What Objects Can Acoustic Levitation Hold, and How Much Weight Can It Support?

Acoustic levitation can suspend drops, particles and other objects, but a typical standing-wave setup supports only a few milligrams. Specialized methods have different limits.

Acoustic levitation can suspend liquid drops, bubbles and small solid objects, including particles, electronic components and—in specialized experiments—insects, cardboard and steel spheres. A 2026 review puts the typical maximum mass for a standing-wave levitator at only a few milligrams. That is a guide to one common design, not a universal limit: other acoustic levitation methods and custom apparatus have held different objects, and there is no established maximum weight for the field as a whole.

What objects can acoustic levitation hold?

The technique uses sound to create acoustic radiation forces that counter gravity and trap matter in a stable region of a sound field. Published demonstrations cover a range of materials and shapes; the method and apparatus matter as much as the object category.

  • Liquids: water and other liquid droplets, viscous gels and soap bubbles.
  • Small solids: particles, electronic components such as a ceramic capacitor, and steel spheres.
  • Lightweight or irregular samples: cardboard and a 50 mm expanded-polystyrene sphere have been reported in specialized setups.
  • Living samples: research demonstrations have included insects and manipulation of cells.

These examples do not mean that an ordinary tabletop levitator can hold each object—or anything of similar size or weight. A 2026 review describes the 50 mm sphere as levitated using three 25 kHz transducers arranged in a tripod, with vertical and horizontal stability. It also catalogs examples from specialized configurations; they should not be treated as a capacity specification for a basic standing-wave device. Advanced Functional Materials review (2026)

How much weight can acoustic levitation support?

For conventional standing-wave levitation, a 2026 review describes maximum supported mass as typically on the order of a few milligrams. The acoustic force must be strong enough to balance the object’s weight while keeping it trapped. The figure is an approximate description of typical standing-wave systems, not a universal ceiling across all acoustic levitators. The cited sources do not establish one heaviest-object record or a maximum weight applicable to every method. Advanced Functional Materials review (2026)

Mass is not the only consideration. Size, shape, density and stability affect whether an object can be held. A large object made from very low-density expanded polystyrene may weigh little, while a smaller dense object may demand more force. When evaluating a demonstration or device, distinguish a stable hold from a brief movement, and look for the object’s mass and dimensions as well as the levitation method.

Why the levitation method changes the answer

Standing-wave levitators

A common single-axis arrangement uses a sound emitter and reflector to form a standing wave with pressure nodes and antinodes. The object’s density and compressibility influence where it is trapped. For this configuration, a review gives an approximate half-wavelength size limit for the stable potential well. Treat that as a rule of thumb for a particular geometry, not a universal boundary: specialized arrangements have levitated objects that do not fit a simple size rule.

Specialized acoustic fields

Near-field, far-field, vortex and phased-array systems can shape or strengthen the forces in different ways. A 2013 study reported contactless transport of droplets and particles in air, including elongated objects with a characteristic length greater than the acoustic wavelength. That result demonstrates why object size alone cannot predict whether a setup can levitate or move something; geometry, field design and whether the object is held stably all matter. What droplet-size figures do—and do not—tell you

Droplets must be supported against gravity without the acoustic force overwhelming surface tension and breaking them apart. In one 24 kHz, air-based study, the authors calculated theoretical maximum radii of about 2.7 mm for water and 1.6 mm for hydrocarbons under the study’s stated conditions. These are predictions for droplet stability in that setup, not experimentally established universal size limits for acoustic levitation or limits for solid objects. PNAS study (2013)

  • ✨ See Ultrasound in a Compact Device! Using the principle of 40 kHz ultrasonic standing waves, this compact device creates a stable acoustic field that levitates 2–3 mm foam balls effortlessly—not magic, but a tangible physical phenomenon. Bring the complexity of acoustics into a mini lab you build yourself! Note: A 12V DC power supply is required and not included.
  • 🔧 Streamlined and Efficient, Focused on Core Functionality: Through meticulously optimized circuit design, only essential components are included—eliminating unnecessary complexity. This compact kit simplifies the soldering process, helping you focus on building and understanding the physics behind acoustic levitation.
  • 🎓 Learn While You Solder: After soldering, power up the kit. Two ultrasonic transducers emit 40 kHz high-frequency sound waves, creating a stable standing wave field in the air. The lightweight ball automatically settles at the node where sound pressure is lowest—here, the acoustic radiation force from the sound waves precisely balances gravity, achieving levitation!
  • 👨‍🏫 Visually Grasp Abstract Physics Concepts: Standing waves, nodes, acoustic radiation force… These textbook terms become tangible through this kit. As the ball floats steadily in mid-air, learners instantly grasp: Although ultrasound is inaudible, its energy becomes clearly visible through the levitating ball! Whether used for independent study, physics classroom demonstrations, or science exhibits, it ignites curiosity about acoustics and wave phenomena.
  • 🛡️ Professional Support, Ready to Assist: Detailed English instructions with illustrations are provided. We recommend scanning the QR code on the main product image or downloading the digital manual from Amazon’s “Product Guides & Documentation” page before soldering. If you encounter issues such as cold solder joints, incorrectly installed components, or no levitation after powering on, please contact us promptly—our R&D engineers will provide targeted technical guidance to support your assembly process.

Can acoustic levitation lift a person?

Human-scale lifting is not an established practical application in the cited educational account. It characterizes human levitation as theoretical and raises the much greater sound energy required at that scale, along with potential heating and unknown biological effects. Do not interpret small-object demonstrations as evidence that acoustic levitation can safely lift a person. Science ABC educational article (2021)
