A modern co-browsing tool lets a support agent and a customer work through the same webpage or browser-based workflow in real time. Its chief benefit is shared visual context: instead of relying only on a customer’s description, an agent can point out a page element, guide a step, or help resolve a problem in the workflow itself. The exact visibility, controls, and privacy protections depend on the product and its configuration.
What co-browsing shares—and how it differs from screen sharing
Co-browsing is a form of live collaboration around a webpage or browser context. Depending on the implementation, the agent may see an active tab or web application and may be able to highlight elements, annotate the page, or use other controls. Genesys and Zoho Assist describe examples of these capabilities, but their product pages do not establish one universal technical definition for every tool. Screen sharing commonly presents a broader view of a device’s screen, while co-browsing may restrict the shared view to a browser tab, page, or application and offer controls such as field masking. Neither distinction is absolute: check the specific product’s sharing boundary and settings rather than assuming co-browsing is automatically private or that every screen-sharing session exposes the same information. Zoho Assist’s explanation of collaborative customer support.

Troubleshooting a confusing page
A shared view can help an agent identify the point where a customer is stuck and direct attention to a specific control or message. Highlighting and annotation can make instructions more concrete than a verbal description alone. This is a plausible workflow benefit, not proof that co-browsing reduces resolution time in every support operation. Genesys capability overview; Zoho Assist feature overview.

Guiding onboarding and product use
When a user is learning a web product, an agent can guide them through the relevant page or workflow step by step. Vendor materials identify onboarding and product-adoption support as use cases. Whether a particular tool supports the customer’s application and the agent’s support process needs to be checked directly. Zoho Assist collaborative-support use cases; Microsoft AppSource listing for Cobrowse for Customer Service.
Helping with forms and checkout flows
An agent can point to the field, instruction, or stage that needs attention while a customer completes a form, application, or checkout. That may be clearer than describing the page over chat or phone. It should not be confused with evidence of a conversion lift: the cited product descriptions establish intended uses, not measured sales outcomes. Adding visual help inside a support workflow
Some products connect co-browsing to a contact-center, messaging, or CRM workflow. Genesys describes co-browsing within its web messaging offering, and Microsoft AppSource lists a co-browsing integration for Dynamics 365. The depth of integration, setup work, and supported workflow can differ, so confirm what is included for the product and deployment under consideration. Genesys capability page; Microsoft AppSource listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrivacy and customer control are core requirements
A browser-based view can still expose sensitive information. Treat masking, consent, agent permissions, and session records as evaluation requirements—not automatic benefits of the co-browsing label. Vendor pages describe controls such as masking, permissions, encryption, and session logs, but those statements do not establish that a particular customer deployment meets its legal, contractual, or internal security obligations. - Agent permissions: Distinguish view-only access from highlighting, annotation, data entry, or remote control. Confirm which actions require customer approval.
- Records and access: Determine whether sessions are logged or recorded, who can access the records, and how long they are retained.
- Coverage and accessibility: Verify supported browsers, mobile environments, applications, and assistive-technology needs.
- Governance: Review available hosting and deployment options, security documentation, and the vendor’s terms against your organization’s requirements.
A vendor’s reference to GDPR, HIPAA, PCI, SOC 2, or ISO is not blanket proof that every configuration or use of its product complies with the rules that apply to a particular organization. Have the relevant security, privacy, and compliance teams assess the actual deployment.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
Product descriptions support the view that co-browsing can provide visual guidance, annotations, permissions, and workflow integrations. The available sources do not establish an independent, comparable effect on resolution time, customer satisfaction, or conversion. Genesys’s page attributes a 49% consumer preference figure for first-contact resolution to “The State of Customer Experience” in 2025; that is a customer-preference statistic, not a measurement of co-browsing’s effect on first-contact resolution.
