NFL injury reports use separate labels for practice participation, expected game availability and the final game-day roster. “Limited” describes practice work; “questionable,” “doubtful” and “out” describe game status; “inactive” means the player is not among those active for that game. One label does not automatically determine the next.
Practice participation: did not participate, limited or full
These labels report how much a player took part in a practice session. They are not game-status predictions.

| Practice label | Meaning | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Did Not Participate | The player did not take part in that practice. | It describes that session only; check the game-status field separately. |
| Limited Participation | Less than 100% of the player’s normal repetitions, under the NFL’s formal definition. | It does not by itself mean the player is questionable, doubtful or out. |
| Full Participation | 100% of the player’s normal repetitions. | It does not guarantee the player will be active for the game. |
The NFL’s 2016 policy revision defined limited participation as “less than 100 percent of a player’s normal repetitions.” The league also separated practice participation from game status and removed “Out” as a practice label to avoid confusing it with the game-status term. NFL policy revision.

Game status: questionable, doubtful and out
Game-status terms communicate the club’s stated expectation about participation in the upcoming game. They do not describe a practice workload.
#1 Best Overall
| Game-status label | NFL meaning | Reader takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Questionable | It is uncertain whether the player will play. | It is neither a definite absence nor a promise that the player will play. |
| Doubtful | The player is unlikely to participate. | It signals a lower expectation of availability than questionable, but is not the final roster outcome. |
| Out | The player will not play. | This is the declared game absence. |
The NFL’s 2016 policy revision removed “Probable” from game status. The league said approximately 95 percent of players previously listed probable had played, and directed clubs to use questionable when there was a genuine question about availability. That historical figure is about the former probable label, not a measure of how often questionable players play today. NFL policy revision.
Inactive: the game-day roster outcome
Inactive is different from a practice or game-status label: it means the player is not included among the players active for that game. A player can practice fully or be listed questionable and still end up inactive; the game-day inactive announcement gives the roster outcome.

For the 2026 season, the NFL roster FAQ says a club may have 48 active players if it has at least eight offensive linemen; otherwise the active game-day limit is 47. The broader regular-season and playoff active/inactive list is 53 players, with standard practice-squad elevations potentially expanding it to 54 or 55. NFL roster FAQ.
An NFL Operations policy dated 2017 described inactive lists being submitted at a meeting 90 minutes before kickoff. Because that timing comes from a dated policy and is not confirmed here as the current rule, do not rely on it as a present-day deadline. NFL Operations policy archive.
How to read an NFL injury report without mixing the labels
- Check the report date and game. A player’s status can change between practice reports and kickoff.
- Read the practice field. Did not participate, limited and full tell you about that session’s workload.
- Read the game-status field separately. Questionable, doubtful and out address anticipated availability, not practice volume. The NFL publishes these as distinct fields on its current injury report.
- Use the inactive announcement for the final roster result. A practice label alone does not settle active or inactive status.
The NFL’s 2026-27 important-dates schedule says clubs file practice reports by 4:00 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice, on the applicable report days. For Sunday games, the listed reports are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; for games on other days, the schedule shifts. Check the official report for the specific week. NFL important dates.

Clubs may list a player for rest, illness or a personal matter as well as an injury. The NFL policy distinguishes non-injury rest from injury status, and current report entries may include non-injury notes. Read the reason alongside the participation label rather than assuming every entry means an injury.
