What PiFM Can and Cannot Detect in Semiconductor Defect Analysis

PiFM can pair surface topography with nanoscale spectroscopic contrast to help identify selected semiconductor particles. Its reported small-particle examples do not set a universal detection limit or establish electrical impact.

Photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) can map surface topography and add nanoscale spectroscopic contrast that may help identify the material in a small semiconductor-surface particle. It is best treated as a targeted follow-up to methods such as SEM/EDX—not as a universal defect detector, a test of electrical activity, or a replacement for production screening.

What PiFM measures

PiFM combines scanning-probe force detection with optical excitation. A sharp AFM-type probe concentrates the optical near field at its tip, locally polarizing the sample. The resulting photo-induced force is detected through cantilever motion and mapped as the probe scans. Depending on the measurement configuration, the signal can include dipole-related interactions and forces associated with photothermal processes.

That signal reports a local optical or photothermal response under particular tip–sample and measurement conditions. It is not a direct, universal readout of every structural or electrical property of a defect. A 2022 tutorial review by Abid Anjum Sifat, Junghoon Jahng, and Eric O. Potma describes PiFM as “a scan probe technique that offers images with spectroscopic contrast at a spatial resolution in the nanometer range.”

What PiFM can reveal about a surface defect

Whether a surface feature is present and what it looks like

Topographic imaging can show a particle or other surface feature and provide information about its shape and height. This answers a morphology question: where is the feature, and how does its surface profile differ from the surrounding wafer? It does not, by itself, establish the feature’s chemical identity.

Whether its material has a distinguishable spectral response

PiFM can provide spectroscopic contrast that helps distinguish materials, including cases where two particles look similar in a topographic image. Identification depends on obtaining an interpretable spectrum and comparing it with appropriate reference data. A spectral match is evidence for an identification, not an infallible answer independent of signal quality and measurement conditions.

Examples reported for semiconductor wafers

A Molecular Vista-sponsored AZoM application article published October 5, 2026, describes several wafer-surface demonstrations: a 15 nm Teflon particle distinguished from a quartz substrate; two visually similar particles identified as silica and polystyrene; and a 5 nm particle identified as polystyrene. The article reports comparison with reference FTIR spectra for particle identification.

These are specific application examples, not guaranteed performance thresholds. They show the kinds of surface-composition questions PiFM may help answer; they do not establish that every 5 nm particle, material, instrument, or defect can be detected or identified.

What PiFM cannot establish on its own

  • A universal minimum defect size: The reported 5 nm particle is one supplier-sponsored demonstration. A nominal or demonstrated spatial resolution, the ability to detect a signal, and confidence in identifying a material are different measures. Practical resolution also depends on configuration and scan conditions; a 2026 methods review discusses sub-10 nm capability, a practical constraint around 5 nm in common conditions, and specialized reports of sub-nanometre results. The most favorable specialized result should not be treated as routine semiconductor review performance.
  • Electrical activity or yield impact: A surface image and chemical contrast do not show, by themselves, whether a feature changes device operation or causes yield loss. Electrical qualification requires evidence beyond the force and optical/photothermal response described for PiFM.
  • The full subsurface composition of a device: PiFM is a scanning-probe surface measurement. A result from an exposed surface is not a complete cross-section or diagnosis of buried structures.
  • Definitive chemistry without a suitable spectrum and comparison: Material identification depends on interpretable spectral evidence and an appropriate reference. Report the match with its reference and measurement context rather than presenting it as certain regardless of conditions.
  • Fab-scale screening or guaranteed root-cause analysis: The cited application workflow presents PiFM as a targeted complement to SEM/EDX, not a replacement for higher-throughput review or a guarantee of defect root cause.

When to use PiFM alongside SEM/EDX

The choice depends on the question, the size and sampled volume of interest, the kind of chemical specificity needed, sample-damage considerations, throughput, and whether targeted follow-up is practical. In the semiconductor workflow described by the supplier-sponsored article, SEM/EDX is positioned for higher-throughput review of larger defects, while PiFM is used on selected small or organic particles when morphology or EDX does not adequately identify the material. That is a workflow example, not a rule that applies to every fab or sample.

Consideration PiFM in the described workflow SEM/EDX in the described workflow
Typical role Targeted follow-up on selected defects where nanoscale surface or spectroscopic contrast is useful. Higher-throughput review of larger defects.
Material information Local spectroscopic contrast may help distinguish materials; identification relies on interpretable spectra and comparison with references. Used in the workflow for elemental analysis; the cited article positions PiFM as follow-up when EDX does not adequately identify a material.
Throughput figure reported About two minutes per defect, or approximately 30 defects per hour, for the Vista 300 workflow described by the Molecular Vista-sponsored AZoM article; the estimate depends on coordinate accuracy. The same article claims an order-of-magnitude throughput advantage over Vista 300 ANDR. This is the article’s comparison, not an independently established universal benchmark.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How the reported wafer workflow is organized

The Molecular Vista-sponsored AZoM article describes a Vista 300 process that starts with a defect coordinate map, aligns the instrument to wafer fiducials, and visits selected coordinates for topography and PiF-IR spectra. The reported per-defect timing depends on accurate coordinates. This makes the workflow most relevant when a smaller set of mapped defects needs targeted characterization, rather than when every defect must be screened at the same rate.

For any application, interpret the result at the level the measurement supports: topography establishes surface morphology; a usable spectrum and reference comparison support a material identification; neither alone establishes electrical consequence, buried composition, or yield impact.

Evidence and scope

The foundational description of PiFM physics and implementations comes from Sifat, Jahng, and Potma’s peer-reviewed 2022 tutorial review. The semiconductor particle examples and workflow figures above come from a supplier-sponsored AZoM article by Molecular Vista published October 5, 2026, so its application claims and throughput comparison are attributed rather than presented as independent benchmarks. A 2026 methods review provides broader context on practical resolution and configuration effects. The available evidence does not establish a general semiconductor-fab defect-detection probability or production-line qualification for PiFM.
