RAM cleaners can make a device report more free memory, usually by asking apps to release memory or discarding cached data. That does not necessarily make the device faster: Windows and Android already manage memory, and cached RAM can help apps resume quickly. To tell whether memory is really a problem, look for persistent slowdowns, app reloads or interruptions—not a high usage percentage alone.
What a RAM cleaner actually does
A RAM cleaner tries to reduce the amount of memory shown as occupied. Depending on the utility, it may ask apps to release memory, close or interrupt apps, or discard cached data that the operating system could recreate or reload. It does not make an app use less memory while that app continues doing the same work.

That distinction matters: a cleaner may change the free-memory reading without reducing the workload’s ongoing demand. If an app needs discarded content again, the system may have to retrieve it from storage, delaying the return to that app.
Why occupied RAM is not automatically a problem
Windows
Windows distinguishes in-use memory from available memory. Microsoft defines available memory as free memory plus standby memory; standby pages hold cached data and files that are not actively being used. Windows can make those pages available to applications as needed, so a large amount of occupied RAM does not mean that the same amount is unavailable. See Microsoft’s Memory Footprint assessment.

- A-Tech 32GB RAM Kit (2 x 16GB Modules), DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 2666MHz / 2667MHz PC4-21300 (PC4-2666V)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select DDR4 SODIMM capable Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) computer systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
Windows can also trim or page out content used earlier. If an application later needs content that is no longer resident in memory, it must be read from disk, which can slow the return to that app, according to Microsoft’s app-performance guidance.
Android
Android keeps recently used apps cached so switching back can be faster. Under memory pressure, it can reclaim clean file-backed pages, compress some dirty pages into zRAM, and terminate processes by priority if those steps do not free enough space. Manufacturers can adjust some low-memory-killer behavior. Android Developers summarizes the platform’s approach this way: “The Android platform runs on the premise that free memory is wasted memory.” This is a statement from its Memory allocation among processes documentation, not a quotation attributed to a named individual.

What a RAM cleaner cannot promise
- It cannot fix an app’s continuing memory demand. If an app remains open and performs the same work, cleanup does not make that work require less memory.
- A lower usage number does not prove better performance. It may mean cached data was discarded or apps were closed, rather than that the underlying workload changed.
- Cleanup can trade memory readings for slower returns. If the system or app needs discarded data again, it may have to reload it from storage.
- It does not replace the operating system’s memory management. Windows and Android already make memory available under pressure, using their respective rules.
These platform behaviors do not establish that every cleaner app is fraudulent, harmful or identical. They do mean that a claim of “more free RAM” alone is not evidence that a particular utility improves responsiveness.

How to tell whether memory is causing a real problem
- Start with symptoms. Note persistent slowdowns, apps that reload when you return to them, or interruptions. Do not treat an arbitrary free-memory target as the goal.
- Check which apps or workloads are using memory. Use the operating system’s own memory indicators to distinguish active use from available or cached memory. On Windows, Microsoft’s Memory Footprint assessment explains the in-use and available categories.
- Address the demand, not just the reading. Close or adjust an app that is using excessive resources, reduce the workload, or update or fix an app that appears to have a memory leak. Microsoft’s guidance for reducing app memory use includes lowering foreground use, minimizing background work, releasing resources in the background and preventing leaks.
- Consider capacity only if the workload repeatedly exceeds it. On a computer that supports a RAM upgrade, more physical memory may help when normal use repeatedly outstrips available capacity. Compatibility depends on the exact computer; verify its supported memory and modules before buying.
Cleaner, memory view or RAM upgrade?
| Option | What it tells or changes | Possible effect on app switching | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in memory view | Can help identify memory use and distinguish in-use from available memory. | Does not itself change memory use. | Interpret the categories and symptoms; a high occupied figure alone does not diagnose a problem. |
| RAM cleaner | May request releases, close apps or discard cached data; it may change the displayed free-memory amount. | Apps or discarded content may need to be reopened or reloaded. | Does not reduce an app’s ongoing demand simply by lowering the reading. The cited platform documentation does not establish a winning third-party cleaner. |
| Hardware upgrade | Adds physical memory if the computer supports an upgrade. | May help a workload that repeatedly exceeds available capacity. | Requires checking the exact computer’s upgrade support and compatible modules. |
Microsoft recommends understanding an application’s memory allocation and analyzing system traces to find ways to reduce its use. That points toward diagnosing the process or workload first, rather than assuming a cleaner or an upgrade is the answer.
