What Questions to Ask Before Using an AI Prescribing Service

Use these questions to check who is responsible for care, what the AI does, whether remote prescribing is allowed for your medication and location, and how the service handles follow-up, data, and costs.

Before using an online prescribing service that involves AI, find out which clinician is responsible for your care, what the AI contributes, whether the medication can be prescribed remotely where you live, and how the service handles follow-up, privacy, and total cost. Ask for clear answers about the specific service and your location before sharing health or payment information.

Who is clinically responsible for my care?

There should be an identifiable clinician responsible for the prescribing decision, not just an app or automated recommendation. Ask:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Who reviews my information and makes the prescribing decision?
  • Where is that clinician licensed, and are they licensed to treat patients in my location?
  • How can I contact the clinician or care team after the appointment?
  • What information will be reviewed, including my current medicines, allergies, medical history, and possible contraindications?

Find out what happens if your history is incomplete, details conflict, or the service cannot make a recommendation with confidence. A service should explain its limitations and when it will direct you to in-person or urgent care.

What does the AI do, and what does a clinician review?

“AI prescribing” can describe different roles for software. Ask what the system actually generates or recommends, what information it uses, and what a clinician independently checks before a prescription is issued. In particular, ask whether the clinician can review the basis for the recommendation rather than only approve a result.

The FDA’s clinical decision support guidance discusses factors such as whether software provides a specific treatment course and whether a health professional can independently review the basis for a recommendation. It is a framework for understanding software functions, not evidence that every service marketed as AI is FDA-cleared, FDA-approved, or endorsed. Read the FDA’s clinical decision support guidance.

Can this service prescribe the medication I need where I live?

Do not assume an online service can prescribe every medication in every state. Eligibility and prescribing requirements depend on the medication, the clinician, and your location. Ask whether the service can prescribe the specific medicine you are seeking, what evaluation is required, and whether any follow-up is necessary.

What is the total cost, and how can I verify the service?

Ask for the full price before submitting payment details. Check whether the quoted amount includes the consultation, medication, membership, delivery, and insurance costs, and ask about cancellation charges, recurring billing, and how to cancel. A low consultation price may not represent the total cost of getting and continuing treatment.

Research an unfamiliar provider and verify who you are dealing with before sharing personal or financial information. Confirm that the service lists a real way to contact it and that its stated clinical and privacy practices answer your questions.
