling: the service may route or process requests in ways that are not visible from the URL.
Google Cloud documentation describes Google Front End (GFE) proxies terminating connections for Google APIs in almost all cases. That statement concerns Google APIs; it does not establish the exact path used by Google Search. Likewise, Google Cloud load-balancer documentation describes Alt-Svc and fallback behavior for those load balancers, not proof of Google Search’s configuration.
What the URL cannot tell you
Seeing google.com does not tell you which IP address, point of presence, network route, cache, HTTP version, or backend served that particular visit. Those details require evidence from the visit itself, such as an appropriately captured network trace; general protocol documentation cannot identify them. No specific Google.com visit is measured or traced here.
