To see what a particular update changes, read Sony’s current release notes, check which consoles and games they cover, then verify the version installed on your own PS5.
What changed in the latest PS5 system update?
Sony’s Latest system software update for PS5 consoles page is the place to check current release notes. The available dated example here is Sony’s March 16, 2026 update; that date-specific example does not establish which release is latest on October 7, 2026. Check the live page for the current notes before relying on a feature description.

That March 16, 2026 announcement described broad support for an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a feature for PS5 Pro. Sony said the rollout would happen in phases and that support and results could vary by game. Senior Director of Content Communications Sid Shuman described the update as delivering “enhanced image stability, improved clarity in fine details, and more consistent performance across supported titles.” Those are Sony’s claims about that update, not independent test results or a guarantee for every game.
More generally, Sony says system software updates may add features, improve usability, and improve security. Updates, including security updates, are issued from time to time and are necessary for proper console functioning. Sony recommends installing the latest version promptly; some apps or content may require an update. A general note about stability or usability does not establish that a particular game will perform better.

How to read PS5 release notes
Read the notes for the specific release rather than inferring changes from a headline. For each feature, identify the console model it applies to, whether availability is phased, and whether it requires support from a particular game. A capability limited to PS5 Pro or supported titles should not be described as a change for every PS5 owner.
- Scope: Does the note apply to all PS5 consoles, a particular model, or only supported games?
- Availability: Does Sony describe a phased rollout rather than immediate availability to everyone?
- Type of change: Is it a new feature, a usability or security improvement, or a general system note?
- Evidence: Treat performance or image-quality language as Sony’s description unless independent testing is cited.
Release notes tell you what Sony says changed; they do not necessarily promise a visible difference for every user. Check the update date and the conditions attached to each feature before deciding whether it affects your console or a game you play.

How to check your PS5 system software version
- On the console, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
- Check the displayed version. Sony says that “Up to date” under the version means the latest version is installed.
- To check for an update manually, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then choose Update System Software if that option is available.
Automatic and manual update options
Online updating is the ordinary route. Sony also documents automatic downloading and installation while the console is in Rest Mode. A USB update is an official manual fallback, not a requirement for routine online updates.
| Route | What you need to do | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic in Rest Mode | Under Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, enable Download Update Files Automatically and Install Update Files Automatically. The console must stay connected to the internet for Rest Mode updating. | Convenient when you want the console to download and install updates automatically. |
| Manual online update | Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and choose Update System Software when available. | When you want to check and initiate an update yourself. |
| Manual USB update | Use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive, create a PS5/UPDATE folder, and save Sony’s official update file there as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Start the console in Safe Mode and choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device. |
A manual fallback, including when download problems persist. Sony specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file; this is not a fixed size for every update. |
Use Sony’s official update instructions and files for the USB procedure. The USB route requires a computer to prepare the drive; Sony’s instructions do not establish that it is faster or safer than updating online.

What to do if a PS5 update is stuck
- Open Downloads/Uploads, select the update, and open its error information.
- Try the download again as Sony advises.
- If the download fails repeatedly, follow Sony’s documented computer-and-USB update procedure above.
Do not turn off the console during installation: Sony warns that interrupting the process can damage it. Use only Sony’s official update files and documented methods; Sony warns that unofficial files or methods can affect console operation and warranty or repair service.
Reinstalling system software is different from installing an update and is a more consequential recovery step. Sony says reinstalling deletes all data on the console, so do not treat it as a routine update or proceed without understanding that consequence. See Sony’s system software support instructions for the appropriate procedure.
