What New Cycling Tech Can Do—and What Riders Should Look For

GPS computers, power meters and integrated e-bike shifting offer useful capabilities when they match a rider’s goals and equipment. Professional race tracking and competition rules operate in a different context.

Cycling technology is adding practical tools for navigation, training and e-bike shifting, while professional races are using GPS tracking to help staff spot unusual events. The useful question is not which gadget is newest, but whether it fits your riding, your bike and the data or support you actually need.

What’s changing in cycling technology?

The changes span three different settings: consumer devices riders put on their bikes or bodies, systems integrated into e-bikes, and infrastructure used by race organizers. They do not offer the same benefits or operate under the same conditions.

  • For everyday and training rides: GPS cycling computers combine route guidance with training and ride-management features.
  • For performance training: pedal-based power meters record power and cadence, with some models adding more detailed cycling-dynamics data.
  • For compatible e-bikes: electronic shifting can work with the drive system to select gears automatically or shift while coasting.
  • For professional events: organizer-run GPS tracking can help race staff monitor rider positions and speeds.

These examples show capabilities described by Garmin, Shimano and the UCI; they are not an independently tested or ranked survey of the market.

What can a modern GPS cycling computer do?

Garmin’s September 2025 announcement for its Edge 550 and Edge 850 describes computers that go beyond showing speed. Their listed functions include navigation, training plans, in-ride fueling prompts, weather overlays and group-ride features. The announcement also describes compatibility with Garmin Varia radar and camera products. Some functions depend on compatible sensors, a smartphone, the Garmin Connect app or compatible apps, so check the requirements for the specific feature before buying. For battery life, Garmin Singapore states up to 36 hours in battery-saver mode and up to 12 hours in demanding use cases. These are manufacturer-stated figures, not independent test results; actual runtime depends on settings and use. Garmin’s announcement gives the figures and feature details.

What to check before choosing one

  • Navigation: Make sure the mapping and route guidance suit the kinds of rides you do, including whether you need a connected phone or app.
  • Screen readability: Consider whether the display is easy to read in the conditions and position in which you ride.
  • Training functions: Check whether the plans or prompts rely on sensors or other devices you do not already own.
  • Safety-related features: Confirm which compatible devices and connection methods are required. A computer’s compatibility with radar or a camera does not, by itself, establish a safety outcome.
  • Battery claims: Compare the stated mode with your expected ride length; a maximum in battery-saver mode is not the same as runtime under demanding use.

When is a pedal-based power meter useful?

A power meter is for riders who want performance data, particularly for structured training. Garmin describes its Rally 110 and Rally 210 as pedal-based power meters that record power and cadence. The dual-sensing Rally 210 adds cycling-dynamics data. Garmin states up to 90 hours of ride time for the Rally 110/210; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test. Garmin’s announcement.

Before choosing a model, ask whether you will use power and cadence data to guide training, and whether the specific meter is compatible with your bike and setup. The added dynamics data is relevant only if you have a reason to use it; it is not a general upgrade every rider needs.

How are e-bike systems integrating with electronic shifting?

Shimano says its EP6 drive unit works with CUES Di2 and DEORE XT Di2 with LINKGLIDE to enable Free Shift and Auto Shift. In Shimano’s description, Free Shift lets the rider shift while coasting, while Auto Shift tracks cadence, torque and speed to select a gear. Shimano specifies 85 Nm of torque for EP6; this is a manufacturer specification, and model and market details should be checked for the particular bike. Shimano EP6 product information.

This is a system-specific feature, not a universal e-bike capability. If considering an e-bike or drivetrain change, verify that the drive unit, electronic shifting components and bicycle configuration are explicitly compatible. A feature name alone does not establish that it will work with a different motor or component combination.

What does GPS safety tracking at a professional race mean?

For the 2025 Road World Championships, the UCI described saddle-mounted GPS devices and a control centre monitoring rider positions and speeds. The system was intended to help flag unusual situations, such as a sudden stop. UCI President David Lappartient called the introduction of GPS safety tracking “important and necessary progress.” This describes an event-operated deployment; it is not evidence that consumer riders receive the same monitoring or that tracking guarantees a rescue or safety outcome. Why should racers keep an eye on equipment rules?

Technology choices in competition are constrained by rules that can change by discipline and effective date. In a 20 June 2025 notice, the UCI said road rims would have a maximum height of 65 mm from 1 January 2026. That is a competition equipment rule, not a performance statistic or a general restriction on recreational bikes. Check the current regulations for the relevant discipline, event and date before choosing or using race equipment. The UCI says it reviews regulations in light of technical advances while placing safety and fairness at the heart of rules across cycling disciplines. UCI notice on equipment and safety rules.

  1. Define the goal. Choose navigation for route guidance, a power meter for training data, or compatible e-bike shifting for automated or coasting gear changes. Do not treat an event’s tracking system as a consumer service.
  2. Check system fit. Confirm sensor, phone, app, drive-unit and component compatibility for the exact feature you intend to use.
  3. Compare the relevant trade-offs. For a computer, look at display readability and battery use; for a power meter, consider whether the data supports your training; for an e-bike, verify the full drivetrain and motor combination.
  4. For racing, verify the rules. Check current UCI regulations and the requirements of the specific event and discipline rather than relying on an older summary.

Manufacturer feature lists establish what a company says its products support, not how they perform against alternatives in independent testing. The available examples also do not establish market-wide adoption or prove that cycling as a whole is becoming high-tech at a measurable rate.
