What position does Florian Wirtz play?
UEFA lists Wirtz simply as a midfielder, a broad roster designation rather than a detailed tactical role. In match terms, he is best described as an attacking midfielder or playmaker with freedom to move across the attacking line. How his role has changed by club and period
Bayer Leverkusen: left-sided No. 10 with room to roam
In Liverpool FC’s June 20, 2025 profile of his 2024–25 season, Wirtz is described as playing mostly as an inverted winger on the left while drifting across the pitch like a No. 10. The profile says 45% of his open-play touches came on the left side of the opposition half. Liverpool FC’s profile also notes that Xabi Alonso sometimes used him as a false nine during Leverkusen’s 2023–24 season; that was a tactical variation, not his defining role.

In Alonso’s 3-4-2-1, Premier League analysis characterizes Wirtz as the left-sided No. 10, free to roam across the final third. The left lane gave him a route to cut inside, while Leverkusen’s possession dominance generally let him stay advanced rather than repeatedly dropping deep to help build up. The Premier League’s analysis of his role and Liverpool’s description focus on different aspects of the same flexible job.
Liverpool: early 2025–26 use as a central No. 10
An analysis of Liverpool’s early 2025–26 usage describes Wirtz as the main No. 10 in a 4-2-3-1. Depending on the surrounding attackers, he received closer to the right flank and sometimes dropped toward midfield or the center-backs to help progress the ball. That could take him away from the left half-space and final-third areas where he had often been effective at Leverkusen. The Premier League analysis is a description of that phase, not a permanent Liverpool assignment.

BBC Sport’s October 3, 2025 tactical analysis likewise observed that deeper build-up duties could leave him farther from goal. Against compact defenses, a central receiver between the lines may have little time or room to turn. BBC Sport’s analysis identifies that as a challenge of the role and the opposition shape, rather than evidence that Wirtz cannot play centrally.

Liverpool: later 2025–26 analysis shows more varied positions
A later Premier League analysis describes Wirtz appearing as a No. 10, on either wing and as a false nine. It says he began finding more advanced and wider pockets instead of operating as often in a crowded central channel. In the article’s specified comparison, central touches between halfway and the 18-yard box accounted for 37% of his touches in his first 15 Premier League appearances and 27% from the Spurs match onward; left-side touches between halfway and the byline rose from 14% to 32%. These are sample-specific figures, not season-long or permanent positional rates. The Premier League’s later analysis also reports that, over its “last six matches” comparison period, his completed dribbles rose from 14 in his first 15 matches to 16; passes per 90 from 45.60 to 73.80; shots from 1.61 to 2.52; and touches in the opposition box from 5.02 to 7.92. The source links those shifts to greater involvement and freedom across the attacking midfield zone, not to a universal formation rule.

Where is Wirtz most effective?
Wirtz tends to be most effective when he can receive with separation from a defender, turn toward goal and advance into space. BBC Sport’s tactical correspondent highlights his ability to carry at opponents, use feints or changes of pace, and then pass or create. Those actions are easier when a teammate finds him before pressure arrives than when he receives with a defender already tight behind him.
- Left-side access: Starting or receiving on the left gives him a route into the half-space and room to cut inside. He can then drift centrally rather than remain fixed on the flank.
- Forward-facing receptions: Space to receive on the half-turn lets him attack the defense with a carry, draw pressure or combine near the box.
- Useful spacing around him: If Wirtz must drop deep to help progress the ball and also supply the final-third threat, he has less time near goal. A teammate taking on some build-up work can allow him to stay higher, though no single teammate or formation guarantees that outcome.
- Room to move across the attack: The later Premier League analysis suggests that finding pockets across the attacking zone, including wider areas, can be more useful than being confined to a congested central channel.
He can still threaten centrally, particularly when a transition or a stretched defense opens a lane between the lines. The problem is not central positioning itself; it is receiving there without the time or space to turn and act.

Is Wirtz a No. 10 or a winger?
He can perform both functions. “No. 10” is the clearest description of his playmaking responsibility: linking midfield to attack, finding space between lines and creating chances. “Inverted winger” describes how he has often accessed that work, particularly from the left, before moving inside. He has also been used as a false nine, but that role should be treated as an option rather than his default position.
For Liverpool, the more useful question is whether his role gives him access to space and forward-facing receptions without requiring too much deep build-up work. A central No. 10 position can suit him when he has room between the lines; a left-sided or wider starting point can help when the middle is congested. The tactical analyses describe changing usage, not a proven universally best formation.

His impact includes pressing as well as creation
Wirtz’s value is not limited to possession. Liverpool FC’s June 2025 profile says he led the Bundesliga in 2024–25 with 1.25 high turnovers per 90 and led Leverkusen with 679 pressures across nine Champions League appearances that season. These are league- and competition-specific figures reported by the club, not a general measure of every season or team.
The same profile reports 2.1 open-play chances per 90 in the 2024–25 Bundesliga, the most among Leverkusen players, and says he had created 253 open-play chances since his Bundesliga debut in May 2020, with only Thomas Müller ahead over that timeframe. It also states that he recorded 44 league goal involvements across the previous two seasons among players under 23 in Europe’s top five divisions, a total only one player in that group exceeded. These figures help explain why teams want him involved high up the pitch, but they do not establish that one position alone produces his output. Liverpool FC’s profile attributes to Wirtz a preference for taking responsibility and wanting the ball to resolve situations. BBC Sport reports his comments to Sky Sports Germany that his pressing and running demand substantial energy, and that fitness and familiarity would help him sustain his on-ball actions.
What to look for when judging his position
- Where does he receive the ball—left half-space, central channel, or a wider lane?
- Can he turn and face forward, or is he immediately pressed with his back to goal?
- Is he free to stay near the box, or regularly pulled deep to support build-up?
- Do teammates leave him pockets to drift into and combine from?
- Does his pressing workload leave enough energy for his creative actions?
UEFA’s profile offers only the broad “Midfielder” label, while club and league tactical analyses describe roles that vary by team and period. The available analyses do not establish one permanent position or prove that a particular formation causes a specific level of output; current Liverpool usage may change with selection and tactics.
