To use a 240Hz display, you need a monitor that supports 240Hz at your chosen resolution and on the input you connect, plus a graphics-card output and cable that support that mode. To see close to 240 frames per second in a game, your PC must also render them; a 240Hz monitor alone does not guarantee 240 FPS.
What PC specs do you need for 240Hz gaming?
There is no universal “240Hz PC” specification. The hardware needed to reach 240 frames per second depends on the game, resolution, graphics settings, and the rest of the system. A demanding game at a high resolution can require substantially more graphics performance than a less demanding game at lower settings.

Choose a game, resolution, and settings first, then look for benchmarks for that exact combination when deciding whether a particular CPU and GPU can reach your frame-rate target. Without those details, naming one graphics card as suitable for all 240Hz gaming would be misleading.

Refresh rate is not frame rate
- Refresh rate is how often the monitor can update its image. A 240Hz panel can refresh up to 240 times per second in a supported mode.
- Frame rate is how many frames the PC renders in the game. The game and PC determine this, not the monitor.
A monitor can display a 240Hz signal while a game runs below 240 FPS. The display’s high refresh capability is still a separate property from the game’s rendered frame rate.

What cable do you need for a 240Hz monitor?
Use a cable and port combination that supports the monitor’s 240Hz mode at the resolution you intend to play. There is no single cable recommendation that applies to every 240Hz monitor: check the model’s specifications or manual for the supported mode on each input.
For example, HP lists its OMEN 27qs as a 2560×1440 monitor with a maximum refresh rate of 240Hz, one DisplayPort 1.4 input, and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. MSI documents up to 240Hz at 2560×1440 over HDMI and DisplayPort for the MAG 272QP QD-OLED X24, which has a DisplayPort 1.4a input. These examples show why the exact monitor specification matters; another model may support different modes or inputs. See HP’s OMEN 27qs specifications and MSI’s MAG 272QP QD-OLED X24 specifications.

BenQ ZOWIE advises using an HDMI 2.0 or DP 1.2a cable in its instructions for 240Hz/360Hz support. Treat that as guidance for the relevant BenQ setup, not a universal rule that overrides the manual for another display. BenQ ZOWIE’s setup instructions also cover selecting the refresh rate in Windows or NVIDIA Control Panel.

Before buying a replacement, check the monitor’s box contents and product specifications. MSI lists a DisplayPort cable among the accessories for the MAG 272QP QD-OLED X24. MSI’s accessory listing is specific to that model; included accessories can differ between monitors.

Can HDMI run 240Hz?
Yes, HDMI can support 240Hz on some monitors, but the answer depends on the monitor’s supported resolution and mode over HDMI. MSI documents its cited QHD model as supporting up to 240Hz at 2560×1440 over HDMI, while HP lists HDMI 2.0 inputs on its QHD 240Hz OMEN 27qs. Do not infer that every HDMI port or cable will work at 240Hz: verify the mode for the exact monitor and connection in its specifications or manual.
How to set up 240Hz on a PC
- Check the monitor mode. Confirm that the exact model supports 240Hz at your chosen resolution and that the input you plan to use supports it.
- Connect the GPU to the monitor. Use a graphics-card output that supports the mode, with a suitable cable. Check the monitor manual for any input-specific requirements.
- Select the refresh rate in the operating system or GPU settings. BenQ ZOWIE’s instructions point users to Windows or NVIDIA Control Panel, depending on the graphics card. The exact menus can vary by system.
- Confirm the game’s performance separately. Check the game’s frame rate at your chosen resolution and settings; the selected 240Hz display mode does not ensure the PC renders 240 FPS.

Is adaptive sync required for 240Hz?
No. A 240Hz panel and adaptive sync are different features. Adaptive sync is an optional compatibility feature that synchronizes the monitor’s refresh behavior with the GPU’s frame output when the display, graphics device, connection, and driver support it.
AMD says FreeSync requires a compatible monitor, graphics device, and current driver, and works over HDMI and DisplayPort. AMD’s FreeSync information describes those requirements.

Quick Recap
What to verify before choosing a setup
- The monitor supports 240Hz at the resolution you want.
- The specific input and GPU output support that resolution-and-refresh combination.
- The cable meets the monitor’s requirements; check whether one is already included.
- Your CPU and GPU can reach the target frame rate in your chosen game and settings, based on benchmarks for that setup.
- If you want adaptive sync, the monitor, GPU, connection, and driver are compatible.
