A Linux remote monitoring and management (RMM) agent can report only what its collection method is configured and able to observe. Polling reads a snapshot of current state; Linux Audit records selected events under configured rules; and eBPF programs emit selected information from supported kernel hooks to a userspace consumer. None of those labels alone proves that an agent sees every process, file action, or network event. Its actual coverage depends on the product version, configuration, kernel support, permissions, and delivery path.
What does “visibility” mean for a Linux RMM agent?
Visibility is the result of a collection path: a mechanism obtains information, applies its scope and filters, and makes the result available to the agent or its management service. A host may expose information that the agent never reads; an event may be collected but not retained or forwarded.

It helps to distinguish state from events. State describes what is present when queried, such as the processes visible in procfs at that moment. Event telemetry records selected activity as it occurs. A snapshot is not a history, and event collection is not automatically proof of durable delivery.

A polling agent periodically reads interfaces such as /proc, which exposes process and kernel information. Its view reflects what those interfaces show at read time; polling does not create a transaction log of activity between reads. See the Linux kernel’s procfs documentation.

For example, if a process starts and exits between two polls, neither snapshot may include it. The same sampling limitation can apply to a transient connection or brief file activity, depending on what the agent queries. That absence from snapshots does not prove the activity did not happen.
Coverage also depends on the interval and workload. Even tracing that observes system calls only covers paths exercised by the workload under observation; the kernel’s workload-tracing guide cautions against treating observed activity as universal coverage.

What can Linux Audit and auditd see?
Linux Audit is a framework, not just the auditd daemon. The kernel generates records for activity selected by audit rules; userspace components can log records locally or forward them, and tools can inspect and process the records. The Linux Audit subsystem README describes that kernel and userspace architecture.

Audit does not mean “record everything by default.” The audit.rules(7) manual describes control, file, and syscall rules. Syscall rules are evaluated against system calls made across the system, so their scope can be broad; the manual warns that syscall rules affect performance and notes that combining syscalls where appropriate can reduce that cost.

Recording and delivery depend on system health
Audit configuration includes controls for the kernel backlog queue, failure behavior, and event rate. Those settings affect what happens under pressure; they are operational tradeoffs, not universal guarantees that every relevant event will be retained or delivered. For an RMM deployment, check both the installed rules and the health of the daemon and any forwarding path.
What can eBPF see?
eBPF is a programmable Linux mechanism for runtime instrumentation and extension. The kernel documents attachment areas that include networking, tracing, and Linux Security Module hooks in its eBPF Userspace API documentation. An agent can use an eBPF program to observe or act on information available at a supported attachment point, but it must load an applicable program, have the necessary permissions, attach successfully, capture the needed context, and emit the information it wants to collect.

Therefore, eBPF is flexible rather than omniscient. Program type, hook availability, kernel compatibility, permissions, and the program’s own filters define its practical scope. The BPF syscall documentation covers program attachment and querying attached programs for supported attach types; these capabilities do not establish what any particular RMM agent has attached on a host.

Kernel events still need a userspace consumer
One event-transfer option is the BPF ring buffer. A kernel program writes selected data to it, and a userspace consumer handles that data. The ring-buffer documentation describes the mechanism; the program’s choices, buffer capacity, and consumer behavior all shape what reaches the next stage. An agent’s use of eBPF does not by itself guarantee that every event is retained, processed, or forwarded.

How do the three collection models compare?
| Question | Polling | Linux Audit / auditd | eBPF |
|---|---|---|---|
| How is information collected? | Repeated reads of exposed state | Kernel records for configured audit rules; userspace daemon logs or forwards them | Programs attached to selected kernel hooks emit chosen data |
| Can it catch short-lived activity? | It can miss activity between samples | It can record activity if the relevant event is enabled and the system is functioning | It can observe activity if an applicable hook and program are available, attached, and emitting |
| What defines its scope? | Queried data and sampling interval | Audit rules and control settings | Program type, hook, code or filter logic, and permissions |
| What should be checked in an implementation? | Polling interval, procfs access, and snapshot semantics | Loaded rules, backlog, failure and rate settings, daemon health, and forwarding | Kernel and program compatibility, privileges, attach status, buffer health, and consumer behavior |
| What claim should be avoided? | “The agent continuously sees all activity” | “auditd records everything by default” | “eBPF sees everything with no loss or setup” |
This comparison describes the mechanisms, not a ranking. An RMM product may combine them, and its label does not establish the coverage of its deployed configuration.
How can you verify a named Linux RMM agent?
Ask the vendor or inspect the host configuration for concrete implementation details:
- Which state interfaces does the agent read, and how often does it poll?
- Which audit rules are installed? Does the agent rely on the host’s existing audit configuration or change it?
- Which eBPF program types and attachment points does it use, and which kernel releases and configurations are supported?
- What capabilities or privileges does collection require, and can those permissions be narrowed?
- How are events filtered and transferred to userspace? Can administrators see buffer pressure, dropped events, permission failures, and unsupported hooks?
- How are records persisted and forwarded? What happens during a network outage, an agent restart, or a high event volume?
- Does the product documentation distinguish sampled inventory or health state from event-level telemetry?
The Linux mechanisms explain what is technically possible, but they cannot establish the behavior of an unnamed RMM product. A product-specific conclusion requires its release, supported distributions and kernels, and active configuration.
