“Out for delivery” usually means a carrier expects the package to reach you that day, but the exact event behind the status differs by carrier. It is not proof that the parcel is at your door, and available evidence does not show that the status is wrong for most carriers. A 2023 audit found substantial tracking mismatches in a sample of USPS packages, but it cannot establish an error rate for USPS as a whole or for other carriers.
What “out for delivery” means by carrier
The status signals a delivery-stage event or expectation. The carriers describe that stage differently:

These are carrier-defined meanings and expectations, not independent confirmation of a parcel’s precise live location. An estimated delivery window is also not necessarily a guarantee; rely on a guarantee only when the carrier identifies the service as guaranteed.

Can an “out for delivery” notification be wrong?
Yes. A scan can fail to reflect where a package actually is, or when an event happened. The clearest evidence here is a 2023 audit by the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General (USPS OIG), which examined a sample of 500 packages. Tracking messages for 318 packages—64 percent of that sample—did not accurately reflect the observed location, time, and/or date. Those figures describe the audit sample, not all USPS packages or current USPS performance. The audit also does not establish that most carriers have inaccurate notifications: no comparable independent accuracy figures for UPS, FedEx, and Amazon are provided by these sources. The OIG concluded, “The Postal Service could improve its tracking messaging to provide more accurate, useful information to customers.”
Why might USPS tracking not match the package?
The USPS OIG identified missing package scans and system programming that can report anticipated movement through the network instead of the package’s observed location. It recommended clearer descriptions for missing scan events and for statuses such as “Out for Delivery” and “In Transit.” USPS OIG audit

Those explanations come from a USPS-specific audit. They should not be assumed to describe the internal tracking systems of UPS, FedEx, or Amazon.

What to do if your package has not arrived
- Open the carrier’s own tracking page. Review the latest scan and any delivery window or instructions. For an Amazon order, check Your Orders.
- Allow for the carrier’s stated delivery period. “Out for delivery” indicates a delivery-stage expectation, but the status alone does not confirm arrival. For USPS, its published guidance says to submit a service request if the package has not arrived after one full postal business day following the scan.
- Follow the carrier’s next step if delivery is missed. UPS says it will try again the next business day when a package marked out for delivery cannot be delivered. For other carriers, use the instructions in the current tracking details or on the linked official help page.
