It does not, by itself, prove Nintendo is better than PlayStation. The right choice depends on the games you want, where you play, your multiplayer needs and how much you prioritize visual performance.
What Switch 2 does differently
Switch 2 supports three play styles: in TV mode, the console sits in its dock and displays on a television; in handheld mode, the Joy-Con 2 controllers attach to the console; and tabletop mode lets you play with the console set up independently. Nintendo’s feature page describes these modes and their setup at Nintendo Switch 2 features.

This is a practical distinction for someone who wants to play on a commute, set the console on a table for a shared session, or connect it to a TV at home. The available information here does not establish a current, like-for-like comparison with PlayStation hardware, so treat this as a description of Switch 2’s design rather than a complete platform shootout.
How to weigh the display and performance specifications
Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch LCD screen capable of Full HD (1080p) handheld play. The manufacturer also lists TV output up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, with support for 120 fps at lower listed resolutions. These are Nintendo’s specifications for the 2025 product generation, not independent measurements of game performance. The feature page notes that 4K and other display features depend on supported games and equipment; HDR and VRR also have software, display and mode qualifications. Nintendo says TV-mode VRR support was added in a system update released September 10, 2026. See the feature details and technical specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
A maximum output figure does not tell you how a particular game runs or looks. If graphics and performance are central to your decision, compare verified specifications and performance information for the specific console and games you are considering rather than treating a platform’s headline resolution as a guarantee.
Which games matter most to you?
Start with the games you actually want to play. Make a short list of must-have franchises and specific titles, then check their availability for each platform. The available information does not establish a current PlayStation game-library comparison or verify individual game availability, so no universal claim about exclusives follows from it. A 2025 Reddit conversation surfaced “the exclusives” as one way readers frame this decision, but that is informal discussion, not representative survey evidence. The relevant question is which confirmed games you want to play.
What to know about Switch and Switch 2 compatibility
Nintendo says Switch 2 plays physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, while cautioning that some older titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a game you already own rather than assuming every original Switch title works perfectly.

Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
For TV play, Switch 2 is not compatible with the original Switch dock. Nintendo Support says to use the Switch 2 dock; see its dock compatibility guidance.
Choose around how you play with other people
Think about whether you mostly play alone, share a screen locally, or rely on online play. Switch 2’s three modes give it several ways to fit into a room or a portable routine, but they do not settle whether it suits your multiplayer needs better than another platform. Check the specific games and service terms you expect to use.
Nintendo states that online features including GameChat require internet access, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Camera features require a compatible camera, sold separately, and availability and terms vary. Confirm the current requirements with Nintendo before relying on a feature.

Storage and equipment to account for
Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage and identifies microSD Express as the expandable-memory standard. Its technical specifications provide the manufacturer’s details. If you plan to use original Switch accessories, check compatibility individually; the original Switch dock, in particular, cannot provide TV mode for Switch 2.
A practical way to decide between Switch 2 and PlayStation
- Choose your play location. If handheld and tabletop play are important, Switch 2’s documented three-mode design directly addresses that preference. If you primarily play on a TV, compare the actual games and features you plan to use on both platforms.
- Verify your must-have games. Check current platform availability for each title rather than relying on broad claims about exclusives.
- Match multiplayer to your routine. Identify whether you need local shared play, online play or particular communication features, and verify the relevant game and service requirements.
- Set your performance expectations. Use game-specific information and supported equipment details; do not infer every game’s performance from a console’s maximum output specification.
- Check what you already own. For original Switch games and accessories, confirm compatibility before buying or assuming they will work as before.
For PlayStation-side specifications, game availability and service terms, consult current Sony information before making a direct comparison. The evidence cited here establishes Nintendo’s Switch 2 features, not a full current comparison with PlayStation.
