A TV’s native resolution is the fixed grid of pixels in its screen panel. To find it, look up the television’s exact model number in the manufacturer’s specifications or manual and check the panel or display resolution. A TV’s on-screen information about an HDMI input usually describes the signal it is receiving, not the panel’s native resolution.
What native resolution means
Resolution is the number of pixels arranged across and down a display. A TV’s native resolution is the physical pixel grid its panel uses to form an image, so the panel has one native resolution. For example, a 4K panel has 3840 pixels across and 2160 down.

That is different from a supported resolution: a format the TV can accept from a connected device. The TV can scale an incoming picture to fit its panel. A 4K television can therefore display a 1080p signal, but the signal does not become native 4K simply because it fills the screen.

- Find the full model number. Check the label on the back of the TV, its settings or About screen, or the original paperwork. Keep all letters and suffixes: models in the same family can differ by size or region.
- Open the manufacturer’s page for that exact model. Find its official product specifications, support page, or owner’s manual.
- Look for the panel or display resolution. The specification may use wording such as “panel resolution” or “display resolution.” Read that figure as the native pixel dimensions. RTINGS’ TV resolution guide lists common dimensions and formats.
- Translate the dimensions if the listing uses a format name. Full HD (FHD) is typically 1920 × 1080; 4K UHD is 3840 × 2160; and 8K is 7680 × 4320. When precision matters, use the dimensions rather than relying on a marketing label.
There is no universal TV menu path for this lookup; menu labels and locations vary by model and software version. The exact model’s manual is the best guide to its settings.

How to check the signal from a connected device
If you want to know what a console, computer, cable box, or streaming device is sending right now, select its input and open the TV’s signal or information display. The banner may report the incoming resolution and other signal details. Treat those as information about the current input—not proof of the panel’s native resolution. RTINGS explains the distinction in its guide to supported TV resolutions.
A PC can be set to output a particular format, then the TV’s information display can be used to confirm what it receives. This checks the signal path, not the panel specification.
Why the numbers can differ
There can be several resolutions in the path from a game or video to your eyes:

- Render or content resolution: the detail produced by a game or included in a video.
- Output or signal resolution: the format sent by the connected device over HDMI or another connection.
- Native panel resolution: the TV’s fixed pixel grid.
These figures need not match. A game may render below 4K while its device outputs a 4K signal after scaling; a TV may also scale a lower-resolution input to fill a higher-resolution panel. An app’s “4K” label or an HDMI information banner alone does not establish that the TV has a native 4K panel.

A higher-resolution panel can show more detail when the source contains it, but resolution by itself does not guarantee that a difference will be visible from every seat. Screen size and viewing distance matter. A TV can upscale lower-resolution material to fit its panel, but scaling cannot add detail that was absent from the source. RTINGS discusses viewing distance and screen size in its resolution guide.
Keep refresh rate separate from resolution, too. A specification such as 4K at 60 Hz or 120 Hz combines a resolution with a refresh rate and supported input capability; it does not change the panel’s native pixel dimensions.
