Mission Control gives you an overview of open windows, Spaces put windows on separate desktops, and Stage Manager keeps a current app or group of apps prominent while leaving recently used apps within reach. Each is built into macOS, and they can be used separately or together.
What each Mac window-management feature does
Mission Control: see and find open windows
Mission Control spreads the windows on the current desktop into a single overview so you can select the one you need. A bar across the top can show your desktop Spaces, full-screen apps, and Split View arrangements. Apple describes it as a way to see desktop windows “arranged in a single layer” so the one you need is easier to spot (Apple Support: View open windows and spaces in Mission Control on Mac).

Press Control–Up Arrow or the Mission Control key to open the overview. To see windows for just the active app, press Control–Down Arrow for App Exposé. You can also use trackpad or Magic Mouse gestures; shortcuts and gestures can be changed in Keyboard, Trackpad, or Mouse settings. With more than one display, Mission Control shows the windows and Spaces associated with each display.
Spaces: separate desktops for different tasks
A Space is an additional desktop. Its windows stay separate from those on other Spaces, letting you keep different kinds of work in different desktop environments. Apple’s Mac guide documents up to 16 Spaces (Apple Support: Work in multiple spaces on Mac).

You can assign an app to all desktops, the current desktop, a desktop on a particular display, or no fixed desktop. A Mission Control setting can also make macOS switch to the Space where an app already has open windows.

Stage Manager: keep a working set in view
Stage Manager places the app or windows you are working with in the center and arranges recently used apps along the left edge. Click an app there to bring it forward, resize or overlap windows, or drag apps together to make a group. Selecting a group brings its apps forward together. Apple describes the feature as keeping the working app “front and center” (Apple Support: Organize your Mac desktop with Stage Manager).

Which feature should you use?
| What you want to do | Use | How it arranges work |
|---|---|---|
| Find a window that is already open | Mission Control | Shows windows in an overview, with Spaces and full-screen or Split View arrangements in the bar. |
| Keep different projects or types of work apart | Spaces | Gives each set of windows its own desktop. |
| Focus on one app or a small group, but keep recent apps close | Stage Manager | Keeps current work centered and recent apps or groups accessible at the side. |
These features solve different parts of window management rather than competing for one universal “best” choice. Mission Control is an overview, Spaces divide work across desktops, and Stage Manager organizes the active working set. For example, you can use Spaces to separate projects and Mission Control to find a window within a Space; Stage Manager can help keep the apps for the current task together.
