NPR ended comments on NPR.org story pages on August 23, 2016. References to “NPR’s comment section” therefore describe a discontinued feature on those pages—not a current, site-wide policy for every NPR program, member station or affiliate.
What happened to NPR.org comments?
NPR announced that it would discontinue comments on its story pages effective August 23, 2016. At the time, NPR said it wanted to focus on other ways of building community and audience engagement. A public-radio station reproduced the announcement in its 2016 notice.

Scott Montgomery, then NPR’s managing editor for digital news, explained the decision by saying “the comment sections on NPR.org stories are not providing a useful experience for the vast majority of our users.” That was NPR’s stated rationale, as reported contemporaneously by Current; it does not establish that all comments were harmful or that moderation alone prompted the change.

Does that mean every NPR-related page has no comments?
No. NPR.org is distinct from member-station and affiliate websites, which may set their own rules. StateImpact, for example, has published community guidelines, while StateImpact Pennsylvania separately announced that it would end comments, as described in its announcement. These examples show why a policy on one site should not be assumed to apply to another.

- If an older article or discussion mentions NPR’s comment section, it is referring to the former NPR.org story-page feature.
- Do not infer that a member station or affiliate has the same comment policy as NPR.org; check who operates the page and what rules it displays.
- The change concerns a website feature. It does not, by itself, establish a need for parental-control software or provide age-specific safety guidance.
