A Pixel screen saver is a configurable display that can appear when your phone is charging and its screen times out. Depending on your setup, it can show a clock, photos, home controls, Pixel Weather, or content from compatible apps. Always-on Display is a separate feature for showing time and other information on the idle lock screen. Choose a screen saver for a charging display you can customize; choose Always-on Display for information visible while the phone is idle.
What a Pixel screen saver does
A screen saver turns an idle, charging Pixel into a display for selected content. Google lists clocks, photos, colorful backgrounds, home controls, Pixel Weather, and content from compatible apps among the possible options. Which choices appear depends on your phone, Android version, and setup; not every Pixel necessarily offers every type.

The feature is especially useful when a phone is left charging on a desk or bedside table. Rather than displaying the regular screen you last used, it can show the content you selected. It is not the same as keeping an app open: the screen saver has its own settings and appears after the display times out under the conditions you choose.
Think of it as an idle display with selectable content, not as a guarantee that the phone will remain lit indefinitely. It has its own rules for when to appear, and in a dim room it can change to a low-light clock or turn the screen off, depending on the available setting. Google says the default dim-environment behavior transitions to a low-light clock.

How to set up the screen saver
- Open the screen saver controls. Go to Settings → Display & touch → Screen saver.
- Enable it. Turn on Use screen saver.
- Choose what appears. Select an available screen saver type, such as a clock, photos, or another supported option. The available choices vary by device and software.
- Choose when it appears. Under When to show, select While charging or While upright and charging. Google also documents a setting to restrict the screen saver to wireless charging.
- Preview it. Tap Use screen saver to preview the selected experience.
- Set dim-room behavior if needed. Manage the low-light behavior in the screen saver settings. Google says the default behavior in a dim environment transitions to a low-light clock; depending on the available settings, the screen can instead turn off.
The two main “When to show” choices let you decide whether charging alone is enough or whether the phone must also be upright. If you choose the upright-and-charging condition, a phone charging flat on a desk would not meet that condition. A wireless-charging restriction adds another requirement: the phone must be charging wirelessly as well as meeting the selected show condition. Check the wording and choices on your own phone, since settings may differ.
Previewing is useful before relying on the phone as a desk or bedside display: it lets you see the selected content without waiting for the normal timeout and charging conditions. If the preview or content choices do not match Google’s instructions, first check the options that your device actually provides rather than assuming that every Pixel supports every screen saver type.
Google notes that some screen saver instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. If a label or option in this path is missing, your phone’s model or Android version may not expose the same controls.

How to make the screen saver start
Leave the display on and let it time out while the phone meets the screen saver’s charging condition. Pressing the Power button to turn the screen off does not start the screen saver. That difference matters: screen timeout is the point at which the idle display can give way to the screen saver, while manually switching off the screen bypasses that transition.

To change how long the phone waits before timing out, go to Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout. Google’s current guidance lists 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes, along with Adaptive timeout and Screen attention options. These settings control when the display times out; they do not replace the screen saver’s separate choice of when it should show.
In practice, there are two separate checks: the display has to reach its timeout, and the phone has to satisfy the screen saver’s selected show condition. For example, if “While upright and charging” is selected, letting the display time out while the phone is not upright will not satisfy that choice. Likewise, if you press Power to switch the display off, waiting longer will not make the screen saver start; the phone has already skipped the timeout transition it needs.
Screen saver vs. Always-on Display
Both features relate to an idle phone, but they answer different needs. A screen saver is a selectable idle display experience with charging conditions. Always-on Display is configured separately and provides at-a-glance information on the idle lock screen. Google’s setup guidance treats them as distinct settings rather than two names for the same feature.

|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | A customizable display experience when the phone is idle under chosen charging conditions. | At-a-glance time and information on the idle lock screen. |
| Possible content | Clock, photos, home controls, Pixel Weather, and compatible-app content, depending on device and setup. | Time and information. Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL can also show lock-screen wallpaper with the date and time when the wallpaper option is enabled. |
| Where it is configured | Settings → Display & touch → Screen saver. | A separate Always-on display setting under Display & touch; on supported models, the wallpaper option is nested there. |
| Charging condition | Offers choices including While charging and While upright and charging; wireless-only use is also documented. | Google describes it as an idle lock-screen feature, not as a screen saver with those charging-condition choices. |
| Dim-room behavior and battery | Can transition to a low-light clock or turn off the screen in a dim environment, depending on the setting. | Google lists turning off Always-on Display as a way to save battery, but does not quantify how its battery use compares with screen saver use. |
The table describes the functional difference in Google’s setup guidance. It does not mean every Pixel model exposes identical settings or content. The most useful distinction is what each feature is meant to show and how it starts: the screen saver has selectable content and charging conditions, while Always-on Display is a separate idle-lock-screen option.

On Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, Google documents a specific Always-on Display option to show the lock-screen wallpaper along with the date and time. That is a model-specific documented option, not a general description of Always-on Display on all Pixels. If you have another model, look for the controls available on that phone rather than expecting the wallpaper choice to appear.
Which setting should you use?
- Use a screen saver if you want a chosen display—such as a clock, photos, or home controls—while the phone is charging, and your model offers the content you want.
- Use Always-on Display if your priority is seeing time and information on the idle lock screen rather than setting up a charging-triggered display.
- Use both selectively if each serves a different situation for you. They have separate settings, so changing one is not the same as changing the other.
- Turn off Always-on Display to pursue battery savings if that is your goal; Google recommends this as a battery-saving measure. Google does not provide a percentage or a direct screen-saver-versus-AOD battery comparison, so there is no supported figure for how much one saves over the other.
For example, a person who wants photos or a larger clock while their phone charges can set up a screen saver and choose its charging conditions. Someone who mainly wants time and information on the idle lock screen should look at Always-on Display. These are functional choices, not a claim that one feature is universally better or more battery-efficient.
On Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, Google documents an option to show lock-screen wallpaper on Always-on Display along with the date and time. Do not assume that wallpaper option is available on other Pixel models.

Google documents custom screen savers when a phone is charging with a Pixelsnap Charger or a first- or second-generation Pixel Stand and is not in use. The listed possibilities include a clock, photos, and home controls. This can make a compatible charging stand useful for a desk or bedside setup, but a stand is not required to enable the screen saver generally.

A stand is an optional way to create a charging-display setup, not a prerequisite for the screen saver. The screen saver’s general setup is in Settings, and its show conditions determine when it appears. The stand context is specifically useful if you want to leave the phone charging and not in use while it displays selected content.
Before choosing a charging accessory, check that it is compatible with your exact phone. The fact that Google names a charger or stand as a supported setup does not establish compatibility with every Pixel model or accessory combination. No particular stand is necessary just to turn on the screen saver, so decide whether the charging arrangement is useful for your space before buying one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common reasons it may not appear
- The screen was switched off manually: Use the screen timeout instead; pressing Power to turn off the screen prevents the screen saver from starting.
- The phone is not in a selected charging state: Check When to show and confirm that the phone is charging in the way your selection requires. If wireless-only use is enabled, a different charging method will not meet that restriction.
- The phone has not timed out yet: Wait for the timeout interval or adjust it in Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout.
- The chosen content is unavailable: Screen saver types depend on model, Android version, and compatible apps. Select a content type that is actually offered in your phone’s settings.
- The displayed settings do not match these labels: Google says some guidance applies to Android 14 and later, and controls can vary by device and version.
If those checks look right, use the preview option to confirm the selected screen saver itself is configured. Then review the charging condition and the phone’s orientation: the screen saver can be enabled but still not appear if the phone has not reached timeout or does not meet the condition you chose.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Pixel screen saver run only while the phone is upright or charging wirelessly?
Google documents “While upright and charging” as a show choice and also documents an option to restrict use to wireless charging. The exact controls can vary by model and Android version.
Is Always-on Display the same as a Pixel screen saver?
No. A screen saver has selectable content and charging conditions; Always-on Display is configured separately for at-a-glance information on the idle lock screen.
Does a screen saver save more battery than Always-on Display?
Google recommends turning off Always-on Display as a way to save battery, but does not publish a direct battery-use comparison or a savings percentage for screen saver versus Always-on Display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo I need a Pixel Stand or Pixelsnap Charger to use a screen saver?
No. Google documents custom screen savers with a Pixelsnap Charger or first- or second-generation Pixel Stand when the phone is charging and not in use, but a stand is not required to enable the screen saver generally.
Can every Pixel show wallpaper on Always-on Display?
Google documents the lock-screen wallpaper option for Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. Do not assume the option is available on other models.
The Bottom Line
A Pixel screen saver is a configurable idle display that appears after timeout under selected charging conditions; Always-on Display is a separate feature for at-a-glance idle lock-screen information. Choose based on what you want to see and how you use your phone, and check your model’s settings because available content and controls vary.
