Rapid Trigger changes how the keyboard resets and re-arms that key after movement begins in the opposite direction, which can reduce the travel needed before a repeated input. They are related controls, but they do different jobs—and both depend on the keyboard’s sensing hardware, controller and firmware.
How a Hall-effect keyboard detects a keypress
A Hall-effect switch moves a magnet with the key stem. A sensor on the keyboard’s circuit board detects changes in the magnet’s field as the key moves, producing a signal that corresponds to the key’s position. Keyboard electronics interpret that signal to decide when to register an input. Texas Instruments describes using the sensor’s linear output with an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to set an actuation point. Texas Instruments’ application note also discusses the electronics trade-offs involved in reading many keys.

Unlike a conventional mechanical switch, which registers through physical metal contacts closing, Hall-effect sensing is contactless. But the magnet alone does not provide every advertised feature: the sensor, PCB controller and firmware must work together to interpret the position signal. A magnetic replacement switch is not automatically compatible with every keyboard or guaranteed to enable Rapid Trigger. Gateron explains the role of the complete system.

What adjustable actuation means
Actuation is the point in a key’s downward travel at which the keyboard registers a press. Adjustable actuation lets you choose that point, within the range supported by the keyboard. A shallower setting registers with less downward movement; a deeper setting requires more movement and may help avoid accidental presses. Where the software allows per-key adjustment, you can choose different settings for different keys.

Actuation distance is not the same as total switch travel. The first is the configured position where a press registers; the second is the full physical movement available to the key. For example, Gateron states that its Magnetic Jade Pro has 3.5±0.1 mm of total travel, while a compatible keyboard determines where within that travel an input registers. That figure describes this switch, not Hall-effect switches generally. Gateron’s explanation provides the product example.
What Rapid Trigger changes
With a fixed actuation and reset arrangement, a key registers after it passes its actuation point, and another press may require it to rise past a separate reset point before it can register again. Rapid Trigger can instead use changes in direction: after a press, a small upward movement can reset or re-arm the key, and a subsequent downward movement can register another input.

This does not make the key physically move faster. It can reduce how far you need to lift the key before another press is accepted. That can be useful for repeated inputs such as strafing, counter-movement or rhythm-game patterns. It is not a measured guarantee of better performance, and a highly sensitive setting may take practice and precise finger control. CORSAIR’s explanation of Rapid Trigger describes the behavior; ASUS ROG’s technology page describes its implementation.
How the two features differ

A keyboard may offer either feature or both, and the controls may differ by model. As Gateron puts it, adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger are related but not the same feature.

What to check when comparing keyboards
Do not treat the smallest advertised actuation number as a shortcut for judging keyboard quality or real-world advantage. Check how the whole implementation works and whether its controls suit your use:
- Actuation range and increments: Find the supported range and how precisely you can set it.
- Rapid Trigger controls: Check what movement or sensitivity behavior the keyboard lets you configure.
- Key coverage: Confirm whether settings apply per key, to selected keys or only to a preset group.
- Calibration and software: Check whether calibration is needed, which companion software is required and which settings are available in it.
- Settings persistence: Verify whether the keyboard retains your configuration when its software is not running; this is not a universal capability.
- Typing feel and layout: Consider these alongside the magnetic sensing features rather than assuming the feature list determines the overall experience.
Published specifications are vendor- and model-specific. Razer states that its HE magnetic switches support adjustable actuation from 0.1 to 4.0 mm through Razer Synapse and describes calibration on demand; its page lists Huntsman V3 HE models. Razer’s technology page describes that implementation. ASUS lists a 0.1–4.0 mm actuation range for ROG HFX switches. For the Falchion Ace HFX specifically, ASUS says Rapid Trigger is enabled by default for WASD, with other keys configurable through Armoury Crate or Armoury Crate Gear. ASUS ROG’s Rapid Trigger page gives those model details.

CORSAIR describes per-key actuation adjustment and Rapid Trigger on its Hall-effect products, and identifies the K70 MAX as its first Hall-effect keyboard entry in 2023. CORSAIR’s guide covers its feature description. Gateron’s GT60 Lite HE PCB is an example of a platform that combines Hall sensing with software-programmable pre-travel. These examples show why specifications should be checked for the exact keyboard and compatible software rather than inferred from the presence of a magnetic switch.
What the published numbers do—and do not—show
Texas Instruments’ 2025 application note uses a standard full-size keyboard with 104 keys as an engineering design example. It explains that reading keys directly with analog sensing can create a corresponding ADC-pin requirement, then discusses enable and multiplexing approaches to reduce the number of ADCs needed. This is an electronics design discussion, not a performance benchmark for consumer keyboards.

The stated 0.1–4.0 mm ranges above describe Razer and ASUS implementations, respectively; they are not a universal Hall-effect specification. Likewise, Gateron’s 3.5±0.1 mm figure is total travel for the Magnetic Jade Pro example, not an adjustable actuation range. These measurements describe different things and should not be compared as if they were the same setting.
Vendor sensitivity or actuation figures do not establish that one keyboard has lower latency or improves player performance. The available product descriptions do not provide a robust independent statistic comparing latency or gameplay results across Hall-effect keyboard models.
